Watson was 4 settlements away from becoming a Dolphin. Interesting Quick read...

And those that wanted him here couldn't understand those of us who wanted no part of him even if he didn't get indicted and all the civil suits were settled. Because he's a horrible human being regardless.

You can believe that a professional sports organization with the world's best minds in the field would piss away $200 million dollars without doing their due diligence. I refuse to believe that. in fact, has it ever happened before in the history of sports? I will bet you a donation to this site that if the Watson situation goes sideways the Browns are not on the hook for his guaranteed money.
Happy to agree to disagree. But FYI: Andrew Brandt said on the Pat McAfee show today that he’s heard from multiple well-placed sources there’s no clause in the contract that gives the Browns an out.

I believe he said first two years are fully guaranteed no matter what. Later years could be voided if Watson re-offends after the date of signing. But that doesn’t get them off the hook if new allegations come to light that are alleged to have taken place before he signed the contract (ie: like the 24th lawsuit).

I think I read something on PFT that the 24th lawsuit might give them the out but I'm not certain.

One thing I will say is that there is no getting the draft picks back whether the contract can be voided or not. If Watson ends up not being able to play for more than a year or not at all for the Browns, AND they are forced to eat that contract, everyone in their F.O. should be immediately fired and the owner should sell the team.

Normally I'm super critical of Florio and think he's nothing but a click-bait artist, but when it comes to legal/contract stuff, his background as a lawyer actually gives him some decent insight. It's one of the few times I consider it worthwhile to listen to him.

It's going to be fascinating watching this whole situation play out. Let's just thank our lucky stars we can watch from the sidelines and that Miami didn't pay an astronomical price to take this problem off the Houston Texans hands.

This is the nuclear winter i was concerned about with trading for the guy.
The precedent was previously set with Ezekiel Elliot's suspension.
If Ezekiel Elliot can get 6 games for allegations that were less than credible, how can the NFL can get around dropping a hammer on Watson with these type of allegations is beyond me.

If anyone actually thinks the Browns did not do an incredibly extensive amount of private investigation into this situation they are kidding themselves. I would imagine they think they know more than anyone else about Watson's situation. So, either this is egregious negligence on the part of the Browns, or they are prepared for whatever decision is looming for Watson and felt the risk was worth it.
They made a bad bet, its that simple... Happens to everyone.

There are different things and different bet sizes you could bet on when it comes to Watson. The Browns just happened to bet the most on the least likely outcome... They flat out went all in on the possibility that Watson has done absolutely nothing wrong and this is all a big scam, which is backed up by the introductory press conference in which Watson states he has done absolutely nothing wrong and has no regrets whatsoever. Its actually an atrocious bet on 2nd thought.

The Fins bet was quite different from a strictly gambling perspective, Im saying the Fins because its kind of hard to really hone in on who was really pounding the table for this though in the end Ross is responsible. Allegedly, Ross wanted Watson to settle all the cases and include NDA's in all cases before committing to a bet. He wasnt betting on innocent Watson, but he was willing to bet on a guilty Watson with admission of guilt and probably some kind of "I made alot of mistakes in my life, I will work on myself to be a better man blah, blah, blah ... ".

Both these guys lack moral ground on this, Im not arguing otherwise, but the Fins bet had much better odds of success although we have no idea what the bet size would've been. Like @j-off stated, it was a desperation bet driven by wishful thinking more than anything... I mean if you fail to get any kind of output from any of the plaintiffs, you've botched the process.

It doesn't take much as fans to get a grip on this. We all want to win...

Where the problems lie is would any of you really want this POS being the face of our franchise?

We truly dodged a bullet. Really looking like the Browns gave up a shitload of draft picks for absolutely nothing

People tend to believe what they want to believe. They asked Watson. He lied. They investigated to some extent and they missed stuff. But really, when it was 23 potential suits that's not really much different than 66 at least in terms of realizing that this guy was a problem you should avoid. There was always going to be either more suits like we're seeing now or more incidents down the line. Either way it was freaking obvious then, but despite that how many people here still wanted him?

Only so much investigation they could've done. Ultimately Watson lied - and he'll likely have a bunch of his guaranteed taken (if not all), but I imagine those draft picks are longggg gone. And as they should be - they had no business bailing the Texans out of the mess they seemingly helped create. I have no sympathy but Im just a bitter attorney

The 24th suit is so vile, it's questionable when if ever Watson will be allowed to play. And it seems like the talking heads are now galvanizing against him. Thank heavens it's Cleveland's problem, not ours!

yup, just can't see how it could all be golddigging. I mean, if you are #24 and just gold digging, you'd likely go after someone that does not have a line of 23 others in front of you working on bankrupting the guy.
