Miami Dolphins need to rethink roster, philosophy, coaching staff

Yep, there is talent on this team and young talent (granted it needs more). The big problem is there isn't an NFL caliber coaching staff to get them to their potential. The biggest indictment of the coaching staff is Miami is second to last in the NFL with 90 penalties and second to last with 34 pre-snap penalties. They are 30 in total plays. Seattle has the most penalties and pre-snap, but they also are second in total plays and almost 200 more than Miami. Poor attention to detail and a HC that is trying to be a HC and an OC and is failing at both. IF Gase is going to be successful he needs to surround himself with quality coaches and while he can have input on the offensive game plan and play calling he needs someone in there to do the bulk of it and take the responsibilities. If not he will be here one more season and then he will be gone.

That's a great statistic which really shows that we actually are the most penalized team by percentage.
Don't forget, play calling is the ONLY thing Gase said he likes about coaching. He's not going to give that up without a huge fight. And who's going to tell him he can't call plays anymore? Ross?

Agreed. My problem is the QB/interior OL/TE are SOOOOO bad, it's hard to tell how much of everything else is as bad as it looks or just bad because of the VERY bad. For example, I watch other kick returns and see a returner with a lot of open space in front of him. Watch Miami and you'll see what looks like a defender every 2 feet. I'm not a fan of Grant, but the NFL's best returners would be pedestrian in Miami. It looks like most of the D is uninspired. Is this coaching, or have they just decided not to risk their bodies for this O? Yes, there is talent. A rebuild? Not needed. But those BAD players are killing the whole team.

If I had a dime for every time I heard the phrase "'________' could not be worse" and it is...I'd be able to buy the Dolphins myself. Pretty sure the same was said about Huizenga. Pretty sure I heard the phrase uttered last year concerning Vance Joseph. I think I heard it concerning Brandon Albert last year too. I heard that phrase so many times in the Navy it was ridiculous to the point where a new phrase was used. "Every time you think it can't get any worse....it does."

How many times must this team and organization demoralize its fans before rock bottom?
As one of those crotchety old guys (fan since 1970) I had my fill years ago.
Other than 2 seasons of false hope, this team has sucked since 2003.
Yea...the younger fans have not lived through the losing. With this owner, it will not be long until they have their fill..

Again this is why Tannehill's presence would've been futile, at least in terms of producing a season at least as good as last year's.

Based on this season and what's reasonable in terms of improvement for this team from this season to the next (including Tannehill's return), I'd predict a record between 6-10 and 8-8 next year.

My own personal feeling is that they should trade any player over the age of 28 who has trade value, including RT and Suh for reasonable compensation, IF possible. Dump/trade any players that aren’t playing up to their contracts.
Stock up on as many draft picks between 2nd-5th rounds with these trades.
Target one of the top QBs and attempt to draft him, even if it means trading up.
I have to think that Gase and the FO have someone in mind.
Start with a new QB and a young, hungry team. They have several young building blocks already.
Half fixes rarely work.

I agree with all of that, only I would substitute the drafting of a QB with the signing of Kirk Cousins.

With Cousins you have a sure thing -- a QB who has performed at a very high level over an extended period. With a draft pick you have a relative uncertainty at too important a position.

If Cousins wasn't available I'd agree with you completely.

I'd love it if that happened, but . . . there's no way in hell that it's happening.

Not to mention you're not going to be getting a "reasonable" return on a good, but not great, QB whose coming off two major knee injuries and hasn't played since early December of 2016. And I don't think any team is chomping at the bit to take on that Suh contract either.

Teams with 8+ wins: 5-13

Cousins is a nice player, but no where near as great as he thinks, and struggles in big games against good teams.
