'85 Bears-Dolphins SUPER BOWL???
Ok, people. I love my 'Fins and everything and would have absolutely loved to have seen an '85 Bears-Dolphins SUPER BOWL... but...
I challenge ANYONE to go back and watch that Monday Night game against the Bears and tell me...
1. Who started at QB for the Bears that game. Oh. Uh-hummm. Thank you.
2. If MAYBE - just maybe - Ditka didn't have the W-R-O-N-G gameplan in (on purpose??? fix??? seriously, watch the damn game and tell me something doesn't smell bad)... anyway, wrong gameplan in place for playing the 'Fins DEFENSE... forget Marino and our offense... the Bears lost that game for not grinding the damn ball out with Walter and keeping Marino on the bench (watch the second half closely - Bears had made adjustments but the game was already out of reach).
3. How many lucky breaks did Miami get in that game (remember the tipped pass that ended up flying waaaay up in the air and eventually caught for a TD [I think] by Clayton [again, I think].
Seriously, I remember watching that game when I was like 14 and getting all GEEKED up about it... lost my voice from screaming I was so happy. The memory of that game stayed with me for years. Then, the year we got Ricky, I got GEEKED UP AGAIN for my 'Fins and I decided to take a walk thru memory lane... bought that game tape... listen... I was SOOOOO disappointed. People's memories do fail them, folks. That game was a joke. If ever I thought a pro football game was fixed... this one sure looks like it. Watch Ditka on the sidelines if you doubt. THEN come back and post here.
Looking back, I'd love to have seen Miami play Chicago in the Super Bowl... if only to see if that MNF game was BS (fixed/thrown/whatever) or not.
Finally, I think people's memories are REALLY selective. For as much as Miami AS A TEAM played sloppy in the AFC Championship game against New England... Marino stunk it up that night, people. Again, go back and watch the tape. It's sad, but it was signs of what was more to come and, coincidentally, exactly what scouts had felt would be Marino's drawback (coming out of college)... Danny Boy never could lose a battle to win the war... that is, he FORCED THE DAMN BALL too much. Egos like his are prone to that mistake. Sorry, but the worst thing that ever happened to Marino was for Strock to have left the team. But that's another thread.
Peace. And don't be hating if I'm not all gushing and sh*t about Marino on the eve of his enshrinement. He's done a lot for football and the 'Fins, specifically, but I'd say his off-field efforts are as much or more to be recognized right now than his play. On the field... he was great... but he wasn't prefect. What's sad is, he could have been... if (as I suggest) he'd checked that titanic ego at the door. That's my only beef with Marino, really. Kinda makes me think of Carl Lewis. Imagine these two yelling at the top of their lungs in a hotel lobby check-in arguing for the last room...
"I'm CARL LEWIS!!!" "I'm DAN MARINO"
"I'M CAAAARL LEEEWIS!!!" "I'M DAN FREAK'n MARIIIINO!!!" And so on.
