If a team signs him to a decent deal and we don't have free agents signings that match or exceed the contract he potentially would get.

Doubtful that 1. He signs a deal that big and 2. We would stand pat in FA.

No one really knows what the formula is, I'm just not sure whether not signing an option on a rookie contract makes the loss of the player to FA ineligible for consideration of a compensatory pick.

I wonder if it is the horrible field condtions that somehow caused the James and Steen foot injuries that took them both out for the rest of the season. I don't know how either got hurt but both were foot injuries.

The Dolphins took the 5th year option. As far as I know that guarantees his salary if injured and can't play next year.
