Tannehill vs Luck Updated

Uhm, just out of curiosity, when was the last time he fumbled? Or threw a pick when his arm got hit as he threw the ball? Because now that he has one competent tackle, it doesn't seem to be happening much.

It appears he has fixed his fumble problems....0 in the last three games

bingo...a tackle that doesn't get picked up and walked back into his lap and i'll be damn no fumbles...despite that tackle allowing two sacks to san diego

competent tackle play fumbles with tannehill become few and far between and blindside hits...that fumble thing was another nauseating one...qbs fumble when they get hit on their throwing arm stepping up or clean blindside pressure or yes when they run the ball into the secondary and the defender puts a hat on the football like against the saints...

Frankly, I don't care if Tannehill will ever be as good as Luck. Just that he is good enough. Only 3 or 4 of the last 12 SBs have been won by QBs considered one of the very, best at the time they won. P Manning, Brees, Rodgers, and probably Brady when he won his third were considered top 4 or 5 QBs in the league. E Manning, Roethlisberger, Flacco, Johnson were all good to very good and are well within Tannehill's potential.

Neither Roethlisberger or E Manning are as good as P Manning, or Brees, or Rodgers yet both have 2 SBs.

this is true...you don't have to be the best...you just have to be one of the best...tannehill can be one of those guys...

The majority of the forum would've said the same thing about Chad Henne during his second year as a starter, or even after that year, yet Henne never improved from there.

I'd say it's high time this forum realized its fallibility when it comes to predicting the future success of its quarterback, or estimating his "potential." We probably ought to just say we have no idea about that.

I personally never thought Henne was anything special, didn't like him when they drafted him and never had high hopes for him in a Phins uni, Maybe that's just me, but I saw him as the 2nd coming of AJ Feeley.

I agree with this. I do not believe that Tannehill is elite right now but I do see all of the attributes that an NFL team looks for in a franchise QB. He's big, strong, athletic, tough, can make every throw and by all accounts is a very hard worker. I'll admit that I nearly bit the top of my beer can off when he missed the deep ball to Wallace Sunday because it was a sure TD but these things happen (see Brady his first couple years) and over time their chemistry and timing should improve. Wallace has top-of-the-food-chain NFL speed and it not easily adjusted to especially when other factors come into play such as whether or not he got a free release. Hopefully this can be improved. As for his pocket presence, it needs improvement but QBs aren't born with great pocket presence. It's something that's developed with experience. The comparisons to Luck are a bit shallow. Luck had much more experience playing QB and college and had the benefit of superior coaching. I'm not saying Tannehill will ever be on Luck's level but I'm also not convinced that he won't. Only time will tell, but it's way to early to label him a bust or elite, but I'm willing to bet it's the latter.

How much?

This is not relevant to the discussion of Tannehill's potential no matter how many times you post versions of this same inane comment.

You also don't seem to understand the difference between these two statements:

Tannehill has the potential to be as good as....

Tannehill will be as good as....

How much?

Well I don't know. Why don't you concoct on of your Rain Man inspired matrices with different criteria and and odds and we'll discuss it. Hopefully that will keep you busy enough to stop making Tannehill bashing threads for a while.

that's pretty much what i have been trying to tell people...if tannehills pocket handling was elite he would be hitting wallace more deep like roethlisberger who kept plays alive by stepping up and creating space did with wallace...but this is a 2nd year qb a year and a half as an nfl starter who is developing in all regards they just don't come out of the womb with andrew luck like pocket handling but once in a blue moon...and also the protection at the tackle position til recently has been awful and it can't just be ignored...

i will never get why people want to label this kid not the guy already when he's shown more already than any qb since marino has from a presnap read aspect and upside wise...wallace also is a guy that is easy to underthrow hard to overthrow and he's left plays on the field himself not iding coverage and leverage properly and coming out of his cuts away from contact where the ball is thrown...

i can't for the life of me understand how people can look around the league at the qb position at the young signal callers and feel better about those guys futures than ryan tannehills...foolish stuff

he's provided he develops in the pocket the tom brady of the next decade...thing is though i said next year top 5 i may be a little rich on that but this kid won't be done and a finished product for maybe 2 more years even...at 27-28 i expect this no huddle offense leading terrific presnap coverage reader to be dominating the league...everything is there just experience and development...i had a conviction on that kid very early i understand the development and reps that are needed but it's all there...just give it time

do people understand how much he throws the ball away from coverage...rarely late on anything his timing with his throws is terrific and he's helped a guy like clay play frankly above his pay grade...

i guess people need 30 plus tds to validate an nfl qb...well they will get it in time...

Are you saying there's something that could stop him from realizing his potential?

Well I don't know.
Are you saying you wouldn't bet a lot on it?

I don't get it either. I've been following this team since Griese was under center and I have not been excited about a QB since Marino retired until now. This is not based on hope, hype, or stats. It's about watching the kid play. Pre-snap reads and adjustments have improved. Accuracy and ball placement, not perfect, but improved. We've all seen him make throws into tight windows in the last couple weeks that only a handful of QBs can make right now, oh and by the way under heavy pressure. It's just that nobody makes threads about these throws, only the ones he misses. Just give the kid time and enjoy the ride, you'll be welcome back on the bandwagon when he's lighting it up and winning playoff games over the next decade.
