Zim’s Grades For The Game: Week 5 Edition

This was a big loss to an inferior division opponent. The disappointment is complete. I can’t name one unit on this team that played even decent today and the grades will reflect that. On to the grades:

QB — The Good: Thompson had a couple nice throws. I mean….He’s a rookie making his first start. He did OK.

The Bad: Thompson looked like a rookie today. He looked confused pre-snap on a ton of plays. While he did OK for a rookie. He wasn’t good by any stretch of the imagination. Teddy Bridgewater played one play and had zero pre-snap awareness on that play. I guess he didn’t think that Gardner might blitz there? Regardless, another bad start for this team and an early hole we had to try to overcome because of a poor pre-snap read by a below average QB.

The Grade: F. Awful performance led by a horrible day by our QB’s.

RB’s — The Good: Mostert had 113 Yards on 18 carries. That’s a 6.4 yard average. Not bad.

The Bad: Tyreek Hill was our 2nd most productive rusher with 2 rushes for 13 yards. Pathetic. Mostert isn’t that good in Pass protection. That cost us.

The Grade: D +. You know it’s a bad day when you have a RB run for 113 yards and the grade is only a D +.

WR’s — The Good: Hill looked determined today. He had 7 catches. Waddle had 3 catches.

The Bad: 10 catches for 70 yards by Hill and Waddle is a sure sign we had a rookie QB playing 98% of the game.

The Grade: C - . I was hoping for more…..But the QB situation hurt.

TE’s — The Good: Smythe had a nice TD on a trick play.

The Bad: Are you kidding me? Gesicki’ s blocking is beyond pathetic. He had 1 catch in garbage time for 30 yards. We need to trade him for something. He does not fit on this offense. Period.

The Grade: F. You would think a rookie QB would be looking for his TE’s….BUT….They we’re invisible today. Terrible performance.

OL — The Good: This unit opened up enough holes for Mostert to get 113 yards. That a positive.

The Bad: The pass blocking was awful all day. Eichenberg is a total joke and is now rivaling Iggy as our worst draft pick in recent years. Little was not good today. We lost Armstead early…,But when you sign injury prone players….You shouldn’t be shocked when they get injured. A lot.

The Grade: D -. This is really disappointing. I was hoping the improvement we had seen with this unit was permanent. That hope was thoroughly dashed.

DL — The Good: Early on we had VERY good pressure on Wilson. We had a 4th down stop. They stuffed a few runs.

The Bad: This might be the worst tackling defense in the NFL and it showed today. The DL was OK but we couldn’t get the stops we really needed.

The Grade: D. Just not good enough today.

LB’s — The Good: Baker had a nice tackle or 2. Early pressure by Ingram and even 1 by Phillips had us in the game in the first half.

The Bad: NOWHERE near good enough for these guys. The tackling is terrible. Phillips is a HUGE disappointment right now. HUGE. I’m sorry…..But something has to change with this unit or we’re not going anywhere this year.

The Grade: F. Enough said there.

DB’s — The Good: Not Much at all.

The Bad: Missed tackles. Blown assignments. The Iggy experiment should finally be over. Holland has been invisible the past 2 games. Depressing.

The Grade: F. X and Jones are hopefully back next week.

ST’s — The Good: Not much. A FG…. A 47 yard punt. That’s it.

The Bad: A 35 yard punt. A Huge return allowed because of poor tackling. A missed FG. Just an awful return game.

The Grade: F. Need I say more?

Coaching — The Good: I guess we were in the game until halftime….. That was about it.

The Bad: Costly Penalties. Horrible defensive play calls. Boyer sucks. McDaniel calling multiple pre snap motion calls with a Rookie QB that wasn’t prepared.

The Grade: F. Boyer is not a good DC. Period. His feeling for the flow of the game is pathetic. I thought the team just didn’t look good overall and I blame coaching for a big part of it.

Conclusion: This was a VERY bad loss. Period. Again, I felt like we could have and should have won it. Right now, my admiration for McDaniel is fading and I’m definitely off the Josh Boyer bandwagon. Phillips has been far below average all year. Holland was invisible today. Gesicki needs to be traded immediately. A very disheartening loss to say the least.
While you didn't "sugar coat" it, I do not think you exaggerated any of it.
In our last 2 games we basically had three different QB's. Bad luck, but good teams recover from injuries and don't let their bad games limit their good games.

Fortunately for me, I went shooting because we don't get the Dolphins games broadcast here very often. When I left for the range, we were behind 12-0 and I was really dragging, while at the range I found out that we were ahead 17 to 15(?) and I became ecstatic. When I was done shooting, I found out we were WAY behind. My good shooting compensated a little for that 40 Burger we got FROM THE JETS!!

I also found out that three of the range employees were Dolphins fans, so there is that.

One of the guys tested me by asking if I was really a "fish" fan. I told him Dolphins were mammals, but he wasn't buying it.
I need to find out if these guys are on FinHeaven - LOL

I'm going to give FinHeaven a break this week while the Dolphins regroup and get ready for next week. Then I will be better placed to expound my "words of wisdom" on this board.

If I followed this board next week, I would have to put too many posters on ignore, so there is a reprieve for me from that - LOL

Phillips wasn't really that good last season... didn't he have like 7 sacks in a 3 game stretch, some of them were coverage or broken plays, etc, where he lucked into the sack... otherwise he had like 2 sacks the entire rest of the year. He was below mediocre for the most part last season. He has flashed a few nice plays every game. I really hope he starts to trend up by midseason.

I don't have anyone on ignore yet but my trigger finger is getting mighty twitchy .

Agree with Zim. I had low expectations going in, just too many injuries, but to me this loss falls solely on McDaniel and his staff.

Calling a play action screen pass on your own 2 yard line was beyond awful. Like vs Las Vegas WR screen bad.

The field goal attempt? Why not rush to the line and try to get them to jump? Worst case you take the delay of game and punt it, pinning them deep.

The multiple times the play would come in late. We got a delay of game after a kickoff! How is that even possible?

The ridiculous number of penalties.

There was some positives;

I believe this is the first game we didn’t give up an opening touchdown.

Personally I wouldn’t have gone for it at the end of the half but he had the right play for that situation.

Even with all the injuries we were in the game for 3 quarters.

Overall this game was a really bad look for a genius coach with 10 days to prepare and gave me very Gase like vibes. McDaniel, however, seems humble enough to fix what is broken unlike Gase.

No argument from me on your grades. The best part of seeing your grades is I‘m happy to see that you made it through Hurricane Ian and are back on here giving rational grades based on how the team and coaches performed today.

In the end, seeing so many of you who were impacted by the storm being able to watch the game and comment on this forum is far more important than what happened on the field today.

I give you credit if you can deal with some of the posters on here. You are a better man than I am because I have at least 40 posters on ignore and I enjoy this site a lot more because I no longer have to deal with their negativity.

Saleh wasn’t going to let his team be pushed around by his dweeby friend’s team on the other side… mental lapses in all three phases and it’s been a constant theme since game 1.

What’s with the missed tackles? Delay of games? Back end special teams play…

So far not impressed with the coaching job McDaniel has done. Flores at least had the team on edge. We are way too loose

Not using Gesicki correctly is on the coaching staff.

You'd better hope he doesn't go to a division rival where he will toast our lackluster TE coverage twice a year.
Nope, any coaching staff we’ve had hasn’t used him correctly. He’s just not that good.

Stop with that. Flores was a jerk and worst game day coach in history.

I'm fine with the posters I have on ignore - every week shows me I made the right decision. There are still oodles more people that have a sane conversation to pay attention to.

Yeah if only he was 6 ft 5 inches and muscle-bound like all the great coaches of yesteryear. Bill Belichick has a losing record without Brady as his QB but **** McDaniels for not winning with a 7th-round rookie QB right?

30-10 LAC

All losses obviously. Yea we were on edge with him.
