First off, this is NOT a Tim Tebow day as some think it is. They are celebrating the Gators national championship as a gimmick to attract more fans in Florida during the Gators bye week. When this day was set up, it was not even certain if Tebow was going to be on the Broncos roster, let alone starting. If you consider this Tim Tebow day, you might as well call it Mike Pouncey day also, since both are being recognized for their accomplishments in COLLEGE. This is NOTHING like a Tom Brady day, this is a celebration that has NOTHING to do with the NFL.
If the Dolphins had their way, this would have been Hurricanes day, but the Miami Hurricanes DECLINED the invitation. Sure it is a gimmick to get more fans in the stadium. The fans haven't been able to fill the stadium for well over a decade. Sure they may not be bringing in Dolphins fans, but I don't think 2,000 Gator fans are going to make a huge dent in the crowd. Opposing fans already fill a large part of the stadium, and people have told me they don't have a problem with it. Not sure why they would now.
I have also been told that winning cures all, so as long as the Dolphins start winning fans will fill the stadium and no one will care about this Gatros day in the future. Though if it does become a long term problem, I am sure Ross knows there is a nice new stadium being built in Los Angeles with some very hungry football fans. But we will cross that bridge when/if we have to.
This is almost a nyjunc level spin job. Lets look at the facts here:
1. Miami is Cane territory. Gainesville is not even in South Florida. Hell, its not even Central Florida. Why the ever loving **** do us South Floridians give three ****s about whether the Gators won a championship a couple years ago? Most of us dont. Matter of fact, most of us hate the Gators. Let me know when the Jags have a ceremony honoring the Canes. It wont happen. Why? Nobody up there cares. People up there are Gators/Noles fans. They hate the Canes.
2. With that being said, how can you put a true number on how this impacted ticket sales? You can see that 3k people bought tickets because of it. How many didnt because of it? I know a few people who feel that way and I was thinking about going down for the game, but now I definitely am not. And it extends beyond this week. Whats the impact of this decision on future sales? Does proving to be totally incompetent and pathetic as an owner suddenly inspire people to buy seats? Nope.
3. We will become a bigger laughing stock than ever before. And thats saying a lot. We are like the Dan Marino of laughing stocks. We set records and then blow them out the water. Unreal. How much you wanna bet that we are featured on PTI and Around the Horn leading up to that game with the hosts getting LOLs at our expense. Talk show hosts are gonna have a field day with this. It really is hilarious if it were not us. If the Jets did something this stupid Id be trolling nyjunc nonstop right now. Im sure being ridiculed and mocked will improve future ticket sales. Thats just genius.
4. I dont give a damn if Tebow wasnt a lock for the roster at the time. We knew damn well that the Broncos were on our schedule and we knew damn well that there was a non-zero chance that Tebow wuld be starting that game. That fact alone makes it utterly retarded to even higher degrees.
5. I get that we happen to have a championship Gator. Cool. I seriously dont give a ****, but cool. Good for him. Im sure he had fun. That does not change the fact that the undisputed star and leader of that team is the starting QB on the team we are playing that day. Half them inbred Gator fans cant even tell you who was on that team except Tebow. His fans will be out in full force. For someone who claims to despise opposing fans at our stadium, you are being hypocritical to the 56th power. Honestly, its not different than Tom Brady Day at all. When people think Gators NC, they think Tebow. He was the QB, the star. Pouncey was the LG. Most Gator fans dont even care. Nobody cares. He was not willing his team to victory like Tebow. Im willing to bet you see more Tebow jerseys than just about any other play that week.
In short, spin it how you like, but we are honoring Tebow and the crowd will reflect it. Tebow/Broncos bandwagon fans are gonna out in full force. People in the Miami area despise that team. The promotion is retarded. End of story.
And **** the Gators.
