One take, sometimes the football bounces funny. That Aiyuk catch, off the bounce, turned into the biggest play of the game in the NFC Championship. And it easily could have been intercepted as well. Had it been, Detroit most likely advances to the super bowl.
Campbell happens to rhythm with gamble and that didn't pay off today. But he got them to 12-5 with the same approach. With a young team, I think you have to sometimes take the points and be a little more conservative. A 27-10 lead midway through the 3rd might have calmed the nerves of younger players.
Kansas City still looks to be on a different level. When their backs were against the wall this season, they played their best football.
That said, I think San Francisco has more talent than Kansas City, but do you bet against Mahomes?
As to Miami, I think with the right moves and a little luck, the Dolphins could still be on the rise. The number of injuries this team endured is hard to overcome.
Excellent post.
I like a coach willing to be aggressive, but is also able to understand the context as well.
Up by 14 in the 3rd quarter when a FG makes it a 3 score game and can result in a momentum swing if not converted is a no-brainier to kick the FG in that context.
Same goes for kicking the FG to tie the game in the 4th when down by 3 considering los and yards needed because the momentum goes to the other team and if they score a TD the game is essentially over if the opposing team doesn’t beat itself.
I agree SF has more talent, but Mahomes may be the greatest QB all-time and thrives in the playoffs.
KC is 14-3 when he starts and his numbers…
Mahomes Passing Playoffs:
422 comp, 626 att, 67.41%, 4,802 yards, 7.67 YA, 39 TDs, 7 int, 106.3 QB rating
Mahomes Rushing Playoffs:
81 att, 458 yards, 5.65 YA, 5 TD, 1 lost fumble.
A 4 to 1 TD/TO (42-8) going up against the best competition is ridiculous.
His only bad game, arguably, was against the Buccaneers in the Super Bowl. His OL got eaten up by the Bucs D. Next Generation Stats recorded Mahomes running for “497 Yards” running behind the los before throwing a pass or getting sacked that game. By far the most ever recorded.
There were also 2 dropped TD passes that game, at least one was by Tyreek.
