Tanny is a bust

All young QBs struggle. Tom Brady's first year in the league, everyone talked about how cruddy his deep ball was.

I remember arguing -- with a Patriots fan -- on another message board about it. I said that I thought Brady was going to be a huge upgrade over Bledsoe and the guy insisted that Brady couldn't sling it deep worth a crap. Boy how that changed by the end of 2003.

Look at Cam Newton's struggles in Carolina. I can't believe there are people who think that guy sucks or is a bust. He is developing. And he is developing into a damn good quarterback.

But, Tannehill should be great now and making up for the crap o-line and help the defense stop the run, oh he should also be helping on third and long and go against his coach and change all the plays....

He also took 42 passes to get 229 yards, which is a poor YPA.

The team scored below a half a point per pass attempt, whereas the Buccaneers scored over a point per pass attempt, which is about what the Denver Broncos have done this year with Peyton Manning and company.

Tannehill's pass attempts on the other hand yielded a poor number of yards and a poor number of points, and that has been a problem for him all year.

I have no idea how good the guy will be in a year or two, but right now he's playing at a level associated with a low likelihood of winning in the NFL.

are you a couple?

Is Ryan Tannehill a great QB right now? No.

However, when he was drafted, what was the sentiment on this very board? That he would need at least a year to develop. Many, including me, thought that we signed David Garrard as a stopgap starter and that Tannehill would spend a year on the bench.

What are the expectations? Should Ryan Tannehill be a top 5 QB right now? Top 10? Do you give him any slack for having some of the worst pass protection in football? How about the very high number of drops (top 3 in the NFL) he's dealing with? Are you comparing his play right now to his play last year and factoring in the improvement he has made since he took over as the Dolphins starter?

It's stunning to me that someone looks at him right now and declares 'bust.' It's like you are living in a vacuum where the only good QBs in NFL history all followed the career arc of Dan Marino.

That's the most unfair of expectations.

Of course as soon as someone points out how those areas of the team are functioning no more poorly than the average team in the league, Tannehill will be rehabilitated by discounting the legitimacy of the kind of information that supports it, while the same kind of information is used by the same people to support the idea that other teams are functioning better in that regard. ;)

People are going to shoehorn information into making it support whatever they want to believe. :)

Of course part of the problem is that you have multiple arguments going on at the same time here.

You have the people who think he's a bust because the team has a losing record.

And then you have the guys who think he's a bust because he's not putting up, to borrow a phrase from Jim Irsay, Star Wars numbers.

And then you have Rain Man over here just trying to find some K-Mart shirts that fit properly.

you forgot me who stands by the guy will be a top 5 qb in the league and that level guy for the long haul...

I just watched the movie trouble with the curve last night, now every time I see one of your posts, I picture the guy that gets fired at the end... Only relies on stats and hasn't been out to see the actual games...

At some point, Tannehill may have to overcome some of this team's deficiencies if we are to ever see him take off as the Miami QB. We all realize the line sucks this season . . . so I don't expect much more than I've seen from him. Then next year we possibly go into a new regime, which means new OC, new HC, new schemes . . . so if he struggle next year it will be used as an excuse. Alot of QBs don't get a 4th year to prove their worth. Alex Smith did, but he's the exception to the rule. The odds are stacked up against him right now and there haven't been "enough" moments of potential greatness at this time to be sure that he'll overcome those odds. It's just truth . . . you don't have to like it.

The labeling of him as a bust falls in line to the type of society we live in today. Somebody wants to call it early so they can be right, but when he become a legit top 10 QB that person will be no where to be found. It's natural and it's commonplace in a forum like this.

One thing is for certain, he has more potential than anything we've seen in 13 years since Dan Marino retired . . . he deserves a little more credit and support than he has been given.

This might be the most illogical post about football that I have ever read. By your logic, the Fins scored 1.46 points per rushing attempt while the Bucs only scored 0.59 points per rush. Guess our running game really showed them....

Lol. Either your not around much, or you haven't seen all the posts by Sir Stats. 90% of his posts are like this.

And every time I see someone here who relies only on his observations of the games, and doesn't bother to check and balance those observations with objective information to account for the potential for confirmation bias, I think of these couple things:
