Tannehill or Bortles?

I'd take Bortles without hesitation. No adjusting required. He already managed at least 7.7 yards per attempt every season in college including a fantastic 9.4 last season.

Naturally the Tannehill defenders will attack based on level of competition, under the laughable notion that the Big 12 featured excellent defense. It was actually quite poor, particularly in Tannehill's final season of 2011 in which only Texas threatened to emphasize pass defense.

Besides, Bortles managed several unlikely clutch comebacks, notably at Penn State, at Temple and especially at Louisville, given the caliber of that opponent with several high pro draft picks on defense. He also thrashed Baylor in the bowl game as two touchdown underdog when it was obvious that a huge number of points would be required. Tannehill has invariably flattened out in similar situations, including college with big first halves and next to nothing in the second half.

Bortles has superior instincts and can throw on the run either left or right. He's one of the few quarterbacks who can match Tannehill moving left. There have been issues with wobbly passes but it seemed to be markedly improved in the one preseason game I watched.

Bottom line, with Bortles you get the first quarterback picked in that draft, while we settled for third with Tannehill. That's not always the pivotal factor but as I mentioned yesterday it's always a race to steal a few percent here and there, not give it away. I default to the percentages.

Who cares what Tannehill did in college??

Damn that's a 5 card dud if I ever saw one....

Yep...pretty much like being stuck with this as your final hand:

Actually, his coaching staff at UCF is full of guys that have been coaches at the NFL level.

And no talent around him? You'd be surprised how talented the receiver group at UCF is. Some future NFL players in that group. Not to mention, the running back UCF had is also now on the Jaguars with Bortles. Believe me, Bortles didn't do it alone.

Source: I covered the team during Bortles' last season there.

As an alumni of UCF, and having closely watched this coaching staff for years, I can tell you that they are former NFL coaches for a reason - because they aren't qualified to be NFL coaches. You are going to learn that very quickly because UCF will be lucky to go 500 this year without Bortles.

Interesting question OP

I am a huge Bortles fan as I have mentioned many times. I told everyone in VIP chat this time last year that Bortles would be a stud NFL qb and a top pick.
However, I like Tannehill's athleticism for Lazor's system.
All things equal taking scheme out of it if both were rookies this year I would take Bortles.
But, I am tired of waiting and I expect a big year out of Tannehill this year. I don't want to wait around to develop a qb, so I am happy with having Tannehill now.

Tannehill is a far better thrower, and I have doubts bottles can hit the comeback routes the way tannehill does. Tannehill is one of the best in the league at that, especially with Eli falling off, who was the master at that route.

But bortles makes plays, something tannehill hasn't done consistently yet, amd something he has to do to get in the elite level.

But he was also held back by Sherman who didn't allow him to do those things, philbin and Sherman even said they told him to stay strong in the pocket so he wouldn't get happy feet, (aka rg3) I expect a huge breakout season for tannehill year with this new offense and strong WR core.

Nothing personal to the poster.....but comments like this are what make some of the "debates" absurd. Bortles makes plays and Tannehill hasn't yet???? Botles has not played one single NFL snap (outside of useless preseason)...RT has for 2 years. Bortles has not made a single play in the NFL that matters. A handful of preseason snaps, yet RT has shown us a litany of plays that display an upside that is beyond encouraging.

First I can understand why some want Bortles as there is a lot to like about the kid and I believe he will have success in the NFL, but I will take Tannehill any day and twice on Sundays.

Tannehill has already shown to be one of the tougher QB's in the NFL...and has had some success after being severely handicapped his first two season with a poor surrounding cast and an OC who lacked any innovations and struggled to make play calls that set up potential game breakers. HE has a skill set I love...athletic, throws extremely well on the run, takes hits and shakes them off, excellent arm strength, acurate and has developed a good rapport with his receivers (with the exception of one).

I think the hypothetical was based on their college game ONLY. Which of course is silly, because we've had two years to see Tannehill in the pros. I know he can lead a fourth quarter comeback win against New England. I don't know if Blake Bortles is going to be able to do that.

I think the flip side is, if you look at Bortles in college he did have some accuracy problems. He was a guy who would throw that occasional worm burner. However, I've been extremely impressed by the way he's been working on that. I have read that he spent all of his free time between school and training camp working on that with Jordan Palmer and some other guys, and it looks to be paying dividends.

That said, i agree with Fin Thirteen. Teddy Bridgewater at one point was overhyped to the point of absurdity, but it was equally nuts that he fell to where he did. He's a QB who has proved that he can make all of the throws with anticipation and poise, and has a winning attitude. And you drop him 30 spots in the draft because he had a bad pro day? :sidelol:

It is a silly comparison are we going to compare our QB to every rookie now?

I can't believe there are people who still have their number of posts per page set to the default in this, the Year of Our Lord, 2014.

Bortles was known as a clutch QB. He would play pretty average through 3 quarters and then would magically turn it on in the 4th. I dont know if that's a good or bad thing, but he definitely has some fight in him wen the pressure is on. He lead UCF to some remarkable comebacks - one of which was an upset against Teddy Bridgewater.

And yes, its definitely unfair to compare the two QBs now based on only what we knew of their college careers.

Between the two I would have to say Teddy Bridgewater.

Damn you beat me to it. I'll say option C. Teddy Bridgewater.

He can make the throws (his deep ball has already gotten better), is as tough as nails, and has that same mental "it" factor that Tom Brady has. He does everything a francise QB should and can do, it's just that he's slight in frame. So was Tom Brady when he entered the league. Teddy will get bigger but besides that he can give Johnny Clipboard and RG3 lessons in how NOT to take unnecessary hits. I believe Teddy's ceiling is higher than Tannehills but not as high as Bortles. But I think Teddy is less of a risk since he doesn't flinch in the face of pressure (mental or physical) and when he is hit, he can take it.

Just finished watching Bortles vs Lions. I love T-hill, he is our man without question, but Jags fans have gotta be excited. Kid looked real good.

Bortles looked very impressive in his preseason games, and I'm about as critical as they get when talking about rookie QBs. His stats were ok but he made some great throws. He looked like a 5 year vet. Forget what you saw at UCF, he has decent players and coaches around him now.

That being said, I think its unfair to compare him to Tannehill.
Dont know if you saw it but last year he only lost 1 game and that was to South Carolina...UCF had a good team last year and most of it had to do with bortles flipping a switch and getting it in the previous year's bowl game...

1. bortles has a much better long ball than Thill...

2. Bortles is slower but his offense last year allowed him the option to move...I hope to see thill move this year the same way bortles did last year and allow Wallace to get open by freezing a defense with the threat of a run...

3. Honestly my biggest knock on blake is handing off the ball...i wondered if it was just our RBs last year but ive seen some bad hand offs in preseason this year...

Anyways with tannehills new offence we will see if it was him getting tunnel vision or his coaches telling him not to leave the pocket...

I wish him luck since he is our QB but I would take blake any day...
