Why Ryan Cook vs....

well thanks for your take...bad feet is always a bad omen...its one of my pet peeves with olineman...sounds like he's a terrible move player

b/t i wouldn't feel great about charlie johnson on the left side if i was you but god knows its better than playin phil the waist bender loadholt over there...

No problem sir, that's what I'm here for. I definitely don't feel good about starting Johnson at LT. I was really hoping that we brought him in to start at RG for us. Then McKinnie really screwed us.

He was not brought into the Phins to start and unlike Berger, he does not require a 700 K roster bonus because he is on the roster come game week. Never said he was the best, neither was berger but berger could not play anything but C. For whqt this kid cost it was good money spent. Much better then throwing away Bergers salary plus the 700K. Lots people do not know about things. If Pouncey gets hurt they will insert Incognito at center, not this kid.Yeah I meant Cook, Young went to Buffalo.

Outside of O'Harra, mostly because no one wanted him, Waters, Gurode and McKinnie wanted big bucks and pushed to be starters. Add to that, they had no interest at their age, to run around in the heat and unbearable humidity. Given a choice, players will pick someplace else to end their career instead of the Jungle like atmosphere of S. Florida.

gurode and Waters signed for 1.5 million not exactly big money. yea more money than Cook but Cook had fell all the way to third string and never has been good unlike the guys u mention. How is signing a below average lineman good in any way. Yea cook can play many positions but he is not good at any of them so whats the value. Lets not act like he lost out on his job because they were super talented on thier oline or he made so much money they had to cut him. He plain was not good. Now who knows he may become a good player but it doesnt make it a good signing based on his history

waters signed for $5.5 mil over 2 years...gurode was $1.5 mil for one year...gurode as insurance for matt birk...i've heard rumors waters will start monday at right guard vs us

The Vikings just brought in Joe Berger for a visit. We may have just done a trade for our ****tiest lineman lol.
U will probably be happier with Berger. Not sure why people think he is strictly a center. He is not good either but he like Cook is versatile

waters contract is 2 yrs 3 mill but he can get another 2.5 million through incentives. Both of these guys were at least at some point pro bowlers , very recently. Gurode was cut for pure money and waters to a degree although I had read that Waters play had slipped. Both of these guys are miles better than Ryan Cook who just continually got tried at spots and beat out and moved again.

i think berger got a bad rap when he was here...he might be a little undersized in some respects and he's not a great handle strength over his face player but he was a decent athlete and a pretty heady player...not many guys can neutralize or turn 34 nose tackles by themselves and berger was no exception there...he played better at center for us against 43 fronts where the dt's weren't quite so large

thanks for the heads up then...the guys on new england sports tonight only said 2 years $5.5 mil yesterday...didn't break it down further like that

Ryan Cook is prime for a fresh start

Mullett,

I didn't follow the Vikings in 2007 or 08, but I watched every game last season and every game this preseason. I think I saw things you didn't because you're so critical of Cook, based on impressions formed of him early on, that you can't imagine him doing anything right.

I'm of the opinion that Cook outplayed Herrera this preseason and, if he hadn't been cut, he would've taken Herrera's starting position this season. (BTW, lots of people posted surprise on the discussion forums when Cook was cut.) I think Frazier wanted to clean out the Childress leftovers, for one. I think he's building for the future, for another thing, and, bottom line, he wants to give his draft picks a chance to prove themselves so he can build for the future (on the cheap).

There are any number of reasons players get cut other than poor performance (especially when there's a regime change). Last season, on a number of occasions, when Cook was filling in for someone, and AP broke one for big yardage, I hit replay and, lo and behold, he had run right off Cook's heels. I happen to know the guy. He is quite intelligent (enough to learn plays well enough to be ready to cover anywhere on the OLine any given Sunday. Give that a try, Mullett.) He's got five years of NFL experience, he's never been injured, and, after years of the kind of crap people like you dish out, he's definitely ready to prove himself (not that he's motivated by naysayers. He doesn't even read this stuff, but I do and it pisses me off.) So shut up and go back to your regular Vikings discussion board and stop trying to make yourself feel so damned important by running him down. I came here because I figured people like you would show up and try to poison the well for him in Miami. I just hope the fans can see through your obvious need to feel knowledgeable and authoritative and give the guy an honest chance. He's a quality individual and I think his best days are ahead. Peace out.

So if cook poutplayed herrera why was he the third string guard and cut, makes no sense because he was not expensive

New coaches like to put their own stamp on the team. Cook was a Childress pick. There are lots of possibilities for why someone is cut that don't add up to the outsider. Why was Edds cut? It's complicated, you know? So I hate to let someone waltz in and just label him a bum when I happen to know he was told the team wanted to go in a different direction; that he wasn't cut due to poor performance. If you watch the tape from this preseason, Cook clearly outplayed Herrera (because Herrera's coming back from an injury,) but, obviously, in the coaches' minds, the other factors (some financial, some about the new direction of the team, etc.) outweighed the performance (and besides, it's not good for morale to cut a starter when he's trying to come back from an injury.)

No, Cook wasn't expensive, but they DID get three rookies for the price of one 5-yr. vested veteran. I'm obviously speculating like everybody else. Just wanted to stop by and offer a different view of the guy. I think Miami got a good deal, but only time will tell, right? I hope this makes sense.

First of all it was pretty documented that Frazier wanted Cook to take on a larger role this year from local newspaper reports> Cook has continaully lost the starting job on that team to other players no matter where he was moved. Cook didnt outplay anyone this preseason and in fact was demoted behind a rookie. I guess if signing other teams crap players who cant beat out less than average players is a good deal to u then more power to u but cook offers little to nothing in value and we might as well had kept an undrafted rookie. Not many people think Cook is a quality player. He may become one who knows but after 5 years of moving him arouund on line and having to replace him, the vikings were smart to cut him.
