We should only carry two QB's

The way his contract was structured I still can't believe Moore was ever in the plans for year two. This may be a crazy theory with no basis in reality but it made perfect sense to me that we would try to trade Moore if the opportunity presented itself last year before the deadline. It was a win-win for Moore and us, Moore was guaranteed to go to a team that needed a starter and we would get some compensation for him. If that wasn't the plan then we should make it the plan and restructure right now, and promise Moore that we'll trade him if a team needs a starter.

If you're reading this Hickey: DO IT!! Its ****ing brilliant (even if I have to say so myself).

With the number of FA vets that are willing to take pocket change to play versus Moore on a $5.5 bill (and minimal skill difference) I doubt this teams gets anything but a conditional 7th or some crap for Moore.

Teams would likely rather trade for a young up and coming QB sitting on the bench. (Ryan Mallet type, etc)

the problem is no one views matt moore as a starter...can't say i blame them either...he's not

Right now I would agree. But into the season if Luck goes down week 2 and they need a stop gap for a few games they might be willing to pony up for a QB like Moore. And if Moore goes undefeated during his chance to start he may become viable again. Win-win.

you seem like a guy smart enough to understand that if qb1 goes down for any extended period of time this teams done anyways

I agree Moore does not bring the same skill set to this team as RT. But I do believe Moore can give us a winning chance in any game he starts. He has proven as much.

But if it is Week 8 and RT goes down for the rest of the year, I would hate to think we just forfeited the next 8 games. And I would like to think .500 to close out the year could protect a playoff birth if RT has us + .500 pre-injury.

I'm always thinking about playoffs hopes.

EDIT: I also, as of this offseason, believe Moore's value to this team has hit it's ceiling at the conclusion of this year. His obvious role, backup starter, has always been supplemented by his value as an on field mentor and sounding board for RT. At the conclusion of this year, RT should not be needing mentoring and tutelage as he has in his first 3 years.

Moore's value becomes diminished to backup starter. A role, we hope, Devlin has either cemented or floundered. I suspect will we see at least 1, maybe 2 new QBs on next years roster.

May become viable again? Ha! When was he viable. Another Dolphins Treasure who would not even be a 3rd QB on any other team in this League.

I don't disagree but I'm sure Moore views himself as good enough to be a starter and he would love nothing more than one more chance to try and prove it.

Matt Moore is an excellent back up QB that has been a great mentor to RT. If Moore had to start a few games for Miami, I would have just as much confidence if not more that the team would win those games even though RT was not under center.

Miami should carry two QB's.

Im not so sure man. Did you see on Hard Knocks when they told Tannehill he would be the starter, and Moore just rolled over, smile on his face. He's a nice Dude, I get it. But when we have not been to the Playoffs since 2008, I am done with Mediocre talent, like Matt Moore, although you are right, he may view himself as starter in Arena Football. Nothing personal dude, but I want a back up who could actually step up and become a top 5 QB, Moore will never be that...

Hayden, sorry dude. Matt Moore and the word Excellent do not go in the same sentence.

I do not believe that DeBerg was on the roster when the season started. Not many teams are willing to pay an old vet like that the league minimum to be a 3rd string QB.

If you get down to your 3rd string QB you are screwed anyway. Your options at that point are to go out and sign a veteran like DeBerg who does not have a job. If you are staring at a 4 game stretch where you have to start Devlin then you are calling a player like Kyle Orton(did someone sign him?) anyway......that is if your team is still in contention for anything.

For that reason I like the idea of only keeping 2 QBs. It allows another roster spot for some of this talent we have at WR. If we run a lot of 4 WR sets we will need 6 good WRs on the roster in case two of them get injured. I think we have 7 worth keeping tbh.

Btw, I was at the game that Steve DeBerg lead the phins to victory over the Patriots. Don Shula had just recorded win #325 to break the record the previous week in Philadelphia. If you will recall the Phins were down to their 3rd string QB to finish that game. The Phins had a lead and were basically able to "hold on" as almost every play in the 2nd half was a run. The Phins immediately signed DeBerg after that game. DeBerg started THE VERY NEXT GAME and lead the phins to a W. He also won the game after that which was the memorable Thanksgiving game vs. Dallas. So he recorded 2 Ws in a matter of 4 days when he was just brought in off the street. Unfortunately, that was the last W of the season for the Phins that year.

But, the point is that few teams roll with their 3rd stringer as a starter if they are faced with having to do so for any amount of time beyond 1 week. I believe there were a couple of teams last year who faced similar situations and picked up a vet off the street last season. The Phins can keep just 2 QBs and if one of them gets injured they can go sign a veteran to be the backup for however long they need him to be.

There are 2 scenarios in which I keep a 3rd string QB........
1) I have a young player who I feel like I might be able to develop into a good starter one day
2) Im willing to start him if my top 2 QBs get injured

Does Devlin fit either of those 2 criteria? If he does not, then there is no point in keeping him. He has been here several years now. I would hope that Philbin would know by now if Devlin has starter potential in the future. Personally I think if Devlin were actually any good he would at least be the backup by now. The fact that we kept Moore tells me Devlin is not good and is not becoming good. I do not see the point in keeping him on the final roster.

First off I never said we had Deberg at start of that season ! But we did bring him in after Mitchell went down and we were playing our 3rd string guy who had some spunk ! He did ok for us and did even better once he left us and went to GB! Our 3rd. String guy i mean.

Other than that yeah Deberg was ok for us! And I too do not think our 3rd string guy is all that! Otherwise he could have pushed for Moores job and possibly taken it! Personally i think they might be trying to get rid of him now!

Yep. Because they grow on trees.

As a back up QB it does.

Disagree. There are QBs on the street now that are just as good as any 3rd QB we choose to carry. Really, if it comes down to using a 3rd QB youre pretty much ****ed anyhow, so why not use the extra roster spot on a WR?

The patsies have been subscribing to this I believe.

Number 1 and number 2 get the snaps in practice. Number 3 runs the scout team to simulate the opposition for the defense to practice against. That's why everyone keeps three.
