Tua needs to consider retirement...

I can't believe they didn't have any clauses in his contract for this type of thing.

I'm sure Tua's reps refused to include them, BUT THAT WAS A REASON TO NOT EXTEND HIM!!
Should've made him play out his rookie deal. Had he completed two full seasons uninjured, fine, give him a deal, but this was just such an awful deal for many reasons.

If he's medically forced to retire, does all of that count against the cap?? I'm thinking insurance pays out and the team regains its cap space...
Yes and no. I believe there are cap ramifications because it was guaranteed money. That being said, I doubt it would all count against the cap at once either way. At worst they could probably spread the hit out over multiple years.

It was truly a no brainer.

From the FO to the head coach to the fans, they all wanted to believe something was true instead of looking at the situation objectively.

This probably wouldn't be popular with fans, but...

Should he be medically forced to retire, I'd trade the big contracts away, gear up to eat as much of it next season as the team can, load up on draft picks this year and next, and rebuild this team.

I love Tua....the person and player. I wanted for him to be our long term answer, but Im afraid the OP is right. He should not even think twice about retiring. CTE is a real thing and he's going to be seeing ghost soon...

Yup. He's extra prone to concussions and the concussions seem to affect him way worse than the average person/player.

That and we need a new GM
I think you're overacting a bit. Look I don't like the job Grier has done with the offensive line or back up QB either, but I think it's because of McD's school of thought. If you watched the Monday night Game between San Fran and the Jets, they mentioned Shanahan would rather spend on playmakers than OL. He scheme's around that, and that's what McD does also. Grier is just doing what his coach it telling him that he needs as well as managing the cap. I think our offensive problems start with Tua's inability to throw into the window the defense gives him (deep and outside the numbers), our tendency to move away from the run game too quickly, trying to be too cute/flashy, and lastly we are speed based and not power based. Our offensive schemes are almost the same as San Fran with the main difference being that we are speed based, so we have a ton of small frame, light, speed demon playmakers. San Fran on the other hand is power based, so they have taller, larger framed, powerful playmakers.

Y'all really think he's retiring and giving up the money he just signed for?

Be f*cking for real.
He guaranteed 167 million. That generational wealth, I don't think money will be an issue. The real issue will is whether or not he's willing to walk away from his life long identity as a football player and the comradery/brotherhood that lives only within a team.

I'm sure he comes back onto the field this year... but retirement does need to be a serious consideration.

I just hope we as a team can find another franchise qb relatively soon while we have all this talent on the team... this fkn sucks

This isn’t about bashing Tua
He’s done so this thread is dumb, it makes zero sense because there is nothing to consider
You’re an idiot if you think no one cares about Tua the person
Good grief
You seem to be replying to me like I was calling you out specifically. I didn’t quote you so that wasn’t my intent.

It’s not dumb for a group of people who have genuine concern for Tua to discuss this. Of course no one is wishing him ill will, but it’s not dumb for people to process the situation differently than you may choose to.

Realistically none of us know what is next. So let’s not speculate. Let’s just hope he recovers well, regardless of his future in football.

I think you need to get real yourself. I train athletes for a living and this morning Dexter McCluster said to me “I’d take my $ and call it a day if I were him”….. fans need to understand these people are real humans with lives beyond football. Football doesn’t define them like you think so!

This whole thing reminds of the Chris Bosh situation. Different medical condition, different sport but it's just as severe.

It would be irresponsible to let him take the field again.
