The Case For Keeping Wake A Dolphin

Robert Quinn will be one of the first cuts, with an instant $12 million in savings it's an easy move. If they could swing a trade to a full time 4-3 team, I would jump for joy. Harris was quiet and might even end up as a LB in the new system. Wake is a free agent and rebuilds usually don't involve becoming the highest bidder for a 37 year old specialist. The only way he stays is with an extreme hometown discount, imo.
All this makes the cupboard pretty bare at DE. I can see signing some cuts or bargains but they won't be spending cash for one. The future at DE will be drafted, probably early and often(maybe for a couple seasons).

Geez... Always thought Cam was a class dude and has more than earned the fans support...

The dude may not be elite at this point -- but I have to assume a dude like Flores can find a way to get

some quality part time production out of his (still significant) skill set.

Beyond that -- for gawds snakes we're NOT gonna replace 80% of the roster in 1 year!

I cast my vote in support of Cam.

Wake should decide. He has earned that right. Would love to see him next year. The one guy who shows up every game and some of want to get rid of him? What does it hurt to keep him? You all acting like he is some washed up player. He may not be top 5 any more but he is well above average.

Wake should have been gone 3 years ago. This is why we're stuck in the middle of the pack and NE keeps on winning. Does BB cares if any player retires as a Pats?
He wanted to trade Gronk. That's how they keep winning. They trade away vets for picks or let them go into free agency when they want too much money and they get comp picks. Here people want to over pay for every player we drafted and they want every veteran to remain here and get nothing in return. I just hope that Flores will change that dumb mentality.
Sorry, but this theory really doesn't apply to Cam Wake. First of all, he was not and has never been overpaid - in fact, he has been perpetually underpaid. Secondly, at his age, I doubt very much we would've gotten much back for him in a trade (3rd rounder maybe?). Finally, he probably would settle for yet another hometown discount at say $8M for another two years, and I doubt you could get anything near his productivity for that price on the open market. And it's not like he's taking snaps away (or dollars) from some young good prospect right now.

Having said that, if he wants to chase the ring, you should let him - he's earned that. But if he wants to stay here at a reasonable price, well why wouldn't you let him? Unless you were wanting to break the bank for Demarcus Lawrence or someone like that...

I hope the ball is in his court. If he wants to go to a winner, I would love to see him with an opportunity to get a ring. He deserves it. There was rumours of a trade to the Rams last season, which would have been a great fit for him. I don't know if the fins didn't want to trade or if he wants to stay.

But if he wants another season, he should get it. He was still productive in two seasons in a historically bad scheme.

I'm a fan, obviously. I'd love for him to stay on and coach after he does retire as he's the most professional guy we've had in years. A few $$ going his way next season isn't going to make any difference if we're making big cuts elsewhere.

Your either rebuilding with youth or your not... it’s pathetic to keep a 37 year old player in a season where many are advocating waiting two more drafts to even get a QB.

The classy thing to do is ask the man what he wishes... to move on and chase a ring...or...retire a Dolphin?

The only way the Dolphins should keep him is if he's willing to take a hometown discount. I said last year, I thought the Dolphins should have either offered him a pay cut or his release. He should have been earning what Julius Peppers had earned the last 2 years, somewhere closer to 5 Mil, not 9 or 10 mil. Peppers received between 4-5 million his last 2 seasons before his retirement this year because he was a part time player. When are the Dolphins going to wise up, I hope soon!!

The Patriots are an amazingly well run team that somehow manages to consistently move from and replace players that other teams would re-sign. They traded Jamie Collins to the Browns rather than extend him (a former second round pick) and replaced him with Kyle Van Noy, a former second round pick the Lions gave away for a 7th round pick. They let Malcom Butler (undrafted!) walk in free agency to Tennessee; and Dion Lewis, a player they picked up off the scrap heap, joined him in Tennessee. There are not many teams in the league that can replicate what the Patriots do, especially on the regularity in which the Patriots do it. It would be great for us to replicate their system, but realistically that is easier said than done because teams do struggle to replace certain players they let walk. Granted that’s not a reason to pay them, but following the Patriot way is not easy otherwise every team would do it.

so according to wiki... currently we have 8 DL under contract..

then Woodard is ERFA

Maybe 2 of those Taylor and Godchaux could even be in talks of being in our long term plans for rebuild, unless the new staff magically gets something out of Harris... Branch and Quinn are all but expected to be gone. Carradine and Norton are pretty pointless. so if you want to think about the future we need 3 good DE's currently have 0, and 3 good DT's currently have 2 w/ 1 serviceable. we're not going to fill all those spots in one year, so there really is no reason not to bring wake back. I mean hell if we do draft a DE round 1, maybe we can rub off on the new DE better than he did Harris. Ive been saying for awhile now though that I would love us to signed wake to a team friend/trade friendly deal with expectations that as soon as he got sack 100 we would trade him to a contender. and yes I know we are going to get a late round or conditional pick for him, but he holds up the 100 plaque in Miami, and he gets his chance for a ring. But if he wants to sign a super team friendly deal to stay with the fins, I have zero issue with him staying on as a designated rusher. hell it seems like he still gets held every friggin play just its never called.. if he wants the peppers deals then I say keep him til he wants to retires. if he wants market value for what he thinks he can get then work out the sign/play/trade scenario. hell id even see if he would be willing to wait til after the draft to negotiate so we can see exactly what direction this team is going. if Murray slides in r1 to us and we draft him I almost think you have to retool ASAP instead of it being a slow process

Depends on the price, if they sign him, I'd bet he'll be the best pass rusher on the team, again.

As far as I'm concerned, it should be completely up to Wake what he does, whether that's sign on for another year here, retire or move on to a team that actually stands a chance. Unlike some other players, Cam has built up way more credit in the dolphins bank to deserve nothing but our thanks and best wishes and the right to decide what's next in his future.

When I talked about over paying players I wasn't talking about him. Just in general. I don't want to go for any big name free agents this year but I want us to build the right way and having older players taking snaps away from the younger guys that we need to build around will not help us in the long run. Face it, Wake will not win a ring here. By the time we're ready to compete he'll be gone anyway so why prolong the inevitable?

I love Wake but there is no need for the Dolphins to hold him back. Let him chase a playoff w3in for Christ sake. There is no place for a 37 year old DE on this team next season.

Having veterans on a team that is rebuilding that prepare, practice, take care of their bodies and bring leadership and display high moral to the team and locker room is the right and smart thing to do. Wake is one of those type of players.

It's one thing to have coaches telling players they should do all those things and it's a whole other level when players are demonstrating those things.

Honestly, for his own sake I hope the Dolphins let him go so he can sign on with a contender and maybe experience a meaningful playoff season for once...
