I agree with the thought about having stars at QB for a time and then RB. I just look at the best teams of the last 20 some years. San Fran had Montana, Rice, and even Craig, then it was Young, Watters, and Rice, then in Dallas you had Smith, Aikman, and Irvin. Denver had Elway, Smith, and Davis. Plus they all had great defenses in the years that they won. We had Marino and the Marks and no D and No runner. This hurt us because we were one dimensional. Then we had a great d and Ricky but no Qb. QB is the most important player on the field and that hurt us because when it came time to "get paid" Fieldler would screw it up. Defense can win with a efficient offense. Doesn't mean it has to be great but efficient we did not have a efficient offense, teams would stack the line and make fieldler beat them, this never could happen.

Marino was screw by his defenses over the years. The other team would put up so many points that he felt the pressure everytime he touched the field. "He was hurt by his own success", I agree but when your defense lets other teams, the Bills, score at will on you, what is he suppose to do? Pass up the 40 yard touchdown because his D is Tired. As much as they may have been tired from Marino leading quick drives, they also sucked. They gave up tons of big throws and running plays every game. I don't think they were on the field long enough to get tired. 3 plays and the other team had scored. Then Marino would come out and score as quickly as he could to even the score. he hated to trail.

I posted this in the VIP and got great responses to it, and felt that everyone on the board could have some insightful thoughts on the subject too, so here we go:

When Marino was playing and even there after he was done playing, people always said, "Marino never got a ring because he had no runningback to compliment his passing game." Was that really true? I ask because when Fiedler was here, he was an average QB and we did having a running, but got no ring or anywhere close to it.

So what has it been that has stopped us from getting to the promise land again? I personally think it was a combo of positions on the team(including coaching staff). I mean, we had a superstar QB that everyone loved and we couldn't gameplan around him, he had to be the gameplan(marino), we had a superstar RB that everyone wanted to see crush the other team's defence, and he was our gameplan(Ricky), we had superstar WRs(Irving, O.J., etc...), and so on. But Nick Saban seems to be taking the play of the Patriots by not going out and paying for highpriced superstars, instead, he is gathering a group of players that are out to prove something, players that compliment eachother at their positions, overall not great, but good enough to be starters....that way we don't have one player being the star of the team, but having a group of stars instead.

To make it to the SB and win, everything has to go your way along with the right combination of players and coaches. (meaning you have to have some plain dumb luck as well as talent). Probably Marino's curse was that he made mediocre teams look and play much better than they really were, talent wise. He was personally responsible for at least 2-3 wins every year, maybe more...Very few players have that effect on their teams...Elway, Favre, Unitas are the only recent guys that come to mind for me. As great a coach as Shues was, he could never really assemble the right combination of players to get beyond the championship game. Early in Marino's career, he had a good offensive weaponry, but no running game and that was our downfall. Later in his career and at various times, we had the running backs, but not the OL, then we couldn't get the WR tandem we needed for Marino. And JJ probably had some dumb bad luck with injuries...Yatil Green comes to mind right off...but the bottom line is that football is the epitomy of a "team" sport and you need 53 parts at their best to be the best in the NFL each year.

you guys are taking this VIP thing way too personal and to heart....if you can't get it, save for it, if you don't want to pay for it, then stop bringing it up.

You misunderstand. No one is upset they don't have access to the VIP forums. People are upset that people from the VIP forums throw it in our faces that we don't have access. As if we haven't noticed we don't already.

I expect nothing for free, and am happy with what I have. But is it really needed for people to throw it in my face they have more? BTW I am not implying in this thread you did that. But you have previously, and you are fully aware of that. You have allowed me to view a charateristic of you I do not like, and probably will never get over (whether it is truly is one or not). First impressions determine alot. Alot of people would agree with me on this as well. So it is not like I am alone on this.

So do you feel if Shula would have have called it quits and retired in the early/mid 90s, and a coach that took no BS from his coaching staff and made sure they knew what they were doing, that Marino would have stood a better chance at the promised land?

Well, not so much if Shula would have retired. It was more being TOO loyal to coordinators that just weren't getting it done. He let guys hang around that weren't getting the job done. He let friendship stand in the way of his better judgement. That's just my opinion.

I agree in a sense. But look at Billy B. He rarely offers coaches outside of his system positions. He would rather move smaller coaches up the ranks. The advantage to knowing your coaches is you know they agree withyour system. You don't need to worry about suggestions and ideas that oppose your system. You also do not need to reteach it.

I know what you are saying. And I can agree with that to an extent. But it was known, LEAGUE WIDE, that Tom Olividatti was the biggest joke of a defensive coordinator there was in the league. Possibly THE biggest joke of one to ever carry that title.

Just my opinion, but the reason Marino didn't win a SB was because of a coach and Don Shulas lack of desire to get rid of him. Tom Olividatti's defensive philosophy was the biggest joke I'd ever seen. Probably the laughing stock of the league. I feel Olividatti caused Marino not to get a ring and in turn it was Shulas fault for not letting him go and showing too much loyalty to bad defensive coach. There were several years that we had some good players, but the philosophy was a joke. This is not exactly on the thread patern. But i thought of it anyway so I typed it.

I agree 100% with this, and have always said, even without a running game, with Marino, all Miami needed was at least a solid defense.....shame he never had a good defense, except for 84, when he went to the superbowl with the 2nd best record in the NFL.:mad:
