J-Off's Board V1

Who here has a problem with Misi when healthy? The only problem is he is never healthy. His play is pretty solid

True. Misi is solid and pretty assignment reliable. That may be exactly what Miami is looking for, but it sure would be nice to get a playmaker there.

It seems through the years that this is one position that the Dolphins do not prioritize. It could be that the team has ran a 4-3 for so many years that DE is certainly more important in that scheme.

After watching Wormley again, I bumped him into the 1st. This dude fluctuates between 295-300lbs. The hustle is there, and he moves like he's 265 - like a good 265. He could use his hands better, but he has the tools of an All Pro 5-tech.

I don't hate it. McDowell is a 1st-RD talent. He didn't test great, but he was in a similar range, at a similar age, to Leonard Williams.

There just seems to be a lot of smoke around the idea that he's a hot/cold worker and a team cancer. His poor production, relative to his talent, doesn't ease any of those concerns. He's in my "let someone else deal with it" category.

I think you can have different approaches that mitigate risk in different ways. Just because he's low on my board, it doesn't mean that I think someone is wrong for wanting to gamble on his talent.

Here's an interesting article on McDowell's college recruitment.

I like your aggressive ranking of Watt. I think he can be a Clay Mathews level player.

My view - you can't whiff. Watt will be good. If you hit on most of your top 3 picks over the years, you will be a good team. You take a chance on too many guys, and suddenly you're whiffing too often and your team is so bad it's like trying to turn around the Titanic after it hits an iceberg.

I agree. IMO, too many media rankings, and often too many NFL rankings, do a poor job of weeding out risky players. Watt is seen as a risk, but D. Fowler was not? Umm . . . on what planet? For my top guys, I'm looking for high-end tools that translate directly to success at a given position. I want almost zero doubt that the player will be one of the top 10-15 players at his position, and I want All Pro upside. It's one of the reasons I favor pass rushers early, particularly in strong drafts. The position is relatively easy to decipher, and it's the premium position after QB. If you have a pass rusher - let's say Jordan Willis - who was productive in college, has high character/maturity/awareness, and he tests like a freak, that's a slam-dunk pick. That's as close as can't-miss as you can get - outside of the uber freaks like Myles Garrett. Watt doesn't have the overall production, but he has the intangibles, pedigree, and physical tools. He's a much better prospect than Matthews was, because he's bigger and more athletic (agility and jumps). But, I agree that he plays with a similar intensity. Here's how Bowser and Watt stack up to Matthews as an athlete:

I think he's the best DL coming from Michigan and I don't think its a bold prediction to say he'll be the best player coming out of Ann Arbor this draft.

That was a messy recruitment and his father turned out to be correct. MSU is mired in a serious sexual assault and Title IX investigation involving 3 players and a coach. Aside from that, McDowell was bad in the locker room and it grew worse in 2016. Lot of thoughts that he is a main player in why the Spartans fell apart this past year.

Agree on both points. It's him, Peppers, Braden, or one of the WR's (who both have big talent but serious concerns). I'd bet on Peppers or Wormley - have them very close.

Chesson had a solid 2015 season with Jake Ruddock at QB. I thought Darboh had a better 2016 season with Speight at QB than Chesson in 2015. Darboh has great hands, is focused runs good routes. He's a guy you could count on to come up with a big catch when needed. Wouldn't be disappointed if Miami went with Braden later in the draft.

Reminds me a lot of Jared Odrick. Maybe it's partly the size.

I really want Watt, but I just don't see Miami prioritizing that linebacker spot. Unless the team views him as someone who can play DE in passing downs and I'm not sure there. Watt does potentially have the ability to play MLB as well. Guess that's why teams are working him out all over the place.

I think the team goes DE in the first, OL in the second (maybe safety depending on whose left) and then looks middle rounds for linebackers.

I have two questions:

1. Detroit picks in front of us and they need front seven help. Scheme-wise, will they be focused on the same players as Miami or will they prefer players with slightly different abilities for their scheme?

2. We don't have enough picks this year, seemingly, to draft strong players at all of our need/want positions. Strategically, which positions should we prioritize this year based on position depth in this draft, but also with an eye on whom will be available in 2018? Which positions will be lean/deep in 2018?

I definitely think you want Watt with his hand in the dirt or rushing off the edge from a 2-point stance on passing situations, but I agree that he likely won't be a Dolphin. Don't think he's there at 22, and even if he is, I'm not sure the staff would like the fit (unfortunate, imo).

DE then OL or S makes a lot of sense. Talent will probably dictate CB or S, but if you need a starting OG, you may have to grab him at 54.
