Why Are Out Of Towners Still Dolphans?

Real fans don't disown their team. Fair weather fans are the worst.

Even if I did root for the team where I live, it's the Redskins...they are both dysfunctional all my friends call the Dolphins "Redskins South"

Since I live up here near Philly, and have always lived in this area, I have been asked this question many times. I really have no idea why I am a Phins fan, but I have been as long as I can remember. My three kids are all Phin fans also, by their choice, which I cannot explain (ages 36, 33 and 32). For me, it is tradition.

And although I have no clue to the answer to this question, I can't wait for the season to start. Again.

Why Are Out Of Towners Still Dolphans?....I ask myself that question every day.

I stay true because I'm die-hard like Bruce Willis. Moreover, Where else can I go............been riding this ship since the mid 70's. None else appeals to me.

I was in Junior High School when Miami was awarded the franchise and even participated in the Name the Team contest. Although I did submit Dolphins as one of my choices (along with thousands of others) I did not win the grand prize of a lifetime seaon ticket. I moved from Miami for good in 1975 and even with Carolina getting a team and only being 1 1/2 hour away I still remained a Dolphin's fan.
Its hard for tme to imagine having another team replace the Dolphins in my heart. Enjoyed the good times and endured(ing) the hard times. To me that is what a fan does. I do hope all Miami Dolphin fans will experience a Super Bowl win. I know I want to be here when it happens again.

My dad was born in Merritt Island in '52 so he has been a Dolphins fan ever since the inaugural season in 1966. Right before I was born my parents moved to North Dakota so they could both get jobs working in a power plant/mine. I can honestly say I have been a fan since birth. Growing up in ND there were always a ton of Vikes, Packers and Bronco fans but I prided my self on having my own team. From the old Hutch uniforms, to the posters on the wall, to the aqua starter jacket I had it all.

My first real fan moment that I remember is my uncle teasing me during the Super Bowl when the Fins got beat by the 49ers. He teased me so much I bawled my eyes out by the end of the game. I can still remember by mom telling me not to worry and that they will have plenty of other chances because Marino was very young. Alas, it was never meant to be. I remember the day my dad bought a Telestar satellite system so that we could literally get every TV station in America as well as MTV (when it still played actual videos). The satellite was enormous and I thought my mom was going to kill my dad when she got home from work but he didn't care. We had a new way to watch the Fins and that was all that mattered.

Unfortunately for my son, who is now 6, I have passed my obsession on to him. If I have my Fins hat on so does he. If I'm watching the game, so is he. Sunday's have become quite the ordeal in our household. We have made it a Sunday tradition to go to the local restaurant for breakfast and grill no matter what the temperature. I have found that with my own father the bond of loving the Fins is one that can never be broken and I look forward to strengthening that current bond with my current son, as well as the 2nd that is now on the way.

This Q from the OP is a bit offensive to us 'out of towners'. It suggests that you're not a true fan of the team and can come n go as you please. Well any fan that switches teams for whatever reason, was never a true fan to begin with, because fans don't switch teams, bandwagoneers switch teams.

Disagree. Locals have it much easier with family, friends, and co-workers being fans, going to games, more media coverage, events, and meeting new fans consistently. Out of Towners don't have all that which makes things more difficult. No?

Born a Phin Phan bc that was my Dad's team. Moved to Atlanta. Honestly after all the abuse the Fins put me through I wish I could just let them go and pick another team...I just cant do it a fan is a fan

I've never lived in Florida, but became a fan in 1970 at age 10, before they had won anything. I'm still a fan, but my passion has been ebbing. There's no way I can adopt another team, and certainly not the hated local Patriots, but am now as much or more interested in the general NFL as the Dolphins specifically.

Losing is one thing, and we actually haven't been bad lately, but stuff like Bully-gate, PED suspensions take a toll. Since the 2008 miracle year, almost all our headlines have been bad.

I'm a local and gonna stick with all Miami teams for life, even the Marlins. However, there are many Out of Town fans who have stuck with the Phins through many years of disappointment, when It would be so easy to change to a different team.

Why?

I'm sure somebody has already stated this, but I don't believe in changing teams EVER, unless you're a casual/female fan (men who are bandwagon fans don't get a pass from me). Born in Miami so while I live on the opposite side of the country now, I would never ever ever switch teams as painful as it may be sometimes.

I fell in Love with them as a boy growing up in Miami in the 70's. Even after moving to Ft Myers could not stop thinking about them.I moved to Georgia in 1996 and still had to get NFL Sunday ticket so I would not miss a game. Never even thought about another team. Now after 18 years I move back to Ft Myers and still bleed teal and orange but can save some by not having the Ticket. Why would anyone change even if there location did. I guess its the perfect marriage where you never stray.

probably see as much dolphins fans at the road games, as you would home games, so no.

Growing up in Brooklyn, NY, I was a Bills fan when I first started watching Football in the late 80's. When I moved to Miami in the mid 90's I became a Heat and Dolphins fan by virtue of not being able to watch anything other than regional broadcasts. Over the years I became a die hard fan and will NEVER change teams. I moved back to NY 10 years ago and get a ton of respect from locals for unwavering support after a 1-15 season and perennially losing, all while watching the local Giants win Super Bowls.

I love Miami, even bought a townhouse down there to travel to every other month. I also love the hell outta this team, and I hope we win a SB in my lifetime. My 2 year old son will also be a Dolfan if I can control it.

I became a fan when I lived in south Florida. Went to a few games as a kid. Now I go whenever they come out to Denver. But I'm strongly considering not going this year.
