So does signing him. The only difference is how the cap hit can be manipulated, or not.
his cap figure in 2025 would be significantly less than that, adding this year and a tag next year would be a total of $65 million that cannot be manipulated

This should be a sticky post for anyone contemplating starting yet another Tua contract topic.

Like a check box one has to tick to show they read and understand this point before proceeding.
Why? Do you believe he would sign a contract for less?

But they wouldn’t be downgrading. They’ll be forcing him to play this year on his current deal, and then they can keep him for another 3 years after this season whether he likes it or not should they choose to.

They could also always use the non-exclusive tag on him and let some other team determine his worth and then decide if they want to exercise their right to match the offer or let him go. The Dolphins have a lot of options should they decide to use them.
He could decide the risk is to great to play with no future contract and sit out . I would hope he wouldn`t do that myself but some on here seem to think that`s what he`ll do

You realize tagging him would cost around $42 million?
year 2 is 120% of that and year 3 is 144% of that
Yes, I realize all of that. I’m very aware of how it works.

It’s also a way of the Dolphins trying to pressure Tua by saying, “we are going to keep tagging you if you don’t sign a long term deal at our price and you’ll be putting your future earnings at risk if you get injured”.

It didn’t work out well for Washington when they did it with Cousins, but it’s not an unheard of approach.

I was responding to what I bolded.

Well I work on the assumption that he leads the league in passing again. Next thing you know we are back trying to sign him to a long term deal except now the "market value" has gone up another 10-15 a year.

He proved he could stay healthy last year. Ok I put part of that being down to Jessie Davis not being around. 😂

I'm not talking about the "cap #". I'm talking about actual cost. Just because you defer the money until a later year doesn't mean it's less.

There is a small advantage to the team as far as cap % due to an increasing cap, but it isn't enough to make or break a potential deal.

a very dumb one but , yes, an option
Maybe, but no more dumb than paying a guy what he’s asking for if you don’t believe is worth the money he’s asking for. Obviously I have no idea if that’s how the Dolphins feel.

Right, which was this, “Tua needs the Dolphins more than the Dolphins need Tua”. I was pointing out some of the reasons why I don’t believe that’s correct. Though I was thinking in terms of negotiation leverage and I now see you meant solely in terms of the position of QB itself.

I don’t think most people in this thread (aside from a few people who really seem to have lost the plot) who are OK with letting him play out this season unsigned want to move on from Tua or are taking him for granted. We’re simply not bothered with the idea of letting it play out that way if that’s what the organization decides to do.

I took that quoted part as them saying that it would not be bad if the phins 'lost' Tua. Whether they just decided to move on, or if Tua feels disrespected and decides himself that he won't sign/play for the phins.
In my book, those things aren't likely, but I think the person I quoted does think those are possibilities.
