The Chicago White Sox Thread

Expect to hear some wild rumors over the winter, but don't expect the White Sox to add a big-name player such as Baltimore's Miguel Tejada or Washington's Alfonso Soriano. Do expect GM Ken Williams to make a run at Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford, even if the asking price for the outfielder is a front-line starter and top prospect or two.

The Phils would have interest in Seattle's Adrian Beltre, but it looks like the Mariners might not make him available. Joe Crede would be a nice fit if the White Sox deal him. Morgan Ensberg and Hank Blalock are available.
-- Philadelphia Inquire

White Sox third baseman Joe Crede said Sunday he will decide "pretty soon" whether to undergo outpatient surgery on his stiff lower back. Crede said he was leaning toward avoiding surgery after meeting with a specialist last month.

Moving Joe Crede would be idiotic. He's an elite 3b who is as good defensively as anybody and very good offensively. Ensberg is available the 'Stros have Huff and I think he could be a good pickup for any team looking for 3b help. I'd love to see Carl Crawford but the Sox don't have a front line starter. I'd assume the top prospects would be some combination of Anderson/Fields/Sweeney or maybe even Haeger but that probably isn't enough. The funny thing about this is if Williams did not deal for Vazquez last year Young is the type of player that I think Ozzie would love.

Manager Ozzie Guillen is a big fan of Boston shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who is headed toward free agency. General manager Ken Williams, on the other hand, loves Juan Uribe.

Don't look for the Marlins to pursue a center fielder via free agency, so shelve those thoughts of a Juan Pierre reunion. Instead, the Marlins will pursue a trade for a budding two-way player with low service time. Brian Anderson (White Sox), Willy Tavares (Astros) and Matt Kemp (Dodgers) all interest the Marlins, according to baseball sources.

White Sox first baseman Jim Thome rebounded from an injury-marred 2005 campaign to finish the 2006 season tied for third in the American League with 42 home runs, prompting fans to name him the American League Comeback Player of the Year.

Congratulations Jim Thome!!!!!

The White Sox have to make a decision on the future of slumping left-hander Neal Cotts. According to one source within the organization, Cotts (1-2, 5.17 ERA) will be shopped this winter. That doesn't mean he will be moved, but they will see what the market value is for him.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is a big fan of Chone Figgins, and his club could use a leadoff hitter with Chicago not likely to tender Scott Podsednik a new contract. Joe Crede would provide an answer at third base for the Angels, while also adding a much-needed boost to the lineup, so the common ground is in place for a potential deal.

Trading Joe Crede for Chone Figgins would be a horrendous move.

I do not want Figgins on the White Sox. He is terrible.
Do not want to lose Crede either, but it could be a smoke screen.
We need to rid Vasquez, terrible pitcher.:shakeno:

Amid a whirlwind of complicated Chicago/New York connections, the Cubs could wind up with Lou Piniella as manager because of Alex Rodriguez, and Rodriguez could wind up as a White Sox partly because of Piniella. White Sox general manager Kenny Williams, according to those in the know, long has had a "thing" for Rodriguez.

White Sox shortstop Juan Uribe and his brother are being investigated in the Dominican Republic for their alleged involvement in the shooting of two men, according to El Nacional newspaper. No one was killed in the incident, which took place Friday night in San Cristobal, about 15 miles from Uribe's hometown of Bani.

The White Sox haven't made an official announcement, but they're expected to pick up the 2007 option on right fielder Jermaine Dye.

The more likely Chicago scenario, according to baseball sources, would involve A-Rod and the White Sox. They have more attractive pieces to offer - several pitchers, including Brandon McCarthy and Mark Buehrle as well as third baseman Joe Crede - and Sox GM Ken Williams has a longstanding (and well known) affinity for Rodriguez. Then again, A-Rod and Sox manager Ozzie Guillen have a spotty history.

While Juan Uribe maintains he's a potential extortion victim, White Sox general manager Ken Williams is seeking measures to ensure his shortstop's safety. Williams said Wednesday he suggested to Kevin Hallinan, Major League Baseball's vice president of security, that an MLB-authorized officer travel to the Dominican Republic to talk to Uribe about his personal security during the off-season.

If the Mets don't sign Jason Schmidt or Daisuke Matsuzaka or bring Dontrelle Willis here in a swap, maybe Freddy Garcia of the White Sox is a trade possibility.
