Was missing on Mike McCoy as big as missing on Drew Brees?

Coaches make players look good, players make coaches look great.

McCoy hasn't done anything as a coach yet.

You think Belichick is the coach of the Patriots this long if they don't luck into Tom Brady panning out?

I agree rivers is outstanding but as stated, he was on a downward turn before McCoy took over. Also just look at the SD roster. IMO we have far better players.

My opinion isn't just based on the records if both coaches now, it's that MCCoy would have fitted the players we had 2012 far better than Philbin. We had a massive roster overhaul because if Philbin, where McCoy wouldn't have had to.

Which to me is evidence of how awful Norv Turner was rather than how great McKoy is.

Mike Mccoy went into one of the best QB situations in the league.

Its almost like saying did we miss out of John Fox? No, we missed out on getting manning.

Not saying Mccoy is not a good HC but most coaches will look good when there QB situations are set for them.

Actually, we had two opportunities to get Drew Brees. Dave Wannstedt drafted Jamar F Fletcher in the 1st round when Brees was available. But that was back in the Wanny era when it was all about the Defense and you didn't need to draft a decent QB when you had Jay Fiedler. It's pretty laughable now, but that was the M.O. of the time.
There have been many big mistakes over many years, but there is nothing gained from whipping, beating and frothing at the mouth re-living the errors made a long time ago. People made objective assessments and got it wrong.
I don't know if McCoy was that much better than Philbin when the decision was made in 2012. Probably, but our owner, Stephen Ross is a self made billionaire because he has had the confidence to make many great decisions throughout his life and has had phenomenal success that most of us can't comprehend. Mr Ross began his career as a tax attorney in Detroit and is now the biggest real estate developer in New York City.
Life is about making key decisions and moving forward, not dwelling on mistakes in the past.

Shouldn't we wait until McCoy has actually accomplished something to say this?

I think your wrong about norv turner. For all his faults as a HC he has been one if the best OC.

I think you have to judge a HC on the players he has available and IMO if you look at their roster he is getting the best out of them and that's what matters. IMO Philbin is not.

IMO if we had chosen McCoy, Ireland would have remained and we would be running away with this division

Yes, thats what I'm saying Turner was a terrible head coach.

As for McKoy if it ever comes out that he would have taken Russell Wilson in the second or third round that year then I would agree, we'd be running away with the division and that decision was just as bad as passing on Brees. But if he wanted Tannehill or Weeden then I doubt we'd be any better off, and probably a lot worse off with Weeden.

And that's exactly why you should take this unattainable hypothetical scenario and lite it on fire.

If the coaches were even then McCoy wins just based on not overhauling the roster like Philbin made Ireland do. Those draft picks used to overhaul the roster the past 3 years could have instead been used to beef up the roster instead which would be huge. To still have Marshall, Bush, Davis and many others we moved out still on the team would have put us in the playoffs. But Ross got his man over Irelands advice and many others on this site so here we are. Whats even more disturbing IMO in the offseason no one in the league want the highly coveted GM job in Miami which means something is very stinking in Dolphin land. The word got around very quickly that taking a job under with Ross or Aponte was a death sentence in the NFL which is why everyone avoided it.

1. Taking the advice from either of these two would show immense incompetency.

2. Truly clueless statement.

Phintim I agree. It's not just about McCoy being a better HC. It's also about the roster overhaul and the inevitable 'starting again' or 'building a roster' etc. If you look at that roster, it is far better than SD man for man right now bar Rivers. But when you consider many were down on Rivers before McCoy took over and that roster does not include one FA signing or draft pick from that year, you have to realise that it was a massive miss.

No it is way to early to say Mccoy is a out of this world awesome coach but to be fair he has looked great so far
