Vernon Carey is our best offensive lineman, right now.

Nice writeup CK.I made the same observation about Gordon.Just like last year he seems to have trouble picking the right holes and he takes a lot of extra steps to find one.

BTW Hysterkill,Alabi has been switched to RT.

In case you were wondering who graded out as our worst linemen among the starters, it was Jeno James and John St. Clair. They got manhandled in general, failing grades like every other play. Jeno was slightly worst than John. I know Jeno was shaking off that dehydration thing a little still, but really the guy was letting DTs blast right up the middle on run plays and pass plays. That's just not acceptable. And Stockar McDougle really did have some struggles against Ogunleye...which just showed me that hey, Ogun really IS pretty good lol.

We have to grade Jeno after this year, and if he still hasn't played as consistently as he was supposed to, we have to drop him. I'm totally not impressed with him on the field so far. His enthusiasm has always been refreshing, but I think people have been giving him a little bit of a free pass over the past year and a half, because he's our highest paid OL. He makes a lot more money over the next 3 years of his 5 year deal, and it has to be questioned whether he's performed up to that figure.

Agreed, he has been very average. If his contract does take a huge up swing then you have got to ditch him next year.

That is the exact same starting line I see. Other then Middleton, that is an O-Line for many years.

Assuming Carey does well, then we can pick up a center next year, nice job CK.

6th rd steal that has done what in the NFL? Let's see him play a few more games before you annoint him as a steal.

I'll match up Bennie Anderson/ChrisVillarrial against Jeno James/John St Clair ANY TIME.

I'll match up Mike Williams/Mike Gandy vs any tandem y'all can scrap together at T

I'll take Teague at C over anyone y'all have.

Right now, no OL on your roster would be a starter in Buffalo, only depth and that includes Jeno James

Mike Gandy. ahahahahaha!!!

Just to be clear, I am not saying that Carey was the one-eyed man in the land of the blind here. I'm saying that Carey played really, really WELL. I thought the Urlacher sack was actually a testament to Carey. He was beat to the outside on a 7 step drop (which is bad, because the QB is dropping so far back that if the DE beats you outside he's on almost a straight line to the QB) but he recovered quickly enough that all Brown was able to do was get a hand on Feeley's bicep and nothing more. On that play if you take a look, Ogun was giving McDougle a fit on the other side and both DTs were being ridden to the side so basically if Urlacher hadn't come up, the middle would have been wide open for probably a 15 yard QB scramble. That's why I say Feeley should have seen Urlacher coming.

At least that monday night, Carey was good, very good. It was James and St. Clair that struggled, run or pass, and Stockar had some trouble with Ogunleye.

Umm, no.

Mike Williams and Gandy over Carey and McDougle? Not even close.

Mike Williams is an unmitigated BUST, and a terrible pass protector for even a RT. He's never started a full season, and averages more then a half a sack a game. Williams has never given up less then 7 sacks in a season(And that's only playing 14 games), while McDougle has never given up more then 4 sacks in a season.

Gandy isnt a starting quality LT. He's a Guard. Carey hasnt proven a whole hell of alot, but he isnt nearly the run blocker Carey is, and certainly couldnt hold his own vs. Taylor in practice.

Villarial is better then both of current guards, but Anderson? Uh, no. He's a run blocker and that is it. I wouldnt be comfortable asking him to protect my snickers bar from the furious pass rush of a sugar-crazed 5 year old.

Teague wins out by virtue of having more experience at this point.

Totally agree. The other big issue is that the Bills have almost no experienced reserves. The only guarantee is that someone wll get hurt eventually. The Bills backups include a journeyman (Tucker) and that's it.

The Fins meanwhile have whoever remains from the group of McIntosh, St Clair, McKinney, Cook, and Whitley. McIntosh can backup both tackles, St Clair can play multiple positions, McKinney can back up center and guard.

The only thing funnier than Mike Gandy as their starting LT is Jason Peters as their backup.

I'm not interested in critiquing individual plays one after another. I tried that years ago when evaluating entire OLs or DLs and discovered it always led me to a more positive analysis than the group warranted as a whole. Via that method every play you assume apologist mode unless every guy was trampled backward onto his rump.

As a group our OL lacks sufficient feet, explosion and athletic ability. That's the base summation when you watch the unit over several series. That will not change until further significant personnel changes are made. We can just hope some of them are already on the roster, like Alabi. My ultra safe prediction: tonight the starting OL will look poor again. By tomorrow or Monday there will be similar threads saying they weren't as bad as they looked, after you break down everything player by player, play after play. A ridiculous revolving door.

Carey does not play like a LT. His upper body positions are improper for the position and he does not set up quickly enough to survive the outside rush from a premier RDE. This is level one, early preseason, and the regular season opener will progress to level six or higher, on a scale of 10 being Super Bowl intensity. I don't like Carey's chances unless he's moved inside.

Lamar Gordon can't play. Your assessment was astute and, if anything, understated. He has decent running instincts on straight ahead inside plays. Other than that, he looks more like a journeyman free agent who should be relegated to special teams than someone any team could donate a #3 for.

I thought only Texans and other people in the south used that word.

Bill Player's Summary:
Mike Williams - Bust
Gandy - Crap
Villarial - Overpaid Crap
Anderson- Old Crap
Teague - Average

Mcdougal more than likely is a short term fix. Jeno is just a run stuffer and this looks like a very average line at best. IMO
