Was it really...

If Shula had enticed Arnsbarger to stay on instead of letting him go to LSU, Marino would have 10 rings.

Amen!!!!!!!!

All anyone has to do is look at the Dolphin defenses between 1970 and 1983.

Bill Arnsparger had two separate stints as defensive coordinator with the Dolphins, the first from 1970-73. He left in 1974 to take the head coaching post with the New York Giants. He re-joined the Dolphins midway through the 1976 season and stayed there until being named the head coach at Louisiana State University in 1984.

Amsparger's defenses ranked first or second in the NFL in nine of his 11 full seasons with the Dolphins, including his final one of 1983, when Miami yielded a league-low 15.6 points per game.

A Marino led offense with an Arnparger led defense would have been good for many SBs.

Just my opinion, but the reason Marino didn't win a SB was because of a coach and Don Shulas lack of desire to get rid of him. Tom Olividatti's defensive philosophy was the biggest joke I'd ever seen. Probably the laughing stock of the league. I feel Olividatti caused Marino not to get a ring and in turn it was Shulas fault for not letting him go and showing too much loyalty to bad defensive coach. There were several years that we had some good players, but the philosophy was a joke. This is not exactly on the thread patern. But i thought of it anyway so I typed it.

I'd count Olividatti as a good reason it never happened. I'd also say a ref may have cost us one time....

The '94 Chargers playoffloss. Yeah, I know Stoyo shanked the game winning field goal chance, but I vaguely remember a loose ball recovered in the 4th quarter near the Fins goal line. The refs, called it a recovery on the 1 foot line but the ball touched the pylon so it should have been a touchback, ball on the 20. Instead this call on the 1 foot line lead to a safety which put our D on the field again for another long drive. They never recovered and the Chargers went on to beat Pittsburgh on an uncharacteristically mild day in Pitt. We could have done that, and who knows? Maybe we could have beaten SF in teh SB. They were awesome and trashed the Chargers, but that's partly because the Chargers were undeserving to be there in the first place.

This memory is foggy now so I may have the fine details off, but something like that happened, leading to the safety, the worn out defense and the Chargers on to beat Pitt on a warm day. We coulda had that warm day in Pitt! I remember the commentators talking about the call on the pylon too.

I posted this in the VIP and got great responses to it, and felt that everyone on the board could have some insightful thoughts on the subject too, so here we go:

When Marino was playing and even there after he was done playing, people always said, "Marino never got a ring because he had no runningback to compliment his passing game." Was that really true? I ask because when Fiedler was here, he was an average QB and we did having a running, but got no ring or anywhere close to it.

So what has it been that has stopped us from getting to the promise land again? I personally think it was a combo of positions on the team(including coaching staff). I mean, we had a superstar QB that everyone loved and we couldn't gameplan around him, he had to be the gameplan(marino), we had a superstar RB that everyone wanted to see crush the other team's defence, and he was our gameplan(Ricky), we had superstar WRs(Irving, O.J., etc...), and so on. But Nick Saban seems to be taking the play of the Patriots by not going out and paying for highpriced superstars, instead, he is gathering a group of players that are out to prove something, players that compliment eachother at their positions, overall not great, but good enough to be starters....that way we don't have one player being the star of the team, but having a group of stars instead.

Your thoughts?

 great post!

marino never won cause the defense gave up over 30 pts a game in marino's prime and in the 3 playoff losses to buffalo they gave up 44,37,29 those were 3 of marino's best chance to get to the sb especially in 92 in the championship game i remember that bills kicked 5 fg's and the team played like garbage after winning the div and getting homefield advantage and blowing the chargers out 31-0. Marino played well but all the wr's dropping balls tipping them and getting them intercepted sad day i was for sure we would have met the cowboys in the sb that year. i belive if marino would have had a decent run game and a solid defense he would have won a few sb.marinos run game was ranked in top 10 or 15 what 1 time in his career and the defense was better towards the end in his last 3 seasons but by then injuries had started to effect his play so during his prime no run game no d and the o-line also broke down that was once solid early in his career.Shula was the best coach i know but if remember correctly the dolphins were never a team that would spend money freely on players like dallas and sf did before free agency also take that into account when it was almost like the team with the most money can buy out the best players. Marino did the best by far for what he had to play with and he was always a good sport about it never singled anyone out in the media he just went and played.( just on the field when they ran the wrong route lol)

If Dan had the running game of Denver and Davis, he would have won Super Bowls instead of Elway.

Elway did not win one until then either.

My opinion is still the running backs and running game severly hampered Dan.
