Please..
Now we have simpathy for the convicted cokehead and philanderer because he suffered a brutal injury that ANY football player, including Ricky, knows there is a risk of occuring? You dont have to be a good teamate or player to almost give up your life in football.. It could happen to anyone, anytime, even the crappiest player, and even the most selfish and poor character player.. Sure, Im glad it didnt end his life, I beleive a man can reform himself, and I wish death on noone except those who take and ruin lives of others.. But this doesnt mean Irvin is somehow more worthy of a fans cheers than Ricky.. For all you know Ricky could be paralyzed tommorow at training camp.. Would that mean Ricky then almost gave up his life for Miami?
You cannot differentiate Irvin from Ricky.. They are both selfish, and once-upon-a-time drug abusers... Thing is, Ricky has a clinical disorder, Irvin did not, although he might have had bouts of depression if I am not mistaken, but not SAD.. Taking SAD into consideration, it is easy to see why Ricky would run once caught for his selfish actions...
Many people have 'butterflies' or minor nerves before a date, party, or some other event that will put them on public display, but that usually does not prevent them from attending. A true social phobia is an overwhelming fear, which in extreme cases can keep the sufferer housebound and isolated for long periods of time.
Another type of this degree is the aforementioned "social trauma" in which it is an overwhelming fear that sufferers are often abnormally afraid of being judged, watched and possibly traumatically and publically humiliated (including being thrown out and banned) in public as a result of their actions, behaviour or appearance, thus leading to isolation and reclusion as a lesson learned the hard way.

ISOLATION and RECLUSION... What did Ricky do? He became a runaway recluse.. If Irvin had SAD, he would have ran too.. no matter how good of a teamate you believe him to be.
