The NHL Trade Deadline Thread

Is this the year someone trades away there franchise player because the market is giving up a lot right now!

Gary Roberts to Pittsburgh if he waives his no-trade clause.

Calder to wings Kukkonen to FLYERS AND A 2ND RDER.. Jason Williams to Chicago 3 way deal!!

Philly is amazing in trading so many promising dmen and great prospects!!

Smolinski and Sopel are canucks!! Vancouver looks strong

The Canucks were busy...

They got Brian Smolinski from the Blackhawks for a conditional pick in 2007 (said to be a second that turns into a first if the Canucks resign him) and getting Brent Sopel from the Kings for a conditional 2nd and a 4th rounder in 2008. They have three 2nd rounders in the 2007 draft so they were able to turn their extra 2nd's into players to fill needs (depth at forward and on defense).

I love both moves to be honest. Adding a good, two way center who is experienced. Smolinski as a 3rd line center is perfect. Getting Sopel is a decent move, it means Fitzpatrick or Krajcek get to have seat in the press box and he's a player the Canucks know considering he played there for years. They filled two needs without giving up a 1st rounder or a player from the roster.

The Flyers traded Kyle Calder to the Blackhawks for Lasse Kukkonen (D) and a 2007 3rd round pick.

The Blackhawks then traded Kyle Calder to the Red Wings for Jason Williams.

The Caps traded Richard Zednik to the Isles for a 2007 second round pick.

unii smolinski will not play 3rd line C he will be 1st or 2nd hes gonna play with Markus

Naslund is essentially the 3rd line winger the way the Canucks are configured.

The Sedin's and Pyatt are the 1st line.

Brendan Morrison, Matt Cooke and Trevor Linden are the 2nd line.

Bulis, Josh Green and Nazzy are the 3rd line.

This is always fluid though. One night Morrison is playing with Linden and Cooke and the next night he's playing with Cooke and Naslund. Vingeault shuffles the lines nightly, if your'e playing well you move up or play more. The only thing he has done all year is keep the Sedin's together and Pyatt has been their winger about 70% of the time.

Earlier this month the Canucks called up Brendan Reid and Brad Moran and Naslund got plugged in with them. He is usually all over the line up. He always gets his ice time though.

I think Smolinski will center a line of Naslund and Bulis or Naslund and Green. The top 3 lines on the Canucks all get the same amount of ice-time anyway, they roll there lines.

Never been a fan of Smolinski. Smart two way player but far too soft in my book which doesn't bode well for the Nucks considering how creampuff they already are. Sopel will add some much needed sandpaper on the blue-line and give Bieksa some respite on the PP. He's got a gun back there.

Gainey's been a terrible GM in Montreal but Rivet for a 1st and Gorges is highway robbery considering he was currently the 7th defensemen on that squad with the emergence of Streit and that they were not going to resign him this offseason (especially with Markov, Komisarek and Souray up for FA).

The Pens are a going to be a dangerous team come playoff time if Roberts stays healthy and they get added help on the blueline.

And you're right Boik, the Isles should trade Blake who's looking for a 3 to 4 year deal. He doesn't look to me like he'll continue to be productive in his late 30's so might as well get something back now. He's been invisible these last few weeks and he could garner at least a 1st in return.
