Reshad Jones restructures contract

Is it me, or does Tannenbaum restructure every significant contract that he has ever written? Aponte never had this problem. Just means this clown never gets it right and has to kick the can down the road in an attempt to save face.

Problems with guaranteeing more of a contract...

Making larger cap numbers in future years which puts you in a bad position, especially when considered along with the fact that you must already be cash-strapped.

Player effort is more likely to decline. If the guy's already been paid 80% of his money, don't you think he might slack off?

A year or two later the player demands even more money or his release. He already has his money so he decides he wants out; makes up some lame story to cover his ass so another team will sign him providing yet more guaranteed money.

Another big problem with restructures is you do them so that you can free up money to sign players now. Players in the plural. Every one of which has a contract with a lower cap hit in year one and higher cap hits in future years. So not only do you borrow cap room from future years, but you lean on future year's cap more heavily to pay for new player contracts. That's not even accounting for the fact some of those players will wound up cut but still counting against the cap (dead money). Plus the fact that a higher cap means bigger contracts in free agency as teams all over the league have more money to compete for players. It's no wonder even a 10 million annual cap increase isn't enough to cover all that.

It's just bad cap management... but it helps the execs on top survive for another year. That's the only upside. The fans are happy, the owner is happy, the execs get another year, and the team continues to struggle.
