I didn't say don't retain guys coming off their rookie contracts. I think you need to be looking to retain your young guys before anything else, if they have proven themselves. One correction.....you say use money to retain our young guys but then give Robert Hunt as an example someone we didn't retain. Hunt had just finished his rookie contract. If you aren't going to spend money on guys coming off their rookie contract, how are you retaining your 'young guys'? Guys are locked into contracts for their first four seasons.
Hunt was a bit of an outlier though. I mean we didn't really even have a choice in re-signing him I don't think, we didn't have the cap space. Even still, he may have been a case of a young guy who is going to get paid far more than he's worth in FA, and he knows that and doesn't want to re-sign. But still, it shouldn't ever come down to a situation of not being able to afford to re-sign a young player because you've got so much money that's been wasted on guys no longer here or on the downside of their careers.
Actually brings me to another part of why its dumb to sell it all for draft picks. You're just creating a situation where all of your young players are going to be hitting free agency at the exact same time.
