Tua Contract Details Discussion Thread

Still have to see how Phillips comes back from injury. Its not that bad moving forward cap wise as we do have wiggle room.

Grier opted for bringing in Hill, Chubb, and Ramsey because they were excellent players who would put us on the map NOW... but obviously, this is not a long term plan.

Now, we revert back to a draft heavy team... and that will be helped by the comp picks that we'll be getting... probably for several years in a row.

I'll be honest, I LOVED our draft this year, and I think it'll go a long way towards smoothing our salary cap issues. If Paul becomes our LT next year, and Chop can replace Phillips or Chubb... we're looking really good. ...and my favorite pick is still Wright. Then there's Malik... can he become a starting WR when Hill exits?

There is a path. It's narrow, but it's there.

Last thought... I was outspoken about this last year. I frequently suggested that we'd lose Hunt, AVG, Wilkins and others... and some guys just laughed at that. There was no way that would ever happen...

You called it and you were right... But outside of Hunt, I feel like the Fins have replaced these players at a much lower cost... And might just get equal or better production...?

I am not sure this is right. We will find out this year if we added quality players. Here are some thoughts:
-Not optimistic about the new center. Terrible pass blocker, and pass blocking is the most important thing for Tua
-Wilkins and Rob Hunt were not replaced. Almost nothing in the way of replacement for Hunt, and alot of scrubs to fill in for Wilkins
-Somewhat optimistic about Poyer, but can he stay healthy?
-Didnt have the money to add anyone truly good at edge while we wait on Chubb and Phillips
-Jonnu Smith might be pretty good for us and have a nice role

Anyway I could go on and on....my point was we really dont know yet, but I personally am skeptical about some of the offseason moves. When you lose high quality players due to cap issues, and then go bargain shopping, you tend to not do as well as what you had. You tend to get what you pay for. There is no free lunch. More money for 1 player is less for others. When in this boat, it is not an easy problem to solve for

True. Since we couldn't pay Wilkins. Hunt or Avg . Just because new players we picked up on bargain contracts doesn't necessarily mean they won't be valued players. We ll see as you said.
 
If Chop as well as Paul ( if Armstead misses time) shows up that will be big moving forward.

yup. we will see. i could have said it differently, which is even if they executed well and made the best of a bad situation, you can still end up alot worse off than what you had. it is hard to replace horses with ponies. but this is the spot you end up in when paying certain players alot of money, that is the reality of the cap. like i said, there is no free lunch

I agree. Its really just discussions about what could happen or not. I most certainly don't know. I do see the thought process with this past draft .
 
I think this is as good a deal as anyone here hoped for. Tua will be paid top 3 over the next 3 years while the team has a very easy out after that if they don't want to continue on with him. We all feared a pile of dead money should he get injured again or regress and this solves for that.

Feels an overly gloomy assessment

I wouldn’t call Calais Campbell a scrub.

We’ve also nicely improved at middle linebacker and corner.
 
My only place of concern after all the subtraction and additions this off season is the o line.
