Miami Dolphins $13.6 million under cap

I think it's just going to be hard for us to get any big names this offseason. We're not that far under the cap, plus with the minimum salary floor back into effect, there are going to be a lot of teams that are far below the cap that need to spend money just to get within that.

Actually, I think the number speculated by Clayton already included a deduction for the rookie pool to pay our draft picks. If it didn't, it doesn't make sense.

So again, If Soliai gets a long term contract, and Berger is traded, and Crowder,Mcquistan,Sapp,Culver, and perhaos one other veteran is traded or cut, the Dolphins will be looking at 25 to 30 mil with the exemption.

That is plenty of money to extend Langford and Wake, and to sign D.Williams,Manny Lawson , Mathias Kiwanuka, and 6-10 rookie free agents like Marc Schiechl,Blaine Sumner,Derrick Locke,Nic Grigsby,Mike Huey, Mario Harvey.

Armando Salguero broke it down in his blog last week, too. The Fins have $109.5M in committed salary. The cap is $120M with a $3M exception added in for this year. So, there you have it, $13.6M under the cap. And that does not include the draft picks or our own free agents. The draft picks are going to amount to about $6M in signings, and resigning Hilliard, Sheets, Garner, and one of McQuistan/Murtha is going to add a little over $2M. That's going to leave roughly $6M for free agency.

Rookie salaries were cut in half with this new CBA. The rookies will account for $3 million max. Also, the Dolphins will give Soliai a long term contract that will cut his current franchise tag/cap number from $12 million to around 5 million. The Fins will have around $20 million to play with. I expect us to sign a QB (or trade for one), sign a top RB, and sign a pass rusher with that money.

if you have a ten year deal you could sign as many guys as you want and spread it out with a big signing bonus up front and low salary

Rookie salaries are expected to drop 20-30%, not half. And the cuts are mostly in the top 10 picks of the draft. Guys picked from #11 on are affected very little. Pouncey will still get about $3M per season, and Thomas will still get around $1M. The lower picks will all be in the $400k range, so will amount to roughly $2M. Soliai's cap number isn't going to be anywhere near $5M. At best, they may be able to cut it to $10M. He's guaranteed $12.5M this season. Why is he going to take a long term deal that averages $5M per season? When it was rumored that multiple teams were prepared to offer him $8M per season if Miami let him hit unrestricted free agency? His agent is now looking for a long term deal worth $10M per season, with at least $20M in guaranteed money. He's not going to go from a 1 year deal worth $12.5M to a 4 year deal worth $20M. It would make no sense on his part. If he plays like he did last year, he's setting himself up for a 4 year, $40M deal.

If Lydon Murtha starts over Vernon Carey then we will all be flaming alcoholics by week five and on suicide watch to boot.

You seem to be very misinformed on how salary cap #'s work in the NFL. Soliai can sign a 4 year $40 million contract and his salary cap number could only be around $5 million for the first year. Those type of contracts usually gets you a $12 million signing bonus which can be prorated for the duration of the contract. That equals $3 mill per year. Then you can structure the remaining 24 million anyway you like over the 4 years. He can get $2 million in year one, $4 million in year two, $8 million in year three, and $10 million in year 4 (the last two years of his salary would probably not be guaranteed). So his cap # for year one would be $3 million (his prorated bonus) plus $2 million dollars (his year one salary). That equals a year one salary cap # of $5 million and a salary cap # of $7 million in year two. Keep in mind that is assuming he gets a 4 year $40 million deal which would be a franchise pro bowl type deal as you suggest. Point is, the Fins can structure the deal in a way that would keep his salary cap # very reasonable for the first two years.
