Dolphins sign Probowl Kick Return Clifton Smith

Ireland to the rescue. Bess was looking like he was stuck in quicksand out there. Very happy with the signing.

Good signing. He definately addresses a need, and is a surefire upgrade over Ginnger. Then again, you put anybody from this forum on returns and it would still be a drastic upgrade over Ginnger. Ginn sucks.

I'm going to be paying attention to the practice reports in the weeks to come because if I see that they are practicing N.Carroll along w/ KR Clifton Smith than I think Cobbs could be the odd man out. I have a feeling in the coming weeks our 2 KR's will be Nolan Carroll with primary returner Clifton Smith and Cobbs could be cut.

soa side from kick returns and punts...where do you guys think smith will play on offense if he does?, is he faster than all our backs? His returns looked slow to me.

Smith has a career KO return average of 28.3. If he can do that for us, he just shortened our field by 5.1 yards every time Henne heads out on the field, compared to what we had last year--including Teddy's 2 TDs.

That's a huge difference over the course of a season.

cobbs will never be cut...unless injury

he's ended on IR the last 2 out of 3 years and we've seen this FO seems to be getting rid of the injury plagued guys. In addition if Clifton Smith can take over Cobbs roll on KR and someone else can take over other special teams duties than I think him being let go is very possible. In addition they may want to see more of Lex Hilliard this year.

How and why was he available? If he is a pro bowl kick returner, why didn't they keep him?

Two concussions last year, the 2nd of which put him on IR in December. He also had a strange problem with his knee that was likened to "gout-like symptoms." Never heard what it was specifically. Other than those health issues and a fumbling problem, he's a pro bowl return man acquired without having to give up a player or a pick.

Low risk high reward.

It not IF because he was a pro bowler. The Bucs went with 2 guys on KR and PR that can do more roles on offense than he can do. He's more of just a return specialist but Sparano has been saying they would find a roster spot for a PR/KR specialist even if they can't do other roles.

Cobbs is no more likely to go on IR than Clifton Smith, he of the 2 concussions and gout.

I think you are getting Cobbs confused with Brown. Last season was the only time Cobbs has been on IR.
