If I remember correctly......Shula was a head coach before he got to Miami. So not a great comparison either.
Guessing not, If any coach comes in with a start like Shula, he's in for the long haul. Friendly reminder of the master's work:

That team isn't winning **** with Andy Dalton. Lot of wasted talent and broken hearts in Cincinnati as long as the red rocket is QB'ing that team.

My how we have fallen. I remember when we woud compare the Dolphins with the great teams of the '70s and '80s. Now we are aspiring to compare ourselves to the Bengals.

I'm not willing to wait an entire decade for a coach to get his first playoff win. That's not acceptable.

Question: When did you become a Dolphins fan? Been longer than a decade for me.

Hell, even Ireland has been here for close to a decade...

God please let us aspire to do better than a Marvin Lewis similar HC.

Really? have you seen his defense? Our team can't stop the run or 3rd and long and you wouldn't accept Marvin? I think the problem with Fin fans is they could never be happy unless they are 19-0......Marvin is better than what we got, I would always take what is better, doesn't mean you stop looking.....Marvin gets this team in the playoffs this yr not to mention he does a good job with his players, he has Pacman Jones under control for the first time in his career.....

The reason for there stability is not because they understand what it takes to be successful, its because the ownership is cheap, lets be clear on that but it has worked......

Yr 1 8-8
Yr 2 8-8
Yr 3 11-5
Yr 4 8-8
Yr 5 7-9
Yr 6 4-11-1
Yr 7 10-6
Yr 8 4-12
Yr 9 9-7
Yr 10 10-6
Yr 11 11-5

Playoff record 0-4

That folks is Marvin Lewis' record with Cincinnati. They have a solid team even though most would agree their owner is a dip stick.

Most on this board would have dropped him after those first 2 .500 seasons. His team has dropped to some 4 win seasons but the management has stayed the course. This year they have a solid chance to make a run.

You see building a consistent culture is a process. Oh and Marvin isn't some emotional nut on the sidelines pumping his players up. He's a leader and brings a tremendous knowledge of the game to the table every game and every year.

Winning Super Bowls is freaking hard guys. You don't just buy some free agents have a 2nd year QB and go 14-2 and march thru the playoffs and win the Super Bowl. Great teams are those that year in year out stick to their plan, the players buy in to that system or they can take a hike. Over a period of time if your QB develops you have opportunities to make a run. Even then ITS FOOTBALL AND BAD STUFF HAPPENS.

The patriots went 18-0 only to lose the only game that mattered!!!

Green Bay is great with Rodgers but they've had an off year mainly because of injuries. Doesn't mean fire McCarthy.

John Fox was canned by the Panthers only to catch on with Denver and Peyton f'ing Manning. What do you know he's brilliant.

I believe in Joe and Tannehill. They are the best coach/QB combo this team has had since Marino. It just takes time and maybe more time than anybody including myself likes.

I agree Sherman called some awful plays but his O line was downright awful and the system they REALLY WANT TO RUN CANT BE DONE BECAUSE THE PERSONNEL ISNT QUITE THERE.

Given time like Marvin Lewis, Joe Philbin WILL GET THE MIAMI DOLPHINS IN THE PLAYOFFS WITH A CHANCE TO MAKE IT ALL THE WAY.

It's up to the players to execute, make enough plays, and capitalize on those opportunities. This year they didn't but next year they may

and look at year 3. That is why I say what I say.

You blow it up now, your looking sub 8-8 for at least two years based on system with current players alone.

You know you're in deep **** if you're aspiring to have a coach as great as Marvin Lewis. 5 winning seasons out of 11 is mediocre...certainly nothing impressive. However, the one thing that really stands out is zero playoff wins in all his years there. He's been in Cincy for 10 years (11, but I'm not counting this season since they haven't played their playoff game yet) and doesn't even have one single playoff win. Sorry, but that's absolutely not what I'm looking for. I haven't seen a playoff win in over 10 years...I'd rather it not be another 10 before our next one.

I'm not saying you fire any coach that doesn't immediately right the ship in year one. I do agree that it takes time to turn a franchise around. However, I'm not willing to wait an entire decade for a coach to get his first playoff win. That's not acceptable.

Don't forget he's done it with both hands tied behind his back, they have the smallest scouting dept, they don't pay top dollar for assistants and only get FA on the cheap....it's not easy being the coach of the bengals....I give him credit for not walking out on them giving them the finger, a long time ago....If this guy had the opportunity to coach a real franchise he would be consistently in the playoffs, with the defense he puts together..

Anyone bringing up guys like Bill Walsh are forgetting how much more difficult it was to turn around a franchise back then. There was no such thing as free agency. You truly had to build a team through drafting the right players and coaching them. These days, free agency provides an entirely new avenue for improvement.

True, but even with free agency, there is a salary cap. Its not like you can just replace and entire roster and be Super Bowl champs in two years. Does it happen now and then that a new coach comes in and everything falls into place? Sure, but it is NOT the norm.

If I remember correctly......Shula was a head coach before he got to Miami. So not a great comparison either.

You're right, He was in Baltimore for 7 years, where every year he had a winning season

Ok I'll take my ball.

Why not fire a coach after 1 loss. It's as logical as trying to say Philbin doesn't game plan well when no person outside those walls in Davie knows the stupid game plan.

You guys act like Philbin says gameplan is to snap the ball into fields head while he's not looking. Or to lose a yard on 4th and inches. Or better yet his gameplan is to give up 1 million sacks.

Or he doesn't motivate because he reads off cards. You think you see the entire locker room speech anyway. It's called editing. You think they show the whole thing. Come on.

No coach will ever meet yiur expectations. The first time he doesn't challenge a play that you think he should you'll say yiur gut tells you he's not a good game manager.

If they continue to suck and clearly regress and I mean regress then I'll say can him. But I want to see him succeed. I want Tannehill to succeed.

Players grow into their own and so do coaches (Tom Coughlin is a great example).

This was not supposed to be a Super Bowl year. Playoffs yes and they almost made it.

I actually kind of agree with this. I see a ton of you on here complaining about how bad we are at getting rid of people, and then they go off and find huge success somewhere else.....then are now complaining that we just won't fire everyone. This site is so reactionary it's ridiculous.
We are all so frustrated from what Wannestdat and Sporano put us through we have ZERO patience for anyone to develop.

Would not want. I'd have to wait until season 9 to get a consistent winner? 5 winning seasons of 11. That's a lot of misery, had enough

Not to mention the fact is that they STILL HAVE NOT WON A GODDAMN THING!!!

OP picked an awful example to try to illustrate his point.

Hard knocks was a big mistake in retrospect, I think a lot of people developed their opinion of the staff from watching a reality show edit.
