There was a strong belief that post Tony Sparano, Joe Philbin was a Stpehen Ross hiring, while GM Jeff Ireland wanted Mike McCoy.

Let me just say I soured on Jeff Ireland as soon as he traded up for Jordan, but in hindsight take a look at the roster Philbin inherited :-

QB - Matt Moore
RB - Reggie Bush
FB - Charles Clay
WR - Brandon Marshall, Brian Hartline, Devone Bess
TE - Anthony Fasano
OL - Jake Long, Richie Incognito, Mike Pouncey, John Jerry, Nate Garner

DL - Starks, Soliai, Odrick, McDaniel
OLB - Cameron Wake, Koa Misi
MLB - Karlos Dansby, Kevin Burnett
CB - Sean Smith, V Davis, Nolan Carroll, Jimmy Wilson
S - Chris Clemons, Reshad Jones

This is before any draft or FA signings.

Due to the hiring of Philbin and consequently Sherman & Coyle, there was a massive overhaul. Lighter offensive lineman, switch to 4-3 D and an off zone scheme. This left most of our OL redundant and the eventual departures of both CB's Davis & Smith.

Now consider McCoy. He has one of the heaviest OL in all of the NFL and has stuck with a 3-4 press corner D.

He has gotten the best out of Philip Rivers, made Kyle Orton look very good and even had Tim Tebow functional as an NFL QB.

As I said im not defending JI, but when you look at this roster, before any FA signings or draft pick and then consider someone like McCoy in charge, you have to wonder whether JI have been fired and would we be in a better position?

Seems like a big miss so far. Although I'd rather have this offense than the previous versions we had. I've wanted the zone blocking scheme in Miami forever now. The defense seems like it would be better as a 3-4 but we're a pretty darn good 4-3 though so who knows.

I need to see the Chargers play at a high level for most of the season and see Philbin have us around .500 again before I feel sure that we missed out.

I think the Chargers will go to the SB in next 3 years. I love the way they draft and think Telesco is one of the best GM's about.

In first year he hired McCoy, signed Danny Woodhead and brought in backups who became starters in Rhinehart and King Dunlop, then drafted DJ Fluker, Manti Teo & Kennan Allen.

He has already drafted two impact players in Verrett and Attaochu this year

No.

Drew Brees is a top 3 quarterback. He's one of the best of all time. I don't even know if Mike McCoy is a top 5 coach right now.

He's not a top 5 coach right now but he is good enough to have that team in the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 yrs and think how RT would have developed under a guy like this....Brees is huge but Brees on a bull**** team could be a short career.....

I think how much a head coach plays in the success of a team is always a little overblown IMO. I do believe there are good and bad coaches, but if Philbin had Phillip Rivers, I'm sure he would've been more successful than he has been.

No one missed on Drew Brees. Look, the guy just came off major surgery to his shoulder, which left all kinds of questions unanswered. No one would guess it would give him a stronger arm. If anything the odd were that he'd be weaker and out of the league. The miss was in signing Culpepper. NO made a big wager on Brees and it paid off.

remind me again what has McCoy done to even say that.

How much does Phillip Rives factor into a coaches success? I wanted McCoy over Philbin, but comparing them based on the teams the have really isn't fair.

Having Phillip Rivers is up there with having a Dan Marino in his prime fall into your lap. McKoy had the second ranked offense and still couldn't control his own destiny and had to rely on our team to **** the bed. And even then he needed a bad call from the refs in OT to beat KC's scrubs. Rivers gives him a great opportunity to win the SB, Rivers alone makes that Chargers team the second or third best team in the AFC this season, I don't know if McKoy is good or bad, and it wouldn't surprise me if he wins the SB in the next few years, but he's still not on the same stratosphere as Drew Brees (or Aaron Rodgers).

mccoys rescued philip rivers i will give him that...rivers was playing pretty bad ball situationally under norv turner...tons of red zone turnovers etc...as rivers goes so does that team

QB - 0 teams offered Matt Moore their starting QB position. I take Ryan Tannehill over him.
RB - letting Reggie Bush leave in free agency might be Philbin's/Ireland's biggest mistake with regards to personnel
TE - it remains to be seen if Charles Clay is the TE we all hope for
WR - I'd love to have Brandon Marshall on this team; Brian Hartline is a back-to-back 1.000 yard receiver because of Ryan Tannehill; Davone Bess is out of the league
OL - Jake Long is done; so is Incognito; Pouncey is a good player, not a great one yet; Jerry and Garner are mediocre
DL - I like Starks and Odrick, don't think we miss Soliai or McDaniel much
OLB - I like both Wake and Misi
MLB - Dansby had a great season after he left but he's done; Burnett is neither upgrade nor downgrade to Ellerbe/Wheeler
CB - Smith and Davis had potential but they have not developed; Caroll is mediocre and Wilson isn't a world beater either
S - Clemons is currently unemployed and we'll see this season if Jones can return to his 2012 form

If you look at that roster, there's a reason those guys went 0-7 before winning 6 of 9. This is a typical 6-10 roster. No true superstars but lots of holes. The 2014 Dolphins is a much better team talent wise. They just have to play to their potential.

Also, if you give McCoy credit for doing what he did I with Orton, Tebow and Rivers, you have to give Philbin credit for what he has done with Aaron Rodgers.

brees did go to a bull**** team and what did he do? He changed the culture in NWO instantly and made them the team they are. Saban taking brees has to be the biggest fail in dolphin history with cam Cameron being second
