Buyer Beware - Comparing QB's- Kolb, Flynn, Young, Orton, Palmer, Hasselbeck & Bulger
After listing these QB's that might be available who do you think is best? Personally I wouldn't take any of them. Maybe Palmer. But he might not be available.
Kolb is another A J Feely waiting to happen. He short arms everything and they just stack the box on him. The same for Matt Flynn. Vince Young is better than both of them combined but his police blotter is worrisome. Even suicide was rumored. Marc Bulger is streaky as is Hasselbeck. So what is the answer? I have no idea. Good Luck with any of these.
I.
Kevin Kolb, Houston
Weight: 218
40 ; 4.83
Grade: 72
Strengths:
Kolb has good size and build for a NFL quarterback and excels at throwing short to mid-range passes. He can throw the ball on the move and is a threat to run with the ball if necessary. Kolb is a great leader and has started for four years at Houston. He would be an ideal West Coast quarterback once he learned the system.
Weaknesses:
Kolb did not play in a pro style offense at Houston and would have to learn the NFL style of progression and reads. He is unlikely to become an elite vertical passer. He must work on improving his mechanics, as he has a tendency to wind up too much. Kolb has as tendency to go to a three quarters delivery that causes the ball to get batted down at the line of scrimmage.
Overall:
Kolb was productive at Houston, but that was in a shotgun based, short throwing offense. He would have to take the time to learn the pro style offense, and his lack of arm strength will limit his ceiling. The question on Kolb will be if his success was due to the system or if he can mature into a solid NFL starter.

II.
Matt Flynn
SI Grade: 3.38
6’2”; 231 lbs; 40; 4.80
POSITIVES:
Competitive and hard working signal caller coming off a disappointing campaign. Sells the ball fakes, moves around the pocket to give himself a better view of the field and senses the rush. Flashes the ability to throw beautiful passes down the field and gets on hot streaks where he can be tough to stop.
NEGATIVES:
Throws with marginal past placement and accuracy. Consistently high of the mark or throws behind receivers. Stares down primary targets and puts the ball up for grabs. Holds the ball to long in the pocket.
ANALYSIS
Flynn has the physical tools to be first day draft selection yet he comes off a poor senior season is now likely a late round pick. Flynn must improve his throwing mechanics and pass placement if he.s to be anything other than a clipboard holder at the next level.

III.
Vince Young
SI Grade 4,41
6’4”; 229; 40; 4.45
BIO:
Three-year starter named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year last season. Also honored as the nation's top player with the Maxwell Award. Passing numbers included 65.2%/3,036/26/10 with a team-leading 155/1,050/10 on the ground. Combined for 467 total yards during the Longhorns. National Championship victory over USC. Led Texas to victory on eight different occasions when the team was trailing or tied at halftime, including five fourth-quarter drives.
POSITIVES:
Sensational athlete with a high upside. Possesses a quick release and can throw all the passes. Sells the ball fakes, withstands the rush and leads receivers between the hashes. Nicely times the outs, loses nothing throwing on the move and improvises when plays break down. Gets the ball downfield with a flick of his wrist. Accomplished carrying the ball, displaying vision, power and speed.
NEGATIVES:
Sloppy throwing motion and releases the ball below helmet level at times. Must improve his touch and downfield accuracy. Does not always find the safety and puts the ball up for grabs. Wilts under the rush, making poor choices and leaves the pocket early.
ANALYSIS:
A pressure player who performs brilliantly when the game's on the line, Young has the underlying skills to be a franchise quarterback at the next level. Needs a tremendous amount of work from the ground up, yet a perfect choice for a franchise building for the future rather than a team expecting immediate results.

I edited Vince Young's posting a bit because I was wrong and said his police report was a mile long. I researched it a bit. I was not fair. And for that I apologize. It isn't that long at all. In fact I could only find two incidents. Here they are. Draw your own conclusions. I believe he is the most talented of the group. And if you knew what happened was a fluke, no problem. I would say go and get him. But these reports are concerning just a bit. After considering it I personally would like to see him in Miami. But he scares me. Here are the reports with links.

Kyle Orton
6'4", 233 lbs; 40: 5.09
SI Grade 3.5
POSITIVES:
Heady, intelligent passer with solid intangibles. Patient in the pocket, buys time and waits for receivers to come free. Sees the field, reads the blitz and immediately gets the ball to the hot receiver. Possesses a nice sense of timing, leads receivers in the short field and zips the intermediate passes. Outstanding with the ball fakes, does not release the ball until he has an open receiver and always working to make something positive happen. Takes the safe underneath route if nothing's available rather than forcing the throw.
NEGATIVES:
Possesses an elongated/wind-up motion, which slows his release. Cannot drive the deep throw as receivers are constantly slowing down to make the reception. Forces passes downfield on occasion and must improve his long accuracy. Does not always see the field outside of the pocket. Benefits from taking most of his snaps out of the shotgun. Fizzled at the end of his senior campaign and was benched.
ANALYSIS:
A signal caller who will draw much debate and opinion, Orton has abilities to play in a short passing game. His timing and ability to throw the intermediate pass with accuracy are his best assets, yet he may be a quarterback who struggles in the vertical game. Will need time to learn a pro-passing offense rather than the spread formation he's accustomed to. A solid prospect who should be chosen during late in the draft's first day.
