As for Ireland several reasons:
- threatening to make Tannehill re-enter the draft over offset language
- several players protested over compensation including the still woefully underpaid Wake
- Hartline became disgruntled at one point even tweeting about Ireland's lowball offer in the midst of his first 1000 yard season saying something like 'his offer is something I would have thought about in the offseason, its a joke now'
As for Hickey:
- the Grimes deal was very fair, I can't imagine what negotiations would have taken place to get to that number. I think Hickey just offered him that exact deal and Grimes signed it right away. And both men left the office happy.
- we heard rumors that Hickey offered both Starks and Soliai $5 million per deals. I don't know if they were first to sign gets it or just open ended take it or leave it deals but I don't think any major negotiation took place after the initial offer. To be honest I don't think he expected either of them to be back
- it appears as though we overpaid both Moreno and Finnegan as we were apparently the only team courting them and we paid them relatively large contracts considering there was no other interest.
Phinatic8u may be partially right, but at least there is a shred of evidence that their negotiation styles are different. It probably is a lot of wishful thinking though. I think if you're a first round pick and expected to be the face of a franchise you're going to be super excited and a good organization should try to nurture and carry that excitement over into the actual games. You want Tannehill's agent to come back to him with a no brainer "sign on the dotted line this is a more than fair contract and CONGRATS AND GOOD LUCK YOUNG MAN!!!!"
Instead what he got was "welp, looks like your new team wants to play hardball. Don't stress about it too much though dude, but you're probably going to have to miss some of training camp..."
To build pretty much a whole new oline in one off season is good going and on top of that we appear to have good depth there as well. With a young QB that got murdered last year this was crucial to ensure he doesn't turn into a Carr and lose all trust in his line. Biggest issue addressed. Next biggest issue was the LBs, and in that regard it's really only a few promising rookies we have brought in. The rookie class as of now is looking like one of the best we have had in a long long time, making a difference in training camp and hopefully now that the season starts. Overall very pleased and I hope he is given time to finish the job.
I never understood why so many people liked Dawn and Ireland enforcing the offset language so hard. How often are you going to cut your first pick in 3 years? Is the chump change you're saving by cutting the (hopefully) few busts that aren't even worth keeping around more than a couple years really worth getting into a pissing match with every new first round pick and likely causing them to miss practice time???
Your expectations do not seem realistic. He may have paid too much, but You do not have all of the information to make your evaluations. None of us will know all of the details. I am please with his performance, and I hope I get a chance to see how he does next offseason.
Earlier this offseason we worked out Cortland Finnegan. Apparently impressed, Hickey(or his representative) talked to Finnegan's agent. Hickey wanted to sign him to a $5 million deal. Finnegan's agent wanted twice that. After they broke off the meeting and decided to wait a few days while mulling it over rumors started to float around that another team wanted Finnegan. Hickey folded and gave in to Finnegan's demands. The problem? According to reports that came out Finnegan had given his agent a deadline and was willing to sign our offer if we had waited a few more days. Oh, and no other team had actually contacted Finnegan's camp.
and lastly the buffalo bills improved....
None of us know all the details...
I'm not saying you're wrong, but without a credible link or two, I can't concur either. We already know that he was his own agent, so it would be he who was crowing about how he did a number on Hickey. Sorry, but that seems pretty unlikely or dumb for an incoming player, signed on a nice deal to do.. and Finnegan doesn't strike me as stupid. So unless I missed it (and I apologize if I did), this rendition is just convenient hearsay until proven otherwise and should not be quoted or referred to as fact - or possibly used to impugn Hickey until/unless corroborated.
fabricate stories to make it look like they do.
I was not a fan of him as GM. I really didn't like most of his FA signings. Shelley is terrible and he is the only player he brought in on the interior OL until Pouncey went down. I also thought he really dropped the ball not bringing in a LB or two. But I have to admit he did a good job in the draft. Still think we should have traded back in the 1st, but James has turned out better than I thought. I don't see Hickey as having done anything great, but even average is a huge upgrade over what Ireland was able to do in the draft.
(On if Michael Sam was a consideration in the seventh round in comparison to Terrence Fede) – “Obviously, we had Fede rated higher.”
