The Official 2006 New York Yankees Thread!

The Yankees still have a long ways to go but to be 1 1/2 out isn't a bad place to be in July. Randy was good last night and if he can have the 2nd half he had last season, the Yankees will be in good shape. I still think this team needs bullpen help so that is where I hope they focus at the deadline. The Yankees COULD USE another bad but I don't think it's as big of a necessity as the arm for the bullpen is. As far as Ponson, let's see what happens. If he's garbage, he'll be gone after two or three starts and if he pitches well the Yankees will have found another diamond in the rough. Who knows, maybe putting the pinstripes on will make him pitch better. As I said, still a long way to go and being out 1 1/2 games is still 2nd place but with that in mind, Randy Johnson, who has been our third best starter this year has a better ERA then Beckett right now who is Boston's 2nd best starter. I like our chances but we have to take this series from the White Sox (at the very least) to not only solidify to the Red Sox we ain't going anywhere as far as the division is concerned, but also to the AL Central to let them know that their going to have to earn the Wild Card from the AL East!
 
They won't trade for starting pitching in my opinon. They expect Pavano back in August. I wouldn't hold your breath, but they are looking at that and taking it into consideration.

They WILL trade for a bat. Melky, Bubba.......thanks but come September find a nice spot on the bench. Carlos Lee is built for the AL. He's big, doesn't play defense well, can just hit. I don't see Millwaukee dumping a bunch of money into him knowing he is a fulltime DH esentially. If they start to slide, he will be moved. Just a guess on my part, but he may be a good fit for us.

Nah man, the only thing Lee does in the OF is kill grass by standing on it. He's doesn't have a glove, range or arm.

and he's fat getting fatter according to reports which is why Millwauke doesn't want to invest long-term in him. He's in the Thome, Ortiz, Frank Thomas mold. Big guys who can hit but can't move. Not a bad thing when you can hit like that. Hes made for the AL.

I could see NY bringing him in this year to play RF/LF whatever. Then next year use him as a part-time DH part-time OF with Giambi getting days at DH too. Platoon him in RF with Melky or something.
 
I know im gonna get killed for this by some, but so what I will say it anyway. But look at Jeter's numbers.

If he drives in 100, scores 100 and steals 30 (whcih he is on pace for) with along with winning the batting title, he will win MVP. (I think the batting title will be key)

He's gonna win it one of these years just as a "lifetime acheivement" thing for all he has done for the game and stuff. With no clear cut "position player" having a superstar year, it might be this year.

I don't think we neeed SP, we NEED Moose and randy to pitch like they can and we'll be fine there. We need another arm in the pen and a bat(assuming Hideki and Sheff don't come back until Sept), I think it's amazing we are 1 out in the L colun of Bos and just 3 back in the L column of Chi w/ all we've been through.

Who cares if he can play the field? He can hit the crap out of the ball, and that's what the Yankees need desperately. Stick him at DH if need be and play Giambi at 1B. That said, I'm not sure what they'd trade for him if they're intent on hanging onto Philip Hughes. Moreover, the NL is open enough that it's unlikely that Milwaukee will fall far enough out in the next two weeks to become a full-fledged seller.

I'm not entirely convinced that Jeter's the MVY this year, let alone the MVP. Giambi has almost the same OBP and is just killing the ball. Right now though, the MVP has to be Jim Thome.

Well considering that the Yankees (even with Matsui, Damon and Sheffield) have one of the worst defensive outfields in terms of range, throwing arm and glove, adding Carlos Lee who is even worse than any one of them or any of their back ups (Bubba, Melky) would hurt them in the defense department big time, unless of course he's used as a DH which would mean Giambi is on 1st which will hurt them in the infield. Either way it's a lose/lose situation defensively.

Yes he can hit the crap out of the ball no one is debating that, all I'm saying as well as other Yankee fans on this board is that he's a perfect DH for an AL team because he stinks at fielding.

And I disagree the Yankees need pitchers, both a starter and in the pen. They have Damon, Jeter, Arod, Giambi, and Posada in their line up right now (with Cano coming back in a week) so even without Sheffield and Matsui they should and have been able to put up runs.

If our pitching staff turns for worst in the next months, I'm sure Cashman wouldn't hesitate to grab help. Anyways 1/2 a game back, I'm happy :rolleyes:
