Sports Buzz - Two Dolphin tidbits 8-7

It wasn't not only Ellerbe but the entire defense that dropped INT's last season. As a unit I bet they left a dozen or more on the field because of drops. Hopefully Ellerbe will inspire the rest of the unit to work on their hands.

i hope tannehill is just saving the sliding for when the red shirt comes off
I hope so too. But sliding often comes from instinct and awareness and taking a second to think it over usually ends badly.

I'm not a fan of the read option. It unnecessarily exposes toe QB to big hits both legal ones and illegal ones. Wilson does a great job at it, but most running QB'S are burning their future for a little better performance today.

I don't want to waste the best Tannehill years (when he is a veteran) just for a few plays early 8n his career.
I think we will see teams looking at QB's are more expendable than in the past. Not that anyone wants to expose their QB, but in the past, they have been handled with kid gloves because they are a huge investment. The new rookie pay scale won't cripple a team's cap if a QB is a bust, but that also means teams don't have to be so worried about QB's getting busted. The value of wins today may for the first time in many decades mean more than your QB's health. The 49ers for example may very well know that Kaepernick may make it through 9 or 10 years as opposed to 15, but if he wasn't running, would anybody want him for 15? A lot of teams would probably take the shorter career at a higher level of play.

Tannehill should watch a lot of Colin Kaepernick. I didn't say that to piss you off, but I will let it linger for a while before I get to the point. Kaepernick is great at protecting himself for such a big target. He does that about as well as anyone I've seen his size. He's great at finding the sideline and timing his slides. Tannehill isn't as fast as Kaepernick, but he's fast enough to apply a lot of the same principles. I think incorporating more read/option is a great idea for Tannehill - especially the read/option with the pass as another option. It'd get Tannehill out of the pocket without tipping your hand early in the down - the way roll outs do. Tannehill just has to be smart about protecting himself. Tannehill would greatly benefit from a running game, and if he has to be part of the solution, it's not ideal, but it may be needed. I think Tannehill is much too slow to use his legs. During Aaron Rodgers' brilliant run from 2009-2012, where he was as efficient as any QB in NFL history, he put up more rushing yards each season than Tannehill has put up in either of his two seasons. I'm glad that Miami is going to finally get some value out of his athleticism.

I have no idea how anybody can believe the Dolphins had the short end of the interception stick in 2013. It was glaring all season that we were granted one reprieve after another when defenders dropped simple picks off Tannehill, while our cornerbacks made fantastic unlikely picks, just the opposite of prior years when Sean Smith and Co. couldn't handle even the most simple of gifts.

I mentioned late last season that for all the adjustments we were making toward the high end it was very unlikely that our interception fortunes would remain so good in 2014. Pro Football Outsiders finally came out with their adjusted interceptions for 2013. Not surprisingly, if you actually paid balanced attention, Tannehill was the beneficiary of more dropped interceptions than any other quarterback, with 11. His interception rate also took the biggest jump when amended:
