Reshad Jones restructures contract

Just more kicking the can down the road.

Sure it helps this incompetent front office out today and Reshad gets a nice healthy upfront payment for his troubles . . . But when he is 32 and potentially out of his prime, yet we are faced with a 15 million dollar cap hit and a 5 million dollar dead cap hit to cut bait . . . You get the same outrage you get with Suh.

**** has got to get better on the contract front from these guys.

That's a pretty appropriate gif considering who's leading this shopping spree...

Nice, glad to see someone willing to help us out financially.... unlike someone...James, looking at you

Team player. Good deal. Didn't expect this. Outside of Wake, Jones is my favorite defensive player.

This is just a flat out awesome move by a veteran who simply didn't have to comply. Clearly doing what he can to help the team and shows that he wants to be here regardless of.... Well, everything. Kudos, Reshad. Hopefully they use that money to bring in some OL help.

We will be better off cap wise next year. Not sure what playoffs have to do with a restructure.

Playoffs have everything to do with it. Great, were freeing up cap so we can get another JAG who in the end won't bring this team any closer to success. But to do that were sacrificing future cap at a time where we might actually be in a better position.

All this team player stuff . . . Reshad has proven before that he will hold out once his guaranteed money is up . . . Even with TWO years left on a deal.

This is about him getting cash today, as it should be . . . The team benefiting in the process is a distant second. He knows he is expendable in 2 or 3 years, may as well get the money now, increase the dead cap hit down the road and give the team a tough decision on whether to take on dead cap or keep him around later in the contract.

All for this but a bit confused why everyone is clapping it up for Jones.

Wouldn't it be to his advantage to take more money up front? Basically a win win no?

I'm going to ask a question that I really don't know the answer to. Why would a player not agree to a restructure of his contract? It seems like he's making the same salary it's just a matter of moving the numbers around so where is the negative to doing so?

Not really a negative for the player at all. It's more of a negative for the team because they are just kicking the can down the road. Especially for a 30+ year old player.

So, if cap space can be created with relative ease by simply restructuring contracts, then what can there possibly not be to like about re-doing deals this way?

Well, it's not that simple.

For starters, cap hits aren't really being alleviated so much as delayed. Every cent of that deal is still going to count against the cap at some point. By restructuring, all teams are essentially doing is putting off today's problems until tomorrow.

Also, any salary that is converted into bonuses becomes guaranteed money. That's one of the reasons why players are generally amenable to doing it. Tom Brady didn't drop his "take home pay" over the next two seasons from $30 million to about $17 million because he's a swell guy.

He did it, as Albert Breer of the NFL Network reported, because now his "new" five year, $60 million contract is fully guaranteed against injury.

Completely forgot about the hold out for some reason.

Well you painted yourself in a corner with other decisions so something was coming. This is however how you get in cap trouble and its multiples.

It's true but I also see Jones wanting to help the team get into the playoffs. Not that this will get us any further to that goal because we are terrible at free agency. In the end, this restructure will be another mess the next GM has to clean up.
