Tannehill's Deep Post (and although it's been said many times many waysss....)

Meh. I was at a live game in Indy where Peyton Manning got his jaw broken by Lorenzo Bromell and Jay Fiedler hit Chris Chambers deep on a beautiful deep ball in the 4th qtr to win the game 27-23.

I was at that game! And that play was the most memorable of the day for me. Chambers got behind the defense quick... almost as soon as the ball was snapped. As soon as I saw him beside the CB I stood up and said "GONE!". Fielder launched a rainbow that seem like it hung in the air forever.

Fiedler was a general. He didn't have an ounce of talent. But he was a great leader. I always liked Fielder. Moore reminds me, in some ways, of Fiedler's ability to lead. He steps on the field and it seems like those 10 guys in the huddle would die for him. Not the best talent, but a leader.

I know there is a constant deliberation on this board whether or not Tannehill is THE QB for us. Is he better than Player X or Player Y? I don't care.

Tannehill is serviceable. Moore is serviceable.

Defense wins championships. Teams win championships.

As long as we have suffered losing.... as long as we have suffered mediocrity... and as many coaches that have come through this door.... as many regimes that have not been given proper time to truly build a foundation and win....

It is time for patience.

Maybe Tannehill is not the answer. Maybe neither is Wallace or Hartline or Miller or Moreno or any other player on this team. Maybe none of them are the best at what they do.

It's this team that needs to be the best at what they do. Being the best team is all that matters.

New offense, new OLine... new faces lining the depth chart. New faces in the FO and in the coaching ranks. It takes time.

I think we've seen enough to know we are getting better. And even as we get better, we will lose. We will have moments we look like a high school team. But I look at the overall momentum we've started to establish:

We have solid depth...
We have young talent...
We have proven we can draft better...
We have proven we can find undrafted talent...
We have proven we can overcome a scandal... Even if our poor judgement led to it.
We have improved every year under Philbin.

Are we Super Bowl bound? Not yet.

But compare us to the franchise that drafted Ted Ginn, Jr. See how far we've come.

It will take more time. But we are getting better. And right now, maintaining improvement each year and building our franchise up from the ground is just as important to winning a championship.

We need a foundation... we are building it.

Maybe Tannehill won't be the QB that gets us to the Super Bowl. But in the meantime, he allows us to build our roster, win and develop a foundation for winning.

Brady and Bellichick's reign is nearly over. We need to establish the foundation for the changing the power in the AFC East.

We need to get better every year and we need to stop destroying our team every 3 years. Continue to build the team at every position. Get better, teach and manufacture a culture for winning.

Tannehill will always have shortcomings. All QBs do. How the team plays as a unit... is much more important.

Let's worry more about improving than we worry about being perfect.

One thing I remember about Fiedler (as much as he drove me nuts)....I remember he was vying for the starting QB job with Damon Huard. Huard had his moments with the Phins. There were some fans that wanted him to start over Fiedler. In watching the two play, one thing was clear....Fiedler anticipated the receivers' breaks much better and seemed to be able to throw the ball to the spot where the receiver would end up meeting the ball. Huard, on the other hand, never seemed to have that anticipation. I think Tannehill has the same deficiency.

By the way, I was not a Jay Fiedler fan.

Our defense let Fieldler down more often than not - he wasnn't nearly as bad as people suggest

Ray Lucas that's bad

The kid has the tools, he has shown us all that. The question is, will he "flip the switch" and take it to the next level. A remember another QB who came out of the gate rough, Drew Brees. Early on he didn't look so hot, then the light bulb came on. I just don't know if it will happen soon enough for this fanbase. I have a feeling we will cut bait and watch him become a pro bowler for another team in 3 years. I guess we have the season to find out.

I have a three year rule with this. This is the year he should be showing the most progression. Yea..we've not seen enough, imo. IF it continues for the remainder of the season, I say keep him, get rid of Moore and sign/draft/trade competition. But the problem is there is a drought of QBs.

All of this because A. we are so starved as a fan base for a winner and B. we were spoiled all those years with Marino magic. Lets let them play out a few more games before we burn Tannehill at the stake.

I for one and not spoiled and have not been for a long time. Was I spoiled for the first few years after Marino retired? Sure. Now I am just tired of mediocre QB play.

Let's see if Lazor can help Tannehill to improve his deeper throws. All of this talk about the greatness of Fiedler's arm is a bit of revisionist history. I was a fan but Jay did not have a great arm. I remember his great will to win and he was surprisingly athletic, but the greatness of his deep passes - please, they were too few to mention. Fiedler was not in the same league as Marino.
I also remember Fiedler throwing some terrible interceptions. That team was built around the Defense. The Offense had very few weapons at WR compared to what we have today.

TO the OP, I have to disagree with your argument about the QBs not worrying about their throws getting there. There are many reason a QB will watch a throw with great anticipation wondering the results of the play. A QB might wonder if the WR will catch the ball, or if the safety will get over in time or if the wind will get under the throw, that doesn't mean he is not confident in the throw.

Saying you never jumped around wondering the results of a pass while it was in the air puts you in the extreme minority. There is no way you could know the results of a play unless you watch it. The throw is just one part of many to complete a successful pass. To say a QB isn't interested in watching it would be like saying a basketball player isn't interested in his shot after if leaves his hand. Part of their follow through is concentrating on the ball as it leaves their hand all the way to the basket.

Every QB I have ever seen is watching, hoping, or doing whatever, as they concentrate on the ball as it travels down field. How many times have you seen a QB get hit as he releases the ball and still never take his eyes off the ball, or roll over and try to find the ball in the air with his eyes before it gets to it's destination? All QBs watch the ball with great anticipation.

I think you misunderstood what i was getting at, Obviously every QB who throws a ball is going to want to see what happens. Im not acting like QB's turn their back once they release the ball but pretty much EVERY deep ball Tannehill throws he is reacting like this. To me it show a lack of confidence in his accuracy. Ask anyone who studied this kid in college I can't ever remember him throwing ONE good deep post not one. WHen he would throw deep go routes he was wildly inaccurate and would occasionally get bailed out be the almighty Jeff Fuller.

Point being when Qb's who have a good deep ball launch it and concentrate on the pass with confidence,Tannehill on the other hand launches it and looks like he's waiting for his powerball number to show up.

so i've been on this forum for years and never really understood how these stars get picked on the thread title. Like sure this isn't the greatest post but it seems to be a pretty good conversation that garnered a decent amount of traffic.

How does it get 1 star? like geeze the guy who started a thread about being happy to have Daniel Thomas back got the same amount of stars as this thread.

Folks, we have reached the point where we are discussing the quarterback's body language while a ball is in the air.

Holy ****.

I've maintained for a long time the arc on his ball is a problem outside of the short/intermediate area. I remember CKParrot argued with me nonstop.

RT is starting to remind me of Kaepernick and his inability to get the ball to turnover in the air. To drop it in as opposed to sticking it in. Meh. 3years of it, I don't see it changing.

So Tannehill throwing perfect deep balls to Sims a and Hartline that they dropped didn't really happen right? Ok, got ya.

I would expect a long TD pass every other game. 8 per year. Opportunities are there.
Every game you need to hit one long pass. It doesn't need to be a TD. Not a lot to ask for IMO

Ok. Of course opportunities are there, every QB misses open receivers. Every game you need to hit one long pass? Is a Long pass 20 yards, 30, 50? What if it's dropped? I still haven't seen it yet but I heard he threw a sweet one to Hartline Sunday that was dropped. I could easily pull out 8 great Tannehill highlight passes from last year. There are 14 games left, and now that our running back (our real one, Thomas and Miller don't count) I'm sure the passing game will increase.

P.S. I don't think most people on this board would be happy with one long pass per game. They expect a high flying shoot-out, with Tannehill putting the team on his back. Not reasonable.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Thank goodness there's another Tannehill thread. I was having difficulty trying to track down the other 24 ****ing Tannehill threads started on this forum since Sunday afternoon.

Youre right that we have a good team with some really good players on it. It is a shame we keep wasting opportunities by rolling out garbage QBs like Henne and Tannehill.

If this team wants to make the playoffs, it will take Matt Moore coming in and playing decent. This team has no chance of winning long term with Hennehill at QB.

If you actually had any backbone or decency I would propose a sig bet on this very issue.

Ok. Of course opportunities are there, every QB misses open receivers. Every game you need to hit one long pass? Is a Long pass 20 yards, 30, 50? What if it's dropped? To me a long pass is one that travels over 21 yards in the air down field. You need to hit one of those every game to loosen the defense and make sure they are not crowding the line of scrimmage. ESPN Stat Splits track these type of passes so it is easy to see who hits these plays and who doesn't.

To me drops are in completions. That is all. If you want to count good passes thrown that is fine to make you feel good about your QB. But the long completion is the only thing that will make the defense back off the line of scrimmage. Being close doesn't get it done.

And yes there are 8 highlights you can find with RT17 last year. But you can't find 8 long TD's. You know the play where the WR gets behind the defensive and the QB has to deliver the TD throw. He hasn't even had 8 of those in 34 games. You have to make that play when it is there.

A good example of what I find acceptable is the long ball stats of Andy Dalton last year. He completed 18 of 67 attempts thrown over 21 yards in the air. Of those 18 completion 8 went for TD's. Only 3 of the 67 were intercepted. 1 long completion every game on average and 1 long TD every other game. This opens up the LOS for the Bengals and allows them to run and make good plays on the short passes.
http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/14012/year/2013/andy-dalton

To me this is a bare minimum to be a playoff team.
Notice I am not expecting top of the league production

Peyton Manning 32 of 67 with 10 Td's and 4 Ints on these same type of passes. 2 per game and more than 1 TD every other game.
http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/1428/year/2013/peyton-manning

In his rookie season RT17 was 15 for 45 with 3 Td's and 2 ints
http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/14876/year/2012/ryan-tannehill

Last year RT17 was 12 for 58 on these type passes with 3 TD's and 4 Ints
http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/14876/year/2013/ryan-tannehill

so for this year 0 for 3 with 0 TD's and 1 Int
http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/14876/ryan-tannehill

So that is only 6 long TD passes in 34 games. Not going to cut it and that is why the LOS is being crowded by every team that faces us.
Hope this help explain my rationale.
