**Super Thread** Clowney/Tunsil Trade Rumor (merged too many times)

Ok. So can someone tell him this. IF, and we all know this is a huge if, Miami does complete this trade. Does that mean it will be on Miami to offer Clowney a large contract? I mean that is why Clowney hasn't signed his tender right? Because he wants a larger contract? If he comes here and doesn't get the money he wants then that puts Miami in the same boat as Houston and without a good LT right? OR do I have this all wrong?

Can't sign long term deal until next off season. We can franchise him again and then trade him if he won't sign with us. Trade him to where he wants to go and that team will sign him long term. the thought being that with the ability to sign him long term he will have more trade value. Right now his value is limited due to it being past the deadline.

So would it be possible to turn around and trade him again this year for another high round pick? Or would that need to wait until next year too?

I wouldn't want LT traded either, but Clowney and 2 x 1st round picks would be awfully tempting. If Clowney get 12 to 13 games a year, that would be a bonus, but he is injury plagued.

But I would listen....

Given Clowney's contract situation, I'd barely count him as part of the deal. So, forgetting Clowney, what type of compensation would you need for Tunsil? Consider that Houston is likely drafting in the 20s - especially with Tunsil on the team. I'd want at least 2 1st's.

I agree! One other wrinkle is if Miami doesn't think they will be able to re-sign Tunsil or doesn't want to pay the price.

No sense trading him now while his value sucks. That's why all the experts are saying that Houston totally botched this. The time to trade him is when the receiving team can lock him up long term like the Bears did with Mack.

Tunsil and Stills for Clowney and 1st round picks in 2020 and 2021 would make me in.

The texan fans seem to believe the deal will be Clowney picks 1 and 2 2020 and 3 in 2021 for tunsil. And they believe we will dump Clowney for another 2 in 2020.

I feel I must be in the minority, in that I don’t value OL to be that high. Do you need decent players on the line? Of course. I don’t want Dallas Thomas or Billy Turner out there. But the Patriots just won the super bowl with an OL full of 4th and 5th rounders.

A 3x pro bowl pass rusher, a 1st round pick, and another high pick, is far more valuable than a LT

The second sentence of my post literally states this "optimal strategy" isnt realistically achieveable... Instead its a guideline to the most logical way to build a winning roster.... Teams get 2 types of assets, chash and draft picks.

Sure you can buy talent with cash, but the more important the position, the more expensive it gets. Draft picks dont work that way. A 1st round pick is a 1st round pick no matter what position you draft, and the contract is also cemented no matter who you draft.

With that in mind, wouldnt it make sense to use draft picks for the higher valued positions and get high quality supporting cast players through FA contracts. I'm not advocating signing no player at all, but when you have the option to either trade for high value position guy who's going to break the bank in 1 year or take your shot in the draft instead, the logical anwser is obvious.

If there is ever left over cash, you can then extend guys who YOU KNOW perform well on your team because they have done so for 4-5 years already, there's no guessing or system projecting... This limits FA mistake, which are quite common, you cant say the draft is a crap shot(You didnt say that, but its used quite often as an argument) and turn around ignoring the fact that high priced FAs also bust frequently, they're just as risky, only with a bigger price tag.

Like I said, in an ideal world, you'd like to always have your LT, QB, pass rushers and #1CB on rookie contracts... Its a pipe dream, I know, but the other extreme alternative of having all those guys on their 2nd contract is impossible and would make for a seriously top heavy team with no supporting cast. Both these scenarios are extreme and far fetched, but they show you where to lean for a sound strategy.
"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."

Yeah, those positions are expensive, but I'd rather have my money in those 4 positions knowing I already have elite players at those positions. That's a problem I'd love to have where I'm worrying about maybe going with cheaper options for depth, rookies, undrafted guys etc, rather than more proven veterans because I can't afford them knowing my QB, LT, DE, and CB are taking a chunk of my space. That's a better alternative than wondering whether my franchise QB is going to get killed, or my offense is being wasted because I have no pass rush.

I'd deal with it, because how many teams out there have outstanding players at those 4 positions? Can you even think of one? How many teams would want to? All of them.

I think we can get more than a 2nd next year. If that report is true, that's a nice haul. May explain why Rosen isn't playing. Let Fitz get killed with our OL. Is it possible that a target for us at the top of next year's draft is a left tackle and not Tua?

Clowney and a 1st would be a reasonable deal for Tunsil. Tunsil is a very good player, but the deal would accelerate the rebuild with additional resources.
