Buyer Beware - Comparing QB's- Kolb, Flynn, Young, Orton, Palmer, Hasselbeck & Bulger

After listing these QB's that might be available who do you think is best? Personally I wouldn't take any of them. Maybe Palmer. But he might not be available.

Kolb is another A J Feely waiting to happen. He short arms everything and they just stack the box on him. The same for Matt Flynn. Vince Young is better than both of them combined but his police blotter is worrisome. Even suicide was rumored. Marc Bulger is streaky as is Hasselbeck. So what is the answer? I have no idea. Good Luck with any of these.

I.

Kevin Kolb, Houston
Weight: 218
40 ; 4.83
Grade: 72

Strengths:
Kolb has good size and build for a NFL quarterback and excels at throwing short to mid-range passes. He can throw the ball on the move and is a threat to run with the ball if necessary. Kolb is a great leader and has started for four years at Houston. He would be an ideal West Coast quarterback once he learned the system.

Weaknesses:
Kolb did not play in a pro style offense at Houston and would have to learn the NFL style of progression and reads. He is unlikely to become an elite vertical passer. He must work on improving his mechanics, as he has a tendency to wind up too much. Kolb has as tendency to go to a three quarters delivery that causes the ball to get batted down at the line of scrimmage.

Overall:
Kolb was productive at Houston, but that was in a shotgun based, short throwing offense. He would have to take the time to learn the pro style offense, and his lack of arm strength will limit his ceiling. The question on Kolb will be if his success was due to the system or if he can mature into a solid NFL starter.

II.

Matt Flynn
SI Grade: 3.38
6’2”; 231 lbs; 40; 4.80

POSITIVES:
Competitive and hard working signal caller coming off a disappointing campaign. Sells the ball fakes, moves around the pocket to give himself a better view of the field and senses the rush. Flashes the ability to throw beautiful passes down the field and gets on hot streaks where he can be tough to stop.

NEGATIVES:
Throws with marginal past placement and accuracy. Consistently high of the mark or throws behind receivers. Stares down primary targets and puts the ball up for grabs. Holds the ball to long in the pocket.

ANALYSIS
Flynn has the physical tools to be first day draft selection yet he comes off a poor senior season is now likely a late round pick. Flynn must improve his throwing mechanics and pass placement if he.s to be anything other than a clipboard holder at the next level.

III.

Vince Young
SI Grade 4,41
6’4”; 229; 40; 4.45

BIO:
Three-year starter named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year last season. Also honored as the nation's top player with the Maxwell Award. Passing numbers included 65.2%/3,036/26/10 with a team-leading 155/1,050/10 on the ground. Combined for 467 total yards during the Longhorns. National Championship victory over USC. Led Texas to victory on eight different occasions when the team was trailing or tied at halftime, including five fourth-quarter drives.

POSITIVES:
Sensational athlete with a high upside. Possesses a quick release and can throw all the passes. Sells the ball fakes, withstands the rush and leads receivers between the hashes. Nicely times the outs, loses nothing throwing on the move and improvises when plays break down. Gets the ball downfield with a flick of his wrist. Accomplished carrying the ball, displaying vision, power and speed.

NEGATIVES:
Sloppy throwing motion and releases the ball below helmet level at times. Must improve his touch and downfield accuracy. Does not always find the safety and puts the ball up for grabs. Wilts under the rush, making poor choices and leaves the pocket early.

ANALYSIS:
A pressure player who performs brilliantly when the game's on the line, Young has the underlying skills to be a franchise quarterback at the next level. Needs a tremendous amount of work from the ground up, yet a perfect choice for a franchise building for the future rather than a team expecting immediate results.

EDITED May 3, 2010
I edited Vince Young's posting a bit because I was wrong and said his police report was a mile long. I researched it a bit. I was not fair. And for that I apologize. It isn't that long at all. In fact I could only find two incidents. Here they are. Draw your own conclusions. I believe he is the most talented of the group. And if you knew what happened was a fluke, no problem. I would say go and get him. But these reports are concerning just a bit. After considering it I personally would like to see him in Miami. But he scares me. Here are the reports with links.

V.

Kyle Orton

6'4", 233 lbs; 40: 5.09
SI Grade 3.5

POSITIVES:
Heady, intelligent passer with solid intangibles. Patient in the pocket, buys time and waits for receivers to come free. Sees the field, reads the blitz and immediately gets the ball to the hot receiver. Possesses a nice sense of timing, leads receivers in the short field and zips the intermediate passes. Outstanding with the ball fakes, does not release the ball until he has an open receiver and always working to make something positive happen. Takes the safe underneath route if nothing's available rather than forcing the throw.

NEGATIVES:
Possesses an elongated/wind-up motion, which slows his release. Cannot drive the deep throw as receivers are constantly slowing down to make the reception. Forces passes downfield on occasion and must improve his long accuracy. Does not always see the field outside of the pocket. Benefits from taking most of his snaps out of the shotgun. Fizzled at the end of his senior campaign and was benched.

ANALYSIS:
A signal caller who will draw much debate and opinion, Orton has abilities to play in a short passing game. His timing and ability to throw the intermediate pass with accuracy are his best assets, yet he may be a quarterback who struggles in the vertical game. Will need time to learn a pro-passing offense rather than the spread formation he's accustomed to. A solid prospect who should be chosen during late in the draft's first day.

Good post, very detailed . . . thanks.

I agree, I don't wanna give up any high picks for mediocre QB's with insane contracts . . . and the free ones have head cases or are just plain not good enough.

I'll dip into the 2012 QB class if Henne isn't the answer this season. No need to panic if your Miami, but maybe they will.

I would take Palmer over any of these other QB's by a mile.

Who is better than Henne on that list??? Kolb and Flynn are still raw and have big question marks. Bulger is coming to AZ and as washed up anyway. Hasselback is very brittle and primarily a west coast guy. Young is a ticking time bomb and a team cancer. That leaves Palmer and his huge contract. Yes he is better but not only would cost a lot of cap room but a high draft choice as well. Face it folks, we are not signing a veteran QB and are riding with Henne. However, don't worry, it really is a win/win. If he has the light come on and leads us to the playoffs, well that's what we wanted. If he still sucks, we're right in the Luck/Barkley sweepstakes. That's the way we're going to have to look at it as there is absolutely no help out there right now.

If we had Palmer this would be a playoff team immediately. I wonder what it would take to get him..

Palmer might have some Rich Gannon Lazarus type upside but the costs associated with acquiring and paying him don't really justify bringing him in as a stopgap. Aside from that he's calling his own plays on this one and they involve getting closer to home like 45mins by air in Glendale AZ or 2hrs away playing for his old USC Coach in the rainy Pacific NW.

Kolb is AJ Feeley Redux, down to his spotty good and bad performance over a limited sampling. Factor in that he was taken only a few picks above Beck and comes from a pass happy spread U of Houston offense, and while we might invest a 4th on him, given the question marks anything above that is folly.

Flynn looked good again in a very limited, pressure-free setting and as Jamarcus Russell's LSU successor, I find that worrisome. We'd be buying a pig in a poke for this late rounder which is okay if he costs us nothing more than another late rounder.

Bulger is so reminiscent of when we brought in Trent Green - there are so many parallels that it's downright eerie. Pass

Hasselbeck - well if can stay healthy, maybe he would have been good as a short term stopgap and mentor for Ryan Mallett, but since, in their infinite wisdom, our all knowng FO decided to take a center who can't snap and the 4th best RB in a plentiful draft instead of perhaps the next Emmit Smith and Mallett, then no.. Hasselbeck is of no use to us thanks. Aside from that, his brother's a moron so he loses points there too.

Vince Young and his Wonderlic 6. There are folks on this board who claim Henne has nothing between his ears yet want Young. I find this confounding. This could be dumbest guy by word and deed in the NFL although Cromartie might give him a run for his money. From his sensitivity, overreaction and disrespect to fans as a result of being booed, to drunken brawls in nightclubs, to disrespecting coaches and letting his team down to being injury prone to having the Titan playbook dumbed down for him, I sure wouldn't put this specimen anywhere in Amish Country, let alone near SoBe.!!!!

I'd like to bring in Bulger and give him a shot. I don't think the situation would entirely be like Trent Green as Green was brought in with the intention of starting with a decrepit QB depth chart. Bulger would be brought in to compete with Henne (and Thigpen?) to earn the starting job. I say its worth a shot and since Bulger is a FA, no loss of draft picks either.

I completely agree. I don't want to give up ANY draft picks for any of these QB's. I would rather start Henne than give away picks for these guys. I would consider Young if he were released, Orton for nothing more than a 5th. The rest...No thanks!!!

After watching the video of Matt Flynn, I noticed how much difficulty the Packers front 5 had with NE. Pressure all day.

Several commentators have also mentioned Brian Hoyer, Brady's backup in New England. I don't know much about him but he's likely to be a lot cheaper than the others listed above and it could be good to have Henne compete for the job rather than just hand it to Palmer, Kolb, VY, et al.

I came away somewhat impressed with Matt Flynn, but he needs a lot of work.

The only guys worth talking about here are Flynn and Kolb. The rest are either too old, too expensive, crazy, or just not much of an upgrade from Henne. Flynn looked good in the games he played in this year and Andy Reid put his faith in Kolb by drafting him and naming him the starter last year (that should say something).

One other QB that should be thrown in this mix is Orton. We could get him cheap, he is still young, and he played very well last season. He would likely fit our offense too.

Man when you read this thread we seem so desperate. Just forget the free agent QB. If Henne doesn't get better in 2012, he's gone ,THEN we give the ranch to get best QB or free agent. This crop of castoffs is Grounds Hog Day for Us. Remember Culpepper? Remember Green? Stop !!

Lets just ride out what we have in Henne. If he works out, proving the issue with the playcalling, and gives us hope for the future, great. If he doesnt work out, next season will probably be a disaster, and we'll have a top 10 pick and a chance at a replacement.
