I understand that, but the question still stands, who will be the field coach if you trade Zach, and Junior retires?

Who says we need a "field coach"? I can't imagine paying two or three "field coaches" $3-5 million a year each. That's a lot of cap space for a "field coach."

I remember when we used to be a young and hungry team. Back when ZT, JT, Madison, and Surtain were in their mid-20s. They didn't need "field" coaches to blossom into top-notch players (Although we did bring in reasonably paid vets like Trace Armstrong, vets who weren't associated with a failed chapter in Miami Dolphin history like our current crop of JJ-era vets). We need to get some more picks so that Saban has a better chance of finding the next generation of gems like ZT (5th round pick), Madison (2nd round pick), and Taylor (3rd round pick). We've lost 18 of our last 25 games. Our JJ-era vets' days are numbered, and we're at least two more offseasons away from becoming a true contender again. By the time we're ready to contend again, all of our JJ-era vets will be in the twilight of their careers or retired. We need to truly rebuild. We need to focus on becoming a hungrier, and much younger, team.

I hear your opinion, but I disagree! You have to keep some experience, and knowledge on the field, other wise these guys will be out of position, and getting beat quite often. If you are going to do this it has to be a transition period, not straight from vets to rookies. If you do that you will have some severe growing pains!

If you worried about cap money, then you handle this behind close doors, and re-work the deal in away where he still has his pride, and dignity!

JJ completely rebuilt the team in '96. With the exception of Marino, a HOFer who doesn't fall into the same category as ZT, JT, and Madison, JJ dumped or didn't resign all of our 30+ year old vets. We went 8-8 that year (we were 9-7 the year before), and then steadily improved afterwards.

We need to get younger and hungrier.

You can do it, but it may not be as easy as you think. Example San Diego showed Junior and Harrison the door. Harrison goes to New England, and thrives big time, and in the meantime the Charger defense sucked for awhile!

They traded Harrison and Seau in 2003 after finishing 8-8 in 2002 (We'll be damn lucky to finish 6-10, which would make us 10-22, under .333, over the last two seasons with JT, ZT and Madison leading the way). In 2004 they went 12-4. They didn't need Seau and Harrison as "field coaches" in order to blossom into contenders for the first time in a decade. Perhaps they wouldn't have blossomed into contenders had Harrison and Seau stuck around.

We've lost 18 of our last 25 games, folks. I have no idea why you think we still have a chance of winning the Super Bowl with JJ-era vets. We're a good two to three offseasons of rebuilding away from becoming true contenders again. By the time that day comes, ZT, JT, and Madison will either be in the twilight of their careers or retired. We're not going to win a championship with ZT, JT and Madison. We need to get younger and hungrier.

Your opinion is your opinion, it doesn't mean everyone else has to agree with that.:)

I agree with you but because we say this people will think we dont like our vets

i can see giving away madison, but JT and Zach still have the tenacity that they had when they were younger. we need to keep those two on our defense for years to come to help teach new players. id rather limit zachs role for a younger, faster LB than trade him or flat out cut him. he still provides talent to our team

Id keep JT.

I would support Saban with whatever he decided, but me personally, I wouldn't even consider trading Zack Thomas. Miami has had some great middle linebackers over the years with Zack being the best. He has given his all for this team and deserves to retire a Dolphin and have his name put in the ring of honor. I would no more want to trade Zack Thomas as I would have wanted to trade Dan Marino in his later years.
We need more players on this team with Zacks heart and desire and as always this is JMO.

i love zach, i dont want to trade him, but probably a mid 3rd
