I'm not Dennis Hickey. This isn't exactly how I would draft but a prediction of how I think Hickey will. I think Zack Martin is a future all pro guard, so I don't see him as solid. Also I see Ja'Wuan James as a potential top 10 RT under Benton. I would take Shazier if Miami would have been able to land another starting lineman in free agency. Fleming is not a fit in the ZBS. I see Turner of a fit at guard and he is nowhere near ready to be a starter. I would have signed 4 starters the OL in free agency and draft Shazier and Moncrief with the first 2 picks. But Miami needs another guard and right tackle desperately. Martin and James are perfect fits for this offense and are plug and play guys. High character and 101 starts between them at big schools. I'll take that in a heartbeat over a D2 guard.
I agree with your take on FA. I would have put more priority on signing a RT. I think Fleming can play in a ZBS. He's efficient with his movements and has good awareness. That we're not looking at Zach Martin at OT (which I like) and that we are looking at Kouandjio (which I'm OK with anytime after 50), makes me think Fleming would suit our needs at RT just fine. If you can land Fleming and Trai Turner in RD's 3 and 4, I think you've done great (given failing to land a starting RT in FA).
I'm not willing to give up future value - especially in the 1st 2 RD's - out of desperation. I equate that to opening a new credit account to pay off debt. Most of this comes down to our disagreement on Martin. I'd take Jackson or Su'a-Filo at LG over Martin. I've seen each do it well, and I'm not looking at them at 19. To be a top-20 OG in this class, you need high-end tools (Jonathan Cooper, Mike Iupati, Mike Pouncey), and I don't see anything special with Martin, and he'll have to change positions. To me, he makes no sense for us at 19. If you're picking in the top 20, draft a player who excelled at something similar to what you'll ask him to do in the NFL. This is how we ****ed ourselves with Dion Jordan. If you draft Ryan Shazier, you're going to ask him to do more or less what he did at Ohio State, and our 4-3 WLB left a lot of plays on the field last season. If you draft Marqise Lee, you're going to ask him to play the same position he did at USC, and our offense is lacking a high-end RAC player.
Because we failed to address RT in FA, we do have to address it with a need-based pick in the first three rounds. I don't think we have to address LG in the first three rounds.
