The cap goes up every year... So if they tag Tua they can use the new cap money... Also dead cap monies from bad contracts in the past go away... So that frees up money. They can absolutely Tag Tua and afford to pay him.
Excellent point and for several reasons having Tua play 2024 on the 5th year option of his rookie contract, and if the team still wants his services 2025 using the franchise tag, makes good sense.
Remember there are lots of moving pieces here including the status of Mike McDaniel, who may not be the Dolphins coach beyond the 2024 season. So, the organization remaining nimble by avoiding long term contracts could be a very smart strategy.

Coach has been to the playoffs twice in 2 years. He's not going anywhere

Also disagree with stringing out our QB for two years. Pay the man the going rate or find a replacement

Only way Mcdaniel is gone after 2024 is if he quits .

Okay so please tell me what Tua is going to make this current season... If no new deal is made.... I thought it was 23 million... But apparently I am wrong... So please fill me in.

I dunno I trust them when they list Tua's salary at 23 million this year.

Mach, Gryph

Okay here we go...

Digging deep into projections for next year...

They have the Dolphins at 12 million over the cap... not 20... I trust them over Mach... Sorry.

So let's look at the 12 million.

Every single off season there are cap cuts... casualties of the cap. Then there are a handful of players that restructure their contracts to lessen their cap number.

So yeah... We can breakdance it down this way if you want. I will reword it and show easily that they can tag Tua and pay for it.

Tons of ways to get there to pay Tua

Cutting Armstead saves 4 million... If he retires... 18 million. One player and boom we are practically there to paying for Tua under the tag.

It would be easy to tag Tua.

you want me to update the math and show examples of massive savings... fine by me.

You are right about only being over by 10m. My bad. I was going by memory. It is irrelevant anyway, as I didn't say it was impossible. In fact, if you reread what I posted, I said it was possible

What I said was that in your calculation that you can't subtract 23m from the franchise number to get the amount of cap space needed, and you can't. His freaking 23m is not reflected is the 2025 projection.

Stop being purposely thick and stop conflating what I said with what others say. Tua is NOT listed on the very Spotrac link you posted, therefore his salary is not included. Period. End of discussion His entire potential Tag number would need to be added.

"Boom", even if Armstead retires, which is not an assumption I would count on, or plan around, you are not "practically there". You also have to field a team. We have many guys who are on the last year under contract. Whether we resign them or replace them you have to use cap space to do it.

You can't look at potentially tagging Tua in a vacuum. Could you gut the roster, rework contracts pushing cap charges down the road? Probably, but would it be a realistically viable plan? Not really.

You’re crazy if you think MM status is up in the air, for obvious reasons.

I'm going to go a step further in analyzing your position.

You don't really want to franchise Tua either. You're just advocating for delaying a new contract, hoping he fails, because you prefer to get rid of him and replace him with a different QB.

That's fine if that's your opinion, but at least be honest and say that.

See, I can get to a place where someone is of the opinion that letting Tua play out the option year without an extension is best. I understand the logic there. We are committed to his fully guaranteed salary for this season regardless.

Franchise tag? I can't get there. It makes no sense, either financially or otherwise unless one just doesn't like and believe in Tua. And if that's the case, one should have enough conviction in their beliefs to just say that.

Tell me where I'm wrong.
