Meh. I was at a live game in Indy where Peyton Manning got his jaw broken by Lorenzo Bromell and Jay Fiedler hit Chris Chambers deep on a beautiful deep ball in the 4th qtr to win the game 27-23.
I was at that game! And that play was the most memorable of the day for me. Chambers got behind the defense quick... almost as soon as the ball was snapped. As soon as I saw him beside the CB I stood up and said "GONE!". Fielder launched a rainbow that seem like it hung in the air forever.
Fiedler was a general. He didn't have an ounce of talent. But he was a great leader. I always liked Fielder. Moore reminds me, in some ways, of Fiedler's ability to lead. He steps on the field and it seems like those 10 guys in the huddle would die for him. Not the best talent, but a leader.
I know there is a constant deliberation on this board whether or not Tannehill is THE QB for us. Is he better than Player X or Player Y? I don't care.
Tannehill is serviceable. Moore is serviceable.
Defense wins championships. Teams win championships.
As long as we have suffered losing.... as long as we have suffered mediocrity... and as many coaches that have come through this door.... as many regimes that have not been given proper time to truly build a foundation and win....
It is time for patience.
Maybe Tannehill is not the answer. Maybe neither is Wallace or Hartline or Miller or Moreno or any other player on this team. Maybe none of them are the best at what they do.
It's this team that needs to be the best at what they do. Being the best team is all that matters.
New offense, new OLine... new faces lining the depth chart. New faces in the FO and in the coaching ranks. It takes time.
I think we've seen enough to know we are getting better. And even as we get better, we will lose. We will have moments we look like a high school team. But I look at the overall momentum we've started to establish:
We have solid depth...
We have young talent...
We have proven we can draft better...
We have proven we can find undrafted talent...
We have proven we can overcome a scandal... Even if our poor judgement led to it.
We have improved every year under Philbin.
Are we Super Bowl bound? Not yet.
But compare us to the franchise that drafted Ted Ginn, Jr. See how far we've come.
It will take more time. But we are getting better. And right now, maintaining improvement each year and building our franchise up from the ground is just as important to winning a championship.
We need a foundation... we are building it.
Maybe Tannehill won't be the QB that gets us to the Super Bowl. But in the meantime, he allows us to build our roster, win and develop a foundation for winning.
Brady and Bellichick's reign is nearly over. We need to establish the foundation for the changing the power in the AFC East.
We need to get better every year and we need to stop destroying our team every 3 years. Continue to build the team at every position. Get better, teach and manufacture a culture for winning.
Tannehill will always have shortcomings. All QBs do. How the team plays as a unit... is much more important.
Let's worry more about improving than we worry about being perfect.
