I've never gotten a great feeling from Philbin, nor Flynn honestly.

He looks likes a winner when placed up against McCoy as an option though.

I got to tell you that I'm a bit shocked that Zimmer is not on the list...actually very shocked.

It would seem obvious that Ireland wants to stay with the 3-4 defense which is what he knows. I said before he was brought up by Parcells and learned how to scout for the 3-4 defense and I wasn't sure he could switch gears to drafting the 4-3, apparently he won't have to.

I guess I would go with Philbin but my concern would be more with him and Ireland being on the same page as far as the type of players they need to acquire. It seems as if Philbin would be looking more for WCO run after the catch skillplayers, while Ireland is stuck on the Parcells criteria for his player evaluations. To run that GB offense you must have multiple skill position players who create major mismatch issues for the defense and a QB who is accurate and decisive.

I fear that Philbin is a passenger on a Super Bowl team... But hey! what the hell do I know really... I'm ready to support whoever they choose... And its one thing to say your ready to coach again, but I have a hard time beleiving you can put your mind 100% on football when you just lost your son...
1)Mccoy
2)Bowles
3)Philbin

At least Philbin would come from a successful franchise that knows what winning feels like and how to promote it, unlike McCoy and Bowles.

It's like picking between a Mazda, Mitsubishi and Subaru when you there are both a Lexus and Infiniti showroom close by and more than enough in your checkbook to purchase either. :idk:

really? who is your lexus guy?

I love when people bash (not neccessarily talking about you) these guys and have no answer themselves. Its just rich. Everyone has all the answers and yet none.

I have liked Philbin since he was interviewed. Stayed silent since his kid died, but he is forging on and wants the job.

I like Philbin in this situation because:

1) He works collaboratively and is about setting up the offense to dictate to the defense and he adjusts at halftime as to what the defense is doing.
2) He has a front office already doing some heavy lifting for him and he may already have his DC in place in Bowles (speculative but seemingly likely).
3) Possibility of bringing in Clements as OC would be nice and working with a guy like Flynn who they already know would be a very nice thing to have.
4) If he turns our offense into what GB does, you can forget it, we will beat the Pats and anyone else 3/4 of the time is our D stays as they were these last 8 games.

This is really tough to judge as a fan. It's not like we can look at their stats, or game tape etc. All i know is the rumors I hear and the results i see on the field. The only one i know that I DON'T want is McCoy. Why is that? When i watched Denver against the Steelers they ran the same option play to the right between the guard and tackle over and over and over and over and over. They were lucky and for some reason Pittsburgh couldn't stop it. Then what did they do? They did the same exact game plan against New England. Now what coordinator in his right mind would think that they could run the same game plan against the Patriots that had two weeks to study the Denver offensive schemes? The Patriots easily shut them down becasue Denver's coaching staff failed to put together an offensive game plan that was different or had some wrinkles that would throw the Patriots off their game plan. Plain and simple they got schooled by old Bill. I don't want a coach that gets schooled by Bill, i want the coach that can put together a game plan to beat Bill and the Patriots. From what i understand, Bowles helped turn around the Miami defense in the second half of the season. I have no idea or not whether that is true or not, but i trust that Ross and Ireland know if it is true or not, and there must be some truth to that in order for Bowles to get a second interview. Thus, i voted for Bowles, but i wouldn't be disappointed with Philbin based on what his offenses were doing in Green Bay. Past success is the best indicator of future success.

GO PHINS~!

Well the only bright side to all of this is that the coach should be in place before the senior bowl.

No matter who they pick of the three someone won't be completely happy. Whoever it is I'll do my best to stand behind them.

This team has no idea what they are doing. Interviewing several coaches, narrowing that list, second interviews!!! I'm sure no other team does it like this. It's clear there are many fans on this site that can help Ross and Ireland decide, but they just won't listen.

This is how other teams do it.

It seems to me like the Dolphins really want to hire Joe Philbin but are being careful because of the whole monkey wrench of the guy's son dying. I mean, if I'm reading tea leaves, that's what I'm reading.

They want an offensive guy, but I think they want to keep Todd Bowles so that they have continuity on defense, and when Philbin's son went missing and turned up dead, they felt like they had to get another offensive guy in the fold in case Philbin either quits football in general, takes his name out of consideration, or just appears unhinged. That's where the 11th hour interest in McCoy comes in, IMO. Putting Bowles in the mix for 2nd interviews is a way of flattering him into staying on as AHC/DC under the offensive coach.

But if Armando's reporting is correct that Philbin is ready to rock and roll and take over the Dolphins job if offered...then the Dolphins' fears may be put at ease.

I think it's as simple as:

1. They want a super charged offense,
2. They like the Green Bay offense,
3. The Draft options at QB have dwindled right out from under them (especially Barkley),
4. Philbin brings in a built-in quarterback option that has recently been announced will be an UNRESTRICTED free agent,
5. Philbin may be able to rob the Green Bay staff of some quality coaches.

That's all there is to it, IMO. I think Joe Philbin is the next Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins. I never got a good feeling about him, but I also never said I was definitely right about that. Evaluating other teams' assistant coaches is one of the hardest things you can do as a fan. It's not like evaluating players. You can't just go to the tape.

There is something to be said for a COHESIVE plan that involves a Joe Philbin importing a Matt Flynn and perhaps even a Tom Clements, and if you're lucky enough you might get Todd Bowles to stay on as Defensive Coordinator. There's never any perfect plan, never one plan that was the only correct answer, but the most ideal plans IMO are cohesive ones.

Great post. Hope you are right. While all the coaches on that list are very under whelming, so aren't all the coaches available for this year, including Jeff Fisher. The Rams can have him.
