Where Does Miami Save Sacks This Year?

Don't know yet, no one does, and 40 sacks is far from good, if we can get there.

Yes we do. We may not know how good or bad James is, but we know he isn't Tyson Clabo. We also don't know how good or bad Turner, Thomas, and Shelley are, but we also know they are not the lethargic John Jerry.

If you think Tyson Clabo and John Jerry could be upgrades on our current roster, then :tubes:

For now, let's forget about overall pass blocking, hits and hurries, and just focus on how we keep Tannehill of his back fewer than 58 times by projecting where we are going to do that.

We had 7 team sacks on defenders being unblocked on the blitz. I'm thinking that Lazor and Benton can cut that to maybe 4.

Tannehill too 3 for holding the ball too long. That was good with Foles taking 6. The same would be fine.

TE's gave up 2 Don't see any room to improve.

RB's gave up 5. Maybe we can cut that to 2 or 3.

So, with little luck, we cut 5 sacks.

On to the OL, who gave up 41 sacks. This is not exact, with all our changes but, close enough.

McKennie & Martin gave up 14 sacks. Albert gave up 4 but, missed 4 games, and is coming to a new team. Let's **** him for 6, and w save 8.

Pouncey only gave up 2. Hope for the same.

Clabo gave up 11. I'm thinking that James, as a rookie, gives up 10.

Jerry gave up 5. The average for an OG is 4. I don't see Shelly being any better.

Cog gave up 6, Brenner 1, and Garner2. Maybe Dallas in between Albert and Pouncey, gives up 4.

Based on the above, we may be able to cut down to 40 but, that is being pretty optimistic.

Blitz:
I believe the blitz will at times still be a probelm, I believe it will probably be less then last year though. From 7 to 5 sacks

Ryan Tannehill (Holding too long):
Tannehill (like most young QBs) will have moments when he will get mixed up and have to eat it, and with such a fast paced offense, mistake will happen, including overthinking at times to hold longer then should. From 3 to 3 sacks (I expect improvement by the end of the year).

TE:
I agree with Southbeach, should be no change. From 2 to again 2 sacks

RB:
With Moreno, Miami should have better blocking from the RBs, but he may not be on the field as much as people expected considering how much better Miller has been looking running with the ball. Miller still is not going to be that effective a blocker, so the amount will get better but probably by not as much as we hope. From 5 to 4 sacks

LT:
The Biggest difference will come from here. As SB said, Albert gave up only 4 sacks in 12 games (That’s about a 3rd of a sack each game, so in 16 games, that would come out to 5 sacks), but I expect even better stats from Albert this year then last. From 14 sacks to 3 sacks.

LG:
This is the tricky one, how good will a 1st year starting guard (coming back from injury) look, well so far Dallas has looked good (pads will tell us much much more), and he will be in the middle of two premium linemen to help him. From 9 sacks to 6 sacks.

Center:
Pouncy is one of the best Centers in the league, and will have something to prove from last year. From 2 sacks last years to at worse 2 sacks again.

RG:
This is the area that might actually get worse pass blocking. Even though Jerry had another inconsistent year, Shelly’s specialty is run blocking, yet very bad pass-blocking. We can only hope as he gets more experience pass blocking, he will get better. From 5 sacks to 7 sacks

LT:
James is going to be a rookie playing RT, going against some tough pass-rushers in our division alone, so there is no reason I should feel as confident as I do with him pass blocking, but I really have a good feeling about him, he will still have bad growing pains, but still think by mid-season, he should be at least solid. From 11 sacks to 6 sacks.

So it will go from 58 sacks in my opinion to 38.

No more Go GO Go that should cut 30 sacks right there

If James isn't better than Clabo day one.....we wasted our first round pick.

Also.....58 sacks is top ten all-time bad....if we didn't greatly improve our pass blocking in free agency and the draft we need another GM search....the new scheme will cut at least 10 sacks alone....I expect us to be in the 30's.

37 was top 10 last year, I don't see us being top 10 or even top 15. I would put the over/under at about 43.5.

The Bengals gave up 29 so that type number might be possible if everything goes right, but they still have a really good young RB and a couple of good all around TEs. I don't have a pff subscription, would you mind breaking down where their sacks from from?

In 2012, Tannehill was sacked 35 times but threw a lot less. One thing I forgot to enter in is Lazor hopefully giving us a balanced O, which will obviously take away a number of sacks. Also, RT only threw to RB's 10 % of his passes (NFL low), and NFL most to WR's last year. That would reduce the sacks, as well as increasing his accuracy %.

UPON FURTHER REVIEW, we can greatly reduce the sack total without good play from the 3 questions on the OL in pass protect but, would need to run better and more often.

I said I don't know, and you said the same for half of the equation. How does anyone know without seeing the 3 positions play?

Jerry has played well in pass protect, while being horrible on the run. Clabo played well in the second half but, is older and would only be a short tem band aid IF James does not impress in camp.

If Shelly is the starter for 16 games he gives up 10 easily by himself, probably more along the lines of 14-16.

only 1 positional improvement? So you think Clabo is better than James? And I'm not sure John Jerry is better than anyone. I'd say there are at least 3 positional upgrades, and factoring in a new OC, I'll go with 40 sacks this season.

If you think Shelly is an upgrade in pass blocking to John Jerry I have to question your football IQ. If Jerry was still on the team he would start over Shelly 10 times out of 10.

Clabo in the last 5/6 games of the season played better than I expect James to play. It can take a tackle a season to get up to speed. I don't think it will be a wasted pick if he doesn't play as good as Clabo did at the end of last year, IMO.

PFF has 21 given up individually. The other 8 were team sacks, I believe. Their TE's and RB's gave up 0 sacks, and Daulton took 2. Their OL had 19.

The year before, they had 40 individually, with Daulton taking 8.

As far as sacks, the worst in the NFL last year were Winters from the Jets with 10. Some what surprising were Mankins from NE with 9, and the pick, who many thought would be Pro Bowl for 10 years, Warmack with 7. Now, we expect Dallas and Shelly to be better. It could happen but, am not betting on it. We shall see.

That's fair. Chances are that James will take a year to develop. We will see something in preseason but, it's not gonna matter much until he plays vs NFL DE's going full speed in something other than total vanilla. I'm hoping for the best.

Clabo was owned in December against Buffalo.....he may hav played better against weaker matchups but when he lined up against a good player he looked pathetic.
