Sports Buzz: More national criticism, questions about Philbin

Sorry, but this is just silly. Do you comprehend the responsibilities of the head coach and what delegation is? There are millions of parents who have no clue what their kids do. A head coach does not hang out in the locker room like players and trainers do. The players are going to be able to hide stuff from the coach. It was reported that Warren Sapp did the same thing in Tampa and Dungy had no clue......what a piece of crap and horrible coach he is right?

Doesn't fit the present narrative.

Of course Sapp did that same thing. He's a nasty person and football player, and I'm not mad at him for it.
But lets not pretend that the Dolphins are somehow more guilty.

Thanks tl77 - I must have the wrong game. I thought that it was a night game that we lost that triggered the trading for McKinnie - I must be wrong.
The season seems like a blur.

agreed! haha but ya, I'm pretty sure the trade was after the first Bills game. And speculation was he was brought in because of Clabo's struggles, not Martin. Funny enough Clabo turned his season around shortly after this.

Peter King not knowing how Philbin couldn't have been privy to what was going on doesn't mean Philbin was being a **** coach. King is admitting he has no idea how a coach is coaching his team. Awesome limb to go out on there Peter.

As for Schlereth, again his view is his opinion. Is he comparing his experience from back with him being in Denver? Why does it have to be the same experience in the locker room for every NFL team?

Explain how one gets command of the locker room for me

Well, for exact details you should probably ask an expert. That would be Don Shula, and certainly not Joe Philbin. Sent Don an email, maybe he'll reply.

IF Joe did in fact tell players to respect each other and they did not…well, it shows you how much they listen to their coach's words.

Joe needs more players that respect him or happen to be self-starters.

"They were either complicit, incompetent or both.”

I said this the other day...and i don't know which one is worse in this case...I really feel that if philbin knew as little as people here say he did he is incompetent to the highest order and has no business being a head coach in the NFL...

so which is it, are they covering up for him or is he that incompetent...

Don't care about the perception of Joe, or his pulse on the team....I only care about wins, he is in year 3...I would say his last chance with the phins. The make the play-offs...all is well, they miss....then they can hit reset and the team is where we are now.

The idea that the HC is supposed to police players' personal lives is ridiculous. Even Harbaugh had no idea of Martin's predicament, and his bout with depression goes back to his college days under Harbaugh. I think its fair to say that the people who think Philbin should be held accountable are the same people who didn't like Philbin before this scandal erupted. That's all I got for this joke of a thread.

I don't think it is as simple as that. You ignore the fact that it is entirely possible and likely true that there were Joe was not made aware of this even though he could actually be very in tune to what was going on with the team. Consider this...

* Martin did not tell anyone he was having issues
* Martin went along with the behavior and pulled some of the same stunts on other people
* The other O-linemen were doing the same thing
* The o-line coach was acting in the same way

So....what were they supposed to report? They were all doing the same thing and they all thought (except Martin apparently) they weren't doing anything wrong? By outward appearances, this is a loose, fun loving group.

Wasn't it obvious from the reactions that nobody knew this was an issue until Martin finally imploded?

I get not being happy with Philbin because of coaching.........but lets be realistic here, the other players on the Dolphins had no idea this was an issue either.

Who is Philbin again? Is he the guy that just throws the red flags during the games and always looks stunned and befuddled on the sideline?

How did your beloved Mangini handle the fact that his QB Bret Favre was sexually harassing a reporter in the locker room and via text messaging? How did Harbaugh not know about Martin's documented depression while at Stanford? Coaches aren't big brother.

The other big question in this is what did Mike Sherman know? Yes, Sherman is gone. However, he is the missing link between Turner and Philbin. Sherman was close to both. He even brought Turner with him (and Zac Taylor and Ryan Tannehill) on the train from College Station.
I don't know if Sherman was interviewed by Ted Wells or if he skipped the country and has joined a mariachi band somewhere in Mexico, but if people are questioning what Philbin knew and didn't know, the key is getting to Sherman.

My dad was a cop...it took him all of 5 seconds to look in my bother's car window 1 time see seeds on the floor and pull his tag...he is a details man...he is anal...

I watched hard knocks...I saw a man who was detail oriented to the point of being ANAL and obsessive...that man knows every single thing that goes on in his locker room because that is the type of person he is...did you see him picking up paper off the locker room floor? he sees everything and to think that he didn't see this is putting your head in the sand...

he was given a wash in the report because the report is complete and utter garbage...it was designed to paint martin as the victim, incog as the evil man with the mustache tying martin to the rail road tracks, and jerry and and pouncy as his two side kicks that did less than incog because he was the evil mastermind...then way out in left field, philbin was not aware...

complete garbage...just say philbin was complacent in it and he got away with it and stop acting like the man is a saint...because not knowing is worse for his image than knowing and doing nothing...

Honeyb - It's not an original line, it comes from a Woody Allen movie, Zelig about a human chameleon, who disappears for a period and everyone is concerned and then they show Woody performing in the mariachi band. Ironically, when Zelig meets with a group of psychiatrists, he behaves like a psychiatrist. J-Mart is our Zelig. He blew up to 312 lbs and he behaved like an O-lineman when he was in their company. He only escaped his human chameleon character when he found love (ironically Mia Farrow).
Thank you for recognizing a feeble attempt at humor in this very sad episode.
