Really, is it a slap in the face to South Florida fans, or is it that Canes fans view it as a slap in the face to them? I think it is more about the Canes fans than the typical "South Florida" fan. The Canes were given their chance, they declined it, so it isn't like the Dolphins went after the Gators and turned their back on Hurricanes. I get that Canes fans hate the idea of a celebration of the Gators in the stadium they play their home games in(though the Dolphins are the main tenant). Though these Canes fans need to remember that while they play in this stadium, it is not THEIR stadium and this event is NOT happening during one of THEIR games. Apparently there are over 100,000 Gator alumni in the South Florida area, so I can see why the Gators were the alternate once the Canes declined.
If you are a South Florida fan but an alumni of lets say Ohio State, do you really think this "Gator Day" is a slap in your face? I highly doubt it. You probably say "oh well, no big deal" and that is the end of it. The ones in an uproar are Hurricanes fans, and maybe some others, but Canes fans are likely the one with the biggest problem. Even though this game is not happening during a Canes game or even on the same day as a Canes game. This is a NFL game that is going to use like 10 minutes at halftime to recognize a national championship of a team from the state of Flordia(the same state that the Dolphins are from). Again, this easily could have been Canes day, but they declined the invite.
Do these "South Florida fans" get in an uproar when the NFL holds the Super Bowl between two different teams in the Dolphins stadium? How is a 10 minute halftime celebration worse than that?
