Where were you when Marino tore his achillies heel?

I was packing up a moving truck, moving into a new house. Was watching the game and literally dropped a television when it happened. Didn't even care I just busted a new 36" TV. I felt numb.

Sitting at home watching football with my mom and dad when they (CBS) had an update and broke the story. Very dark day in my household. It was very quiet and somber for the rest of the day to say the least.

I was in middle school, in the backyard raking leaves and listening to whatever game was on the radio (probably the Vikings). They broke in with the update and I couldn't believe it. I ran inside and turned the TV on and saw the footage of it, and my heart sank. That was a sad day. :(

I never saw it. What happened? It was after he threw it because he completed it so did someone hit him late or something? Did he just step on it the wrong way?

The way I remember it Dan went to step up in the pocket, he stumbled a bit but it just looked like he might have caught his cleat on something. He has the presence of mind to throw a short pass off of his front foot (the only foot he is standing on at this point) and then goes down clutching his calf as the play continued on in front of him.

Sitting in my crackerbox apartment in Tupelo, Mississippi (my first job after graduation). Cussed, stomped, threw my beer against the wall. Dan Frickin' Marino injured by a clump of FARKING DIRT!!!!!!!!!!

If I am not mistaking it was a torn bicep injury but I am not sure because he had multiple injuries at that time. I borrowed a Browns fans binoculors to see who was down and saw #56.

i believe he tore an ab muscle. it was lingering, couldn't get rid of it.

At home. Does anyone remember how it happened? He dropped back and the turf slid out from his footing. The Cleveland stadium had just been turfed over from baseball.
The next play he went down for good.

- I still hate baseball.

They also didn't have the same kind of achilles tear. I remember at the time reports saying Marino might not ever play again because his achilles didn't tear quickly and cleanly but rather was more like an explosion where pieces of the muscle went everywhere. This made the surgery that much more difficult and to this day the achilles Marino tore is noticeably smaller than his other leg.

In other cases, much like a broken bone, if the tear is clean it's relatively easy to piece it back together. I know this because I tore mine a few years after Marino did. If Marino had tore his in the same fashion he did ten or even five years earlier he probably would have never been able to play again because the medical technology to repair his kind of tear simply didn't exist.

- it was a rupture. The tendon was gone.

I was in the military and spent that weekend on a trip to Montana for a funeral detail.

They had their little post-funeral thing (what's that called?) at a bar, and I was watching the game there.

I was crushed. I had a couple of people giving me their condolences after that, thinking I knew the deceased.

I was watching some game at a sportsbar (they were not showing the Phins game) and I remember hearing he got hurt, and later out I found out it was his achilles.....I remember him coming back the following year (1994)with the opener against New England.... he came back wearing the specially designed shoe that looked almost like a basketball high top..he threw 5 tds, and I think over 450 yards....I'll never forget that, we beat New England 39-35 :)

This was the only Dolphins game that i have ever been to. Yes it was the worst game that i have ever been to cause of that. I believe that i will go to the game this year at Cleveland. But if something like that happens again i will never go to another fins game i will just stay happy sitting at home watching. LOL

Great Great thread. Will remember it forever. I am from Pittsburgh and i was on my way to see the steelers play the chargers. I was on the bus at the tiime and a man mentioned it. I couldnt believe it. I will forever love Marino. I still have newspaper clippings from most of his career. Bottom line is that was my first nfl game i ever attended. Greg Lloyd put Stan Humphries out in the third quarter and John Friesz came in and stunk the joint up. Well now i am finally knocking out one of my lifetime dreams and thats being a season ticket holder of the miami dolphins.

i remember my dad asking me what happened to marino (jokingly before we knew how bad it was) hes a pats fan. i wanted to cry, i went and paced my backyard i couldnt believe it
