Ndamukong Suh

Ya, looking back this was not a good signing. However at the time, the season before picking him up we just missed the playoffs and had at least 3 late game collapses by the D (I remember Rodgers and Manning got us, and one other) when Tannehill had led us to late game leads. Those late game collapses by the D kept us out of the playoffs....so I am sure the thinking was Suh could make the few plays that keep that from happening.

The only way I would have been happy with the signing was if he played like Albert Haynesworth version 2008. If he played like that for 3 solid season than its worth it. He hasn't even played like or is consider the best defensive player in the game. But thats not fair to him it was always going to be next to impossible to live up to that contract.

Suh is great at what he does, but building our defense around that was a mistake. Our whole defense is predicated on upfield penetration and disruption, and it's designed to play with a lead. What we've seen too often now is a defense that fails to consistently control gaps, so we get run on. We see a defense that gets taken advantage of by misdirection and counters. We see a defense that too often leaves the linebackers vulnerable in man coverage or too often leaves huge gaps in the zones. And probably the most frustrating given the stated philosophy of our defense, the pass rush disappears way too often.

The Dolphins are locked into a defensive style that hasn't produced results, and on the rare chance that it does, it's not lasting. It's not Suh's fault, but the coaches seem unwilling to change the defensive philosophy at the risk of alienating Suh. Remember when JJ wanted to change the offense but was worried about the potential friction with Marino? That didn't turn out well either.

I'll never understand why some want to get rid of the only elite player we have, who has missed two games in his career. Is he expensive? Sure, there's always going to be hefty price on top shelf talent. I would much rather be cash strapped than have a bunch of extra money to spend on more over priced, middle of the road guys. Eventually we are going to have to learn how to draft properly and quit relying on making salary cap our go to team builder.

Just think of all the mediocre scrubs we could get with that cash!

The problem is that we didn't build a defense around that. Complete failure up to this point, both in regards to personnel and scheme. The opposing gameplan for Suh is easy, focus on taking him out of the play and count on your skill players being better than the UDFAs and Kiko. Super challenging.

This, 1000x over. Suh has not been the problem. In the defense the Fins run, the object of the DT is to get penetration and occupy a blocker. Suh does that with MULTIPLE blockers.

Anything the Dolphins do this off season that isn't forward looking to the 2019 season is a mistake. If they handle things with extreme discipline this off season they can effect a nice salary cap roll over resulting in having around 100 mil in cap space in March 2019.

If they avoid free agency and take the comp picks for Landry,Hayes,Thomas, and the others, they can enter the 2019 draft with at least 9 picks and perhaps more if they do some trading .

Mortgaging the future with restructures and more bad free agent contracts isn't the answer for a team that sits around 8 mil in cap space right now. That isn't much more than the rookie pool.

Just face the reality, Dolphins need to stand pat and take the roll over and comp picks and build through the draft in 18. Then, go hog wild in 2019.
This is a great approach if you are discipline in your thinking and actions which I don't know that the Dolphins are, but Gase is a good coach and seems to be patient, let's keep our fingers cross.

We bemoan the talent level of our team and the misses in FA and the draft, yet there are some that want to get rid of a truly generational talent in his prime...who plays an ungodly % of snaps for a DT, does not take plays off, consistently produces even though he is regularly double teamed, is tailor fit for the D we run and is a solid lock room presence. Outstanding takes...
