Steelers Pick - The Gift That Keeps On Giving

I hated to see Fitzpatrick go, but hopefully the trade will result in a top 15 pick.

Would like to see the Dolphins focus on those core positions like quarterback, pass rusher, corner and blindside protector. Right tackle if Tua is picked.

I keep seeing people say things like “get by” and “just fine”. Are we as a fanbase ok with “just fine”? Aren’t we tired of being the definition of 8-8? That’s what just fine gets you. It’s time to start investing in the positions that make the great offenses so good.

Incidentally, those offenses don’t have the All-Pro offensive lineman. If anything, that’s the position where you can get by with “just fine”, if your coaching staff is competent enough to coach them up. I guess that would be a concern for Miami since we rarely seem to be able to coach up an OL.

I couldn't agree more.

That seems to be the Patriots way and, through association, what I suspect the Dolphins way will be too.

Okay, lets look at what the Pats do for OL. First, they don't pick anyone high because they never have high draft picks (especially WR's). So keep that in mind.

Of players currently on the roster and/or IR that were picked by the Pats;

1) Marcus Cannon, drafted 5th round in 2011. Didn't become a "starter" until 2016. Was considered a possible first rounder but had non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Call it a high risk high reward pick. Not the sort of thing the Dolphins can afford to wait on when rebuilding with a rookie QB.

2) Shaq Mason, drafted 4th round in 2015. Immediate starter. Solid pick. Something the Dolphins could hope to do but the odds aren't in their favor.

3) Joe Thuney, drafted 3rd round in 2016. Immediate starter. Solid pick. Something the Dolphins could hope to do but the odds aren't in their favor.

4) David Andrews, UDFA in 2015. Got his chance when Stork went to IR. Beat out Stork the following year. Lucky pickup and not something the Dolphins could count on replicating.

5) Isiah Wynn, drafted 3rd round in 2018. Did start but missed all of 2018. Started two games in 2019 and is back on IR again. Not looking too good.

So out of all of the OL guys on their roster, you have two solid draft picks, one UDFA that worked out, a potential bust, and one pick that took several years to develop.

The Dolphins don't have the luxury of time. Neither James nor Tunsil were elite and both were picked in the first round. We desperately need a pair of tackles at least as good as they were. Davis should be nothing more than depth on a quality OL. You could hope to pick up OG's in the 3rd and 4th round but how has that worked out for us lately?

Time to pay for what we need. Either in the draft or FA market. We have the draft picks and money. Just got it done and include some depth.

BTW, go watch Tau film and you will see he needs a good LT more than a good RT despite throwing with the left hand (he isn't left handed).

Sign me up. Is Ruggs a 1st rounder though ya think??
No doubt, just not sure where in the 1st. Probably on the back end, he is going to absolutely obliterate the combine. But he’s so good at what he does, it’s hard to see him tested by other things so that is my slight worry with him

Pretty sure Wynn was a first round pick.

you really cannot compare or build a team based on what the Patriots do. They have something that no other team has or has had in the NFL. The combo of Tom Brady and BB. players will come to NE just to get their chrome trophy.

Guys I would like to see us get no real order
Tua
Jeudy or Ruggs top WR
Simmons lb/s Clemson
J taylor RB wisconsin or Harris alabama
Oline
CB
DE/DT

Without an "order", and some sort of priorty assigned to positions, it's really just an unrealistic wish list, rather than a plan, isn't it?

Good break down! The best combination, imo, is soild guys in the FA period(which we'll likely have to over pay for) to join solid draft picks.
I'm assuming that's the plan. You can't rely on the draft(which remember is after the FA now) to then try and address your OL problems.

Unless, there's some crazy OL talent available they shouldn't consider OL guys until the end of the 1st round forward. Ideally, those 1st round picks should be used on difference makers.
