What happens if Feely has a decent season?

First of all we will probably draft a QB no matter what. The question is going to be how early in the draft...
It will all depend on how he finishes. If he starts with 2 TD's and 15 Ints, but finishes with 18 and 5... then I think we have our starter for a while and we won't draft a QB until late. IF he is just average/mediocre the whole year... yeah we probably draft a QB early.

gus sucks. starting him would be a waste of a season. we need to see if feeley is the franchise qb. give him a chance to start. if he sucks it up this year, then he is cut and we need to draft a qb in the 1st round of next year. if he is good this year, then he stays and i still think we draft a qb in the 3rd-5th rounds of next year draft.

Lets just say the dolphins go 8-8 next season and Feely has 20 tds and 20 ints. Thats a decent season but it isnt anything special. Do we draft a QB do we get a starting veteran or do we wait another season to see what he can do? how many seasons should we wait for him to develope?

You realize that 20 INTs would have tied for the league lead, right? A 3:2 TD:INT ratio is about average for a starting QB in the NFL right now. If Feeley had something like 21 TD and 14 INT, that would be about a league average season.

Now, that said, would that be enough to bring him back? I really don't know. I think if Feeley developed into an average NFL QB, we could live with that until something better came up, given that the direction of the team appears to be defense-first.

I think he needs to have an above average season to stick around. If he does not win the starting job he's definately gone IMO. Gus I think has a good chance of being on the roster next season if a Qb is drafted to either hold the position till the QB is ready or be the backup.

I agree with you completely, if he does not win the starting job this year, he is gone and Saban will take a QB in next years draft.

i think gus will win and start this year and next year, and maybe a little of the next while, one of the talented Qb's we will draft this year groom.

I think he likes Gus also. Why would he bring him in to show someone else the system. I don't think so. I agree with you that he'll start untill they get someone to groom. Just like in Philly when they got Doug Pederson to groom McNabb when McNabb was ready they got rid of Pederson. Now weather that's AJ or someone else I'm not sure but I tend to agree with another poster that Saban will want his own guy to run the system. I am not a fan of Gus but look at it this way he's better than Pederson and he worked for McNabb.

if he puts together a good season i think we will take one of the second rd qbs because you then can develop them while feeley starts another yr then you have your future qb for example leak young tate or whitehurst

I think those QB's are 1st rd prospects, and it's not a given that Young,Leak, come out. I'm not sure what year Tate is in but I don't believe he is a Sr, so it's not a given any of those QB's would be available except Whitehursrt, who'll have to rebound tremendously from last season.

In that scenerio I think we would keep Feeley around another year but still draft a qb in the draft. Let Feeley have another year to improve, if not then trade his arse for a 3rd or 4th.

I second this motion

There is no way 20 INT's would be decent! 20 INT's would have tied for the league lead in most interceptions last year. Absurd. And, an equal # of TD's to INT's is a horrible average.

A decent year would be a QB rating of 83-85 or higher. That would be decent. But, to get there he would at least have to have about a 3-2 TD to INT ratio.

If he did that, you still look at a good QB. You look at a good player at any position. QB would still be a position to consider if a guy is there who has potential. Even if Feeley has a 2-1 TD/INT ratio, with a 90+ QB rating and we go 12-4, you would still consider a young QB at some point in the draft.

Sorry for repeating what you said - I missed your post. But, I agree. We would still want to get a young QB - possibly even in the 1st round.

I think Feeley needs to:
1. Clearly win the starting job,
2. Keep the starting job,
3. a. Have an above average season AND take a pay cut or,
b. Have a Pro-Bowl caliber year

in order for him to stay. I think we take a qb in the draft regardless, it's just a matter of whose roster spot he takes and how early we take him, as earlier stated.

Plain and simple, if Feeley plays solid football and the Dolphins win, we don't need to draft a QB.

Do you know how many starting QBs in the NFL dont have pro-bowl caliber years?

Feeley also only makes 1 million a year.... thats not much compared to the other QBs in the NFL.... We have other positions that are greater need than QB.

20 picks is too many for a team coached by Nick Saban. IMO he would look for a QB that would take better control of the ball
